Davy Jones of the Monkees has died of an apparent heart attack at age 66. The singer, who had been on a solo tour this month, complained of chest pains last evening and was admitted to a hospital this morning in Stuart, Florida.

Jones was born in Manchester, England and started acting as a child. In 1964 he had the misfortune of appearing in the cast of Oliver! on the same episode of The Ed Sullivan Show where the Beatles made their debut. The next year he was cast in The Monkees, a comedy show/band inspired by the success of the Beatles. They were an instant hit in the ratings and the record shops, scoring massive singles with “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer,” “Stepping Stone” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Jones – who played tambourine in the band – was the lead vocalist on the classics “Daydream Believer” and “I Wanna Be Free.” At the peak of their popularity in 1967 the group sold more albums than the Beatles.

The Monkees were about 40 years ahead of their time.  A corporate creation to cash in on the Beatles fad.  Get four good looking guys, have them dance around, record music videos, and sell the shit out the merchandise, concerts, t-shirts, posters, lunch boxes, and music.  The members of the group were fairly conflicted.  On one hand, they were one of the most famous music acts of the day.  On the other, they were puppets, doing what the guys on the top floor demanded.  The first big "sell out group" and the battle between artistic freedom and commercialism has been raging ever since.  Just ask Britney Spears what she thinks.

WOO Dat! Nicely said sir!

I did see The Monkees at a dinner theater when they did a reunion tour.

Mike Nesmith passed on it.

Was a good time.

But, I am hard pressed, other than a tamborine and gourds, what did Davy play?

And with his death on 2.29, will he only be remembered every four years?
(And in century years divisible by four?)

Ah, I did not see this thread and I posted a similar one in "General Discussion".

Davy was actually not the lead singer of the Monkees.  Micky Dolenz usually sang lead vocals.  Davy only sang lead on one of the Monkees' hits: Daydream Believer.

The Monkees records (vinyl to all you young members) out sold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in 1967.  Also in that year, because of Davey Jones immense popularity, another up and coming  Englishman named Davey Jones had to change his name.  He changed it to David Bowie.

My cousin told me about Davy's death yesterday evening. Very tragedic... He was the youngest of the four, too.

Can it really be eight years since Davy passed away? It feels like yesterday. Such a nice, gentle guy.

He died on Leap Day, so technically it’s only the second anniversary of his death.

I met Davy in the early '80s. He had gone back to training horses but was still exploring the possibility of a career as a solo musician.

And today there was a news article about Micky Dolenz suing the FBI for covert surveillance of the Monkees, back in the '60s. The article noted that Micky was the last surviving member of the band. That I didn't know.

My favorite Monkee, Michael Nesmith, was raised in Dallas Texas by his mother, Bette Nesmith Graham. Graham invented the first typing correction fluid she named Liquid Paper in 1956, selling the company to Gillette in 1979 for $47.5 million plus royalties. Monkee Nesmith died last year of a heart ailment at age 78

He was in an episode of Spongebob. Spongebob is sent by the Flying Dutchman to the bottom of the ocean, which, in pirate talk, is Davyd Jones Locker.

It's a sight gag: Spongebob turns around, there's the real Davy Jones standing in front of a gym locker. He sings a few bars of "Daydream Believer."

[image of Davey Jones on the Brady Bunch in 1971, with 15-year-old Maureen McCormick removed]

My answer was, "Not me." I recall watching a few Monkees episodes when they were first broadcast and assumed the stills were from one that I missed.

An image search identified the episode as S03E12 "Getting Davy Jones" from The Brady Bunch. I wasn't familiar with the show but found the episode on Usenet. Marcy hears that Davy is in town and wants to invite him to sing at the junior prom. She goes to his hotel and finds hundreds of fans waiting outside.

A decade after this episode was aired, I also went to the hotel in which Davy was staying and likewise found a crowd of fans waiting patiently outside.

So long ago . . .
