No thread for this? Or did I miss it somewhere?

Oscars this year are a bit of a mystery to me. I haven't really seen any of the movies that were nominated.

I think it's funny that The Town won the award for best video editing. Yeah...I can see giving them an award for not making us suffer through any more of that movie than we absolutely had to. Haha...and I can't fucking believe that they tried to give Jeremy Renner an oscar again. That guy sucks. Maybe some of you might remember my rant about him and The Hurt Locker a while back.

I'm eager to see Black Swan. I've been an Aronofsky fanboy since Requiem for a Dream.

I didn't see any of the movies either but have to agree about The Hurt Locker. I thought it was sappy and Sandra Bullock didn't deserve the Oscar for it even tho I like her a lot.  Oh wait wrong movie....  :emot_shades:    Meryl Streep was excellent last year in Julie & Julia and should have won. Oh and I did watch most of the Oscar show this year even tho it sucked.

The Town was awesome
I'm frankly surprised it didn't receive directing/writing nominations for Ben Affleck (which he is much better suited to than acting)
and nothing against Jeremy Renner, but I was hoping that Pete Postlethwaite would've been nominated instead

Best Picture was a four-way race between Black Swan, Inception (my personal favorite), The King's Speech, and The Social Network, so there were no real surprises here

Best Actor and Best Actress were both a guaranteed lock

while I was pulling for Geoffrey Rush for Best Supporting Actor, I'm not surprised that Christian Bale won (and frankly it's about time)

again, Best Supporting Actress was a three-way race between Helena Bonham Carter, Melissa Leo, and Hailee Steinfeld (though I'm still puzzled as to why she wasn't in the Leading category) so still no shockers

Best Director, on the other hand, belonged to either Darren Aronofsky or David Fincher, so that was a disappointment

Best Adapted Screenplay was (again) a guaranteed lock for The Social Network

Best Original Screenplay should've gone to Inception, so I suppose that was the only real upset of the night

now that they've increased the field to ten movies in the Best Picture race, in order to give Pixar animated films a better chance, an animated film shouldn't be allowed in both categories
it kinda takes away some of the tension

I'm disappointed that 1) The Town wasn't nominated for Best Picture, 2) Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't nominated for Best Actor (for either Inception or Shutter Island), and 3) Christopher Nolan wasn't nominated for Best Director

I also have some other notable snubs on my mind

2010

Best Picture
The Hurt Locker wins over Avatar and Inglourious Basterds??

Best Actor
Sharlto Copely (District 9) wasn't even nominated!

Best Actress
Sandra Bullock wins over Gabourey Sidibe??

Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow wins over James Cameron and Quentin Tarantino??

Best Visual Effects
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen wasn't even nominated!

Best Make-Up
Star Trek wins over District 9??

Best Costume
Where The Wild Things Are wasn't even nominated!

Pete Postlethwaite (the florist) was the only good thing about The Town, and they completely squandered that resource. I think he was on screen for less than three minutes.

District 9 got completely shafted. I think it was because most people were too dim to understand anything about what was going on in the movie. Seriously. I've had some surprising conversations about that movie, and people had no clue; they thought the movie sucked because it didn't give us every answer to every question.

I`ve never watched the Oscars and am not going to start now, but about the movies:

The Town:
not bad, but not great. Ben Affleck is just too much of a `pretty boy` to make his character realistic even though they tried to cover that up with a stubbly beard. The other actors were far better.

The Hurt Locker:
you MUST be kidding me? Okay, there is some good suspense and the sound and the enervating depiction of the bomb defusing scenes were splendid, but there were just way too many unrealistic events in the movie, showing the clear way how Hollywood chops up a story completely wrong. It is a missed opportunity and a disgrace to all the men serving in bomb squads. How hard could it be for Bigelow to have her story checked by a real E.O.D. crew?

Inglourious Basterds:
Okay, I `m probably biased here as I LOVE Tarantino, but I can`t call this anything else than another MASTERPIECE from him! It is always such a relief to see actors actually SPEAKING the native language of their character instead of English with a ridiculous German or French accent. I  absolutely adored Christoph Waltz as Col Hans Landa — aka The Jew Hunter. Landa is charming, charismatic, ridiculously intelligent and downright terrifying. And speaking as someone who understands French and German, I can tell you his accents were outstanding. Same goes for Pitt. I nearly choked laughing when he pronounced 'Bongiorno' with a thick Tennessee accent.

Being a continental European I immediately knew the British undercover agent gave himself away when he made the `English 3` with his hand and couldn`t help but wonder if any of my American friends also figured that out right there?

I was really expecting Tarrantino to get the oscar that year. That probably added to my hatred of The Hurt Locker =)

I saw Black Swan last night. I liked it a lot. Natalie Portman really was amazing in it. Reminded me a little bit of a classic anime movie, Perfect Blue.
