I thought that Gundam was going to get a semi live action/ cgi remake.

Fuck this show.

I watched the entire Mobile Suit Gundam series growing up. Not a fan of the bullshit childish adaptations, because the original story wasn't meant for kids.

How do you make a kids show out of war crimes, terrorism and the wholesale murder of innocent civilians?

So when this show was announced I really wanted to give it a shot as an interesting take on the story, an "Other side" take.

But I cant stomach this.

Zeon were the bad guys, coming from space colonies to take over the whole shebang. Their leader wanted not peace, but the eradication of everyone born on Earth, calling us parasites. Even went as far as to launch an entire massive asteroid at the planet.

But now this show wants to make them out to be some honorable freedom fighting force, sent to liberate them from the evil earth federation?

Give me a fucking break. The entire series did blur the lines at points on who was really the bad guys, but the balance of atrocities puts the Zeon on the heavier end. Wiping out an entire colony just because they did not want to join their battle.

But one fact remained true. The mobile suits were almost always piloted by good guys. and the Zaku were the bad guys. So when this show painted the Mobile suit (0087, I believe, since it did not bear the full white, blue and red coloration, or had any vents to speak of. Vents were basically a mind controlled mini weapon system the pilot, if good enough could use on top of their other weapons, after the first season I believe, iirc, the unit got upgraded with vents.) was a horrible bad guy who just cuts down the zaku suits like nothing.

Yeah, as opposed to just blowing them up like in the cartoon.

You come to earth after declaring independence from it, bitch and whine for episodes on how earth steals everything from you, and then have the gall to act oppressed when earth fights back with something that actually poses a threat to your army. Right. Why don't you ask the civilians who you crushed, and scattered to the winds who the bad guys are.

Even the first few minutes were basically a visual cue that the Zeon gave little fucks about the populace as the were trying to take an earth base in Romania. So down trodden good guys, or douche bag level invaders getting what they deserved. I will leave that judgement to anyone who watches it.

But me personally, it really irks me when I got excited for it, only for it to turn it into a bleeding heart show about the poor space colonies having to rise up to take back what was stolen. Please spare me, and just give us fans what we really want, giant robot battles, without trying to play the bad is good card off the bat, and if not at least tell us fans where in the timeline does this fit, before the attempted mass genocide of the earth human race, or after, when Zeon was forced into a shaky truce? I am left confused, as most of the red wolves squad were cut down in the original series because they went insane on a power trip, since earth did not have giant robots built in space to defend it, that was the point of the Mobile Suit project to defend earth.

But hey, at least it looks nice.

Miss if you want, no skin off my teeth.

I know next to nothing about anime and manga — only the names of some of the most famous ones. But I feel your pain and anger at seeing something you love turned into a pointless mess.

You have my sympathy.  :-*

Not much to know, except unlike western comics and cartoons, its further divided by genres for the sexes and ages. Most of the shonen genre is less straight forward compared to comics like Superman or the Justice league, which leaves the story open to hit you with twists and turns that sometimes cannot be predicted.

I detailed the groupings in another post.

Gundam was a Shonen manga, for the older boys.

But it was a good anime. There was fighting, love, revenge, and heroics.

But this remake/side story(?) was purely made to shit on its source material by playing the "Sympathy for the Devil" card. Now don't get me wrong, telling the story from the bad guy's side is a great narrative for a story, but it was like trying to tell a fish story in a desert, while not having seen any bodies of water before. The Zeon were the bad guys for a large chunk of the story, and having watched what they were capable of, trying to soften them to tell a story doesn't work.

With no disrespect, it would be like telling the story of the Japanese occupation of Korea from the Japanese side, and making them out to be brave hero's while they oppress the populace. Just doesn't work when you already know the bad stuff that went down.

Like:

There was one scene where the unit was relaxing after repelling the defenders and taking their base where they were sharing moments of self awareness as they were bitching about being on earth, how its cold, the air sucks, the rations suck, but at least a soldier had a flask of booze from Kentucky. One soldier chimes in about only being there for the pay.

Now I may be wrong. The series might be worth the watch after the cringe, but when you do that to a story, I cannot in good faith recommend it for watching.
