I am sorry for being absent, the past two weeks have been the most stressful.

My Dad.

He is having some serious health issues. Something in him is causing him to deplete potassium in his body rapidly.

He goes out to Home Depot to get a spark plug for his weedeater. Fine. Though me and my siblings have been taking time to cut his grass for him. So he gets there, gets hot and tired, sits down and wakes up in the hospital for a few days.

He gets out feeling better, takes my niece to school, as my sister was at work, comes back, goes to the bathroom, and is found slumped over on the toilet, leaning against the wall passed out. Now he is in the hospital, they ran many tests and still cant find whats wrong with him. So they called me to ask which rehab facility we want him to go to. I remembered the one my mom complained about, so I said not that one. But this is killing me. Its the same pattern that my mom went through, but for different reasons. She would fall sick, go in, come back rinse and repeat, but towards the end, they put her in rehab, and then after the last one she passed away in Hospice.

Work has me busy. But I am stressed out as there will be a company wide trimming of the fat, starting with getting rid of what is not selling, up to letting go of people who's positions are redundant.

So I am sitting here at work wishing I could just vanish for awhile.

So sorry Writer. I know how close you to your Dad. And the recent memory of losing.your Mom has to make this doublely hard for you.

I hope your work will be understanding and give you time to take care of your Dad.

Thank you very much. It is hard to see my father, who is normally a strong man being brought low like this. I cant lose him too. Everyone around me is devastated, my wife and daughters go up to see him and play checkers with him. That is a tradition, everytime one of his kids was hospitalized he would come up right after work and spend time with us, play games, watch tv and sometimes steal a quick shower. He is the kindest, and funniest man I know, he could charm the pants off of anyone, and crack a joke that would make one laugh even in the darkest of times.

Sending you best wishes.  I am the dad with health problems now, and I worry about how it affects my kids. Be good to yourself.

Does your Dad take Lasix or similar diauretic (sp)?

I hope your dad recovers.

Also yeah check if he takes any meds that deplete potassium. Also if he is a licorice root consumer he should stop (candy or teas or raw root) as that also depletes potassium. Diabetes can also but one would assume they would have checked for that.

I have had potassium and magnesium deficiencies after my open-heart surgery in 2017. I think the diuretic they put me on for edema has also had something to do with that. But I take a supplement dose of both at bedtime. In my case, diabetes, the heart medications, and the diuretic, make a pretty powerful cocktail that depletes essential electrolytes. I know what it’s like to have low levels of those two in your system. And it will knock you on your can.

True.
Besides the fact you spell better than I, one loses potassium by urinating. Big problem with old people.

I appreciate you all, and all of the positivity coming from you. My dad's health has been in decline since my mom passed. He isn't diabetic, but the doctors are thinking there might be problems with his kidney's as he is not urinating properly on his own.

Do you know what his eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) is? My “it’s complicated” has ESRD and is on dialysis daily, so we know a lot about kidneys not working.

No, I don't. My father has only given permission to the doctors and nurses to share his conditions info with his sisters. I called to ask how he was, and all I get is "He is fine." from the nurse attending him. But I did learn he was transported to the rehab facility earlier this evening when I came up to play a game of battleship with him.

Hey writer, sorry for the issues you've been going through.  One question, is he passing out? There is a condition called vasovegal syncope which causes passing out. I was diagnosed in my twenties. Very common but rarely diagnosed.. They can treat with meds. Though my case I ended up with a pacemaker. Not as scary as it sounds.

Well wishes!

Thanks! But he passes out like he was instantly drugged and nothing anyone can do would rouse him. Like mouth open and drooling, almost stroke like conditions. I just returned to work from visiting him over my lunch break. Last night they sent him to the Rehab, and then the Rehab sends him back, and later at one am they send him back to rehab. Today he was a little more with it, but still tired and would zone out when I talked to him.

Yeah that sounds somewhat like it. But other than being tired from the stress of passing out you'd typically be fine. I think at this point they have probably ruled it out. Keeping good thoughts that they find the answers soon. Make sure to take care of yourself as well!
