Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, are all the “last fling” before Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, and a time that was historically observed by a forty day fast. The Orthodox still abstain from meat, bread, oil, and alcohol. I have never made it 40 days.

The Catholics choose something to “give up.” So the fast is as onerous as you wish to make it.

I'm a bit hindered by USA terminology.  To me poppers are drug related or modern plastic equivalents of press studs.  Never heard of applejack.

I bet you're have issues with some US sayings.  I had trouble with one myself yesterday. 


Pickle ball, haha.  Old people on a half sized tennis court hitting whiffle balls.  Living the RV life, seems everybody plays it wherever we go.  So, we decided to take it up and get to know the game a bit before we join the senior pickle ball circuit this winter in Florida.  Haha. Nothing like getting your butt handed to you by a 80 year old lady.

All reed instruments are woodwinds. As are flutes and piccolos.

If it has a metal mouthpiece it is considered a brass instrument. Everything from a tuba to a cornet.

The tricky one today is that a bassoon is a woodwind, but was not in the woodwind group. It was in the double double letters group.

Fortunately I got the first three groups and the poets came out in the wash.  Knew of Ezra Pound and Robert Frost but no idea about Olds and Bishop

Not reed instruments as such, but . . . 

I was watching a YouTube video in which the curator of the Duke University Chapel organ was explaining the various mechanisms. What I didn't know was that you can adjust the pitch of the reed pipes by adjusting the length of the reed.

I haven't tried the Connections puzzle, but I do have a collection of old documentaries of that name, hosted by science historian James Burke, in which he shows how unexpected connections can lead from discovery to discovery. Fascinating stuff and still available on YouTube and the Internet Archive.
