I thought it was a bullshit clue, because the state is Rhode Island, not Rhode. It would be like having “York” as a “northeast state.”

The clue specified "First word of a state in New England" and of the six New England states, there are only two that have two words, and one of them only has 3 letters in the first word.



Fun fact: Only four of the six New England states were part of the original Thirteen Colonies. Anyone want to know which two weren't?

Both Vermont and Maine were originally colonized by the French.

Vermont was part of New France until the 1760s, and its name comes from the French meaning "Green Mountain." It became a British colony in 1764, after the Seven Years War, and it became part of New York Colony. In 1777, it declared its independence from Britain and declared itself The Republic of Vermont. It was admitted as a state in 1791, making it the 14th State.

Maine was also a French colony. In the 1740s, the territory was split in two, with half controlled by the French and half by the British, and the British part became part of the Massachusetts colony. It seceded from Massachusetts in 1819, and it became the 23rd state in 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise. Interestingly, Maine's northern border with Canada wasn't confirmed until 20 years later.

I had the entire puzzle filled out except for 6across and 2 down in less than a minute and a half, and then brain stopped working. I dont know Indian spices so that one letter was holding me up for half a minute. Sooo irritating.
