A co-worker much younger than myself asked if I could recommend any non-fiction books.   After thinking on it part of the day, I saw him passing by and mentioned to him DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL by Anne Frank.  The first words out of his mouth were "Fuck that bitch."

Needless to say, I was taken aback.  He proceeded to ask me what's so great about it.  I told him basically the way it was written, and the conditions under which it was produced.  He then proceeded to tell me, "Big deal.  What about ICE agents fucking with Mexicans?"

Sure, so he's a Latino.  I can see him having that beef with ICE.  But this kid is either ignorant of history or stupid, which seems to be the case with many of our young people these days.   That's really no excuse.  If you are open to rational thought, then you know that all human experience is linked.  But there is no excuse for writing off the purposeful extermination of six million people with the words, "Yeah, but ICE..."  Which is basically what my co-worker did when he said of Anne Frank, "Fuck that bitch."

In order to get through the rest of my day, I put it in perspective by looking at him and thinking, "This from another genius who stares into his phone all day... and is so addicted to gambling, he's placing bets while he's supposed to be working."

Great book but not for young men. Suggest the Reacher series. Fiction but he does teach an occasional lesson your young guy might pick up. Tolerance, learning etc

There is a youtube channel called "Liberal Hivemind." They frequently show full grown adults acting like children. Case in point, video from yesterday, city council meeting. Citizen asking about honesty of mayor (mayor appoints known criminal to city manager position) and the mayor just loses it, gets up, starts screaming, and among other things says "You wanna go outside, right now?!?!"
In the same video, college Republicans have a card table set up on college square at center of campus. Guy in a dress walks up and starts making angry accusations, then overturns the card table and storms off like a nine year old.

In a video from 9 days ago, female swimmer Riley Gaines is addressing an on campus group about the whole trans male breaking into female sports subject when an anthroplogy professor walks in the room and tries to steal her thunder. Riley asks the prof "If, one hundred years from now they dig up a pair of skeletons, could they tell which one is male and which one is female?" He replies "No", at which point, the room bursts into laughter. The prof actually has the temerity to get angry.

And I wish I could remember the channel where I saw this: Conservatine group on campus has silent protest on college square. Angry female student, actually seen by campus cop, not 25 feet away, sees the angry female rip the sign out of their hands. As the cop and students pursue her, they finally reach her at the back end of the square. Apparently, there is like a 25-30 foot drop and she attempts to chuck the sign over the fence. The campus cop not only stops her, but also arrests her. Crying as she's being cuffed for theft, she says, "But you're supposed to be on our side."

These are examples of what I call the One Person/One Thing Fallacy. They've become a staple of social media (and, unfortunately, mainstream media as well), especially on the Right.

It's basic illogic: Someone cites one person saying or doing one thing, and then projects that one thing onto an entire group. The words and actions of the "guy in a dress" or the "anthropology professor" or the "corrupt mayor" or the "sign stealer" are presented as an example of "liberal hive mind" or deemed to representative of the thinking and actions of all liberals.

It's not. It's simply one person saying or doing one thing.

By the way, Riley Gaines is outspokenly anti-trans. Her campaign was engendered (pun intended) after she came in 5th in a swim meet, and the person who came in 4th was trans. She's also an unswerving Trump supporter, and she supports Trump's stolen election lies.

Here she is with her man at the CPAC Convention:

"Sometimes the best things in life are a hot girl and a cold beer."

Woo Miss B. Best thing I have read here in a very long time.

Buddhism advocates the habit of “dispassionate observation.” The intolerant are specialists is punching peoples’ buttons and drawing them into an emotional conflict that has nothing to do with the underlying premise. It is the fundamental nature of trolling.

The Lexington gunman had gender pronouns on his bank profile (as did every other employee). Hence, says QAnon, “gender” must be the reason he shot up the bank. This kind of fallacious (not fellatious) reasoning is why I can’t take anything the right says seriously.

That is exactly the point. While the two extremes are not “the same thing,” they use similar tactics to energize their base and push both extremes farther apart.

I have had time to process the incident upon which this post was based.  While other people may be quick to label the young man in the incident as an "anti-semitic latino" and myself as a "republican pedophile" (first of all, I am not a republican, secondly, I don't know what the other label has anything to do with my point of view of this), I see it as a young man blinded by ignorance, his whole existence guided by the modern day press and social media walking hand in hand vs. a man who grew up with actual  a hunger for knowledge guided by unbiased curiosity.  I can also get through an entire work shift without looking at my fucking cellphone (breaks are an exception, of course... I have a family... I check for phone calls and messages) whereas it seems this young man's whole world would be out of balance it he didn't check TikTok for thirty minutes.  Like I said, perspective.

I would have recommended Victor Frankel's "Man's search for Meaning."  It's far less likely he would have heard of it and had a reaction.
