I read an article the other day that really got under my skin. It was title something like "don't believe the hype, women don't want "dad bods" or some stupid shit like that. Naturally, since this is an article about what women want and what we prefer, it had to be written by a man, because who knows us better, right?... 😠

Now I'm just going to go out on a limb here and make an assumption, and guess he's a gym rat who wakes up, drinks a protein shake spends 3 hours lifting, eats lunch, looks at himself in a mirror for an hour, posts pics of his biceps on Instagram, lifts for another two hours, goes home, jerks off to his own glutes which provides him with another "protein shake" for dinner. Then he writes an ignorant article and gets paid for it.

Well F@#$ you buddy!!

One of the things that bothered me about this article is the pictures he had along with it. Not a single pic was of a man with a proper "dad bod". They were skinny with a big beer belly, or just overall out of shape. I honestly think he was feeling jealous that after all his time in the gym, majority of us regular everyday heterosexual women preferred guys with some belly on him. His article was that when we look at men, our "natural instincts kick in" and we gravitate towards men with perfect physiques with abs, muscles, and blah blah blah. The whole time I'm screaming at this dipshit that we are not controlled by this so called "natural instinct". I do have a personal preference, and have more say in my in men than this bs "natural instinct"

I know I post a lot of pics of guys with big muscles and a six pac, and it's very nice to look at and fantasize about, but deep down I dont really want that. It's like walking through the store and looking at all the mannequins with fine clothes, jewelry, and looking like a million bucks on a Milan runway, and then I turn around and bring home some nice jeans and tshirt that fits my tastes. Or better example, I love The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, but even if I was the richest woman in the world, I would never own it because I wouldnt feel comfortable with it in my home. It's too much.

Kind of a weird tangent I'm on here, I know, but I just wanted to set my personal record straight.  I LOVE a dad bod, my friends love dad bods, my aunt, and cousins married men with dad bods, I can easily assume my dad's girlfriend loves a dad bod, but too be honest he's getting more towards beer belly than dad bod. Nice arms, with broad shoulders, a good solid chest, and a huggable belly. That perfect balance of muscle to body fat. A body that doesn't make me feel I need to hit the gym five hours a day to keep up with him. A body that can do the heavy lifting when needed but doesnt shy away from burgers, drinks, and icecream.

Believe the hype, love the dad bod

I honestly believe most gym rats have narcissistic personality disorder. Who wants to be with a man who spends more time looking at himself in the mirror than at you? I don’t expect my partner to be a perfect physical specimen. And fortunately for me, my partners have not demanded that of me. Yeah, I got a dad bod. And dad’s gonna fuck the shit out of you.

Welcome to the world of the "power fantasy". (I assume this was in a "men's health" mag; feel free to tell me I'm wrong.) A program here actually dissected this in detail. Basically, they do it to shift stock, so they appeal to their base. They used Hugh Jackman as an example: on the men's health cover, he was Hugh Jacked-Man (to speak metaphorically), sans shirt, but on a women's mag, he was more paternal and nurturing. Again, playing to the fantasy (power fantasy in the former case, fantasy of equals in the latter).

Now, don't get me wrong, there are girls out there for whom the power fantasy works. They want that big buff guy who works out in the gym; that's what turns them on. But yeah, they aren't the majority, as you said, or even one of the largest groups. And hell, my wife loves the slight dad bod I have anyway.

Another thing about the Dad Bod and the Dad Look is that many of us earned that body from being dads.  I was a gym rat back when I was in my teens working out for various sports, to move heavy items, and to look good naked.  That was a generation ago.  Now, my six pack is a half keg, but if I need to I can still sling around heavy items and work for hours on end.  Of course, everything is "it's not heavy, it's awkward."  It's actually heavy, I'm trying to save face.  Nowadays, like most dads of young kids I eat like crap, barely take care of myself, and spend more time planning play dates or activities for the kids than I do trips to the gym or working out.  I've lost count of how many plates of cold chicken nuggets or half-eaten PBJ sandwiches I've finished in the last decade.  I will spend hours each week cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the kids because it's what needs to be done.

According to the wife that's some of the sexiest shit possible.  Raising the kids.  And the Dad Bod is the symbol of that.  It says "I will put their well being above my personal goals, their health above my comfort, their wants and needs above mine.  I just want a little comfort."

When they're older, then we'll spend time getting back in shape and losing some of the extra weight. But for now, job number one is making sure they grow up.  If that means a little extra around the middle, so be it.

Always close the program you're running before exiting the holodeck

That's a fantastic post!

Do you remember where you read that article? I'd love to read it (and laugh at it).

It was online. Ironically I was drooling over pics of Chris Pratt's dad bod when I saw it pop up. I clicked the link and started reading, and then I got irritated by it, scanned through most when he started talking "the science isn't there"

Thanks. I do that all the time.

Meanwhile, my friend Collette was a big fan of the actor David Harbour, and she would drool over his dad body.

MASSIVE STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4 SPOILER ALERT!

Then she saw him in the last episode of Stranger Things. At one point, he removes his shirt to reveal a trim figure and ripped abs.

She was sooooo disappointed.

Hell yeah! I had that exact reaction!!

In season one he had a scene where he comes out with his police shirt open, and hes looking a little sweaty, and I'm sitting there biting my lip thinking... yes please!

Then the reveal when he's talking to joyce about the weight loss, and my jaw dropped and I'm thinking, he's too skinny. Hes still a good looking man, but I liked his body better before.

Here's the article. Just the first pic alone with the oversized beer belly tells me he has no clue what a dad bod is. Apparently he thinks dad bod is any body type that "out of shape"

I do think the term dad bod is getting a little lost in translation. My version of a dad bod is as I described above. You can see muscle definition in arms, chest, and shoulders, but he has a belly on him.

Dad bod

Definitely a Dad bod

Not a dad bod (sorry Seth Rogan)

Author sounds like someone who spends way too much time at the gym, then gets pissed off when he sees women being attracted to someone who doesn't spend way too much time at the gym.

Personal opinion. It may mean that now, but where I'm from, when we say dad bod, we mean david harbour in pic one.

The chris pratt pic is a little more in shape, but I'd still do him like hes the only thing sustaining my life.

If seth's chest didn't sag like that, and he had a little more muscle there, then he'd qualify in my book. But as is, I dont see it that way.

And the author is a PhD and teaches psychology I think.

Due to my professional circumstances, I know  lot of people with PhDs.

And for many of them, it isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Totally agree. I knew a guy with two PhDs and he definitely wasn't twice as smart as the guys with only one.

PhDs come in assorted sizes and flavors. At conference receptions you see folks checking out each other's creds by asking where they got their doctorates, in what field they did their research, who was their thesis advisor, and how many papers they've published recently in top-tier journals.

One of the weirdest guys I ever met was a nobel laureate. So weird that his colleague had to go around apologizing for the odd behavior.

Remember the fellow I was complaining about the other day?  The one we determined has narcissistic personality disorder?  Yes, he has a Ph.D and JD, and insists on being called doctor. Which no one does, but he does.

Love you post.  Would also like to add that what I have noticed is that mostly it has to do with personality.  You can have a rock hard body and shitty attitude and that makes you unattractive.  At least that is what I feel.  I love looking at models, porn stars, random hot women on the street.  However, if you have bitch written across your forehead, then that is a huge turn off for me.

Just to clarify, there is a difference between being sassy, witty, direct, or even a bit challenging.  Those are all fine.  What I mean by having bitch written across your face is that you not only walk around with either "I am better than everyone here" or "I am in a perpetual shitty mood", but you a generally just terrible to be around.

I feel like this applies to women and men, but I don't want to speak for the women in the chat as well.

There is someone for everyone and this guy who wrote the article you are referring to has probably been rejected by any women deeper than a puddle and he didn't like it and it hurt his tiny little feelings.

Love your posts Sheila...keep them cumming ;)

If you Google “dad bods”:

It seems to imply fit but not buff.

My current financial advisor has a PhD in Philosophy and we joked with him that his doctorate has qualified him to serve coffee at Starbucks. He actually agreed with me.

That is all.
