"We call on the Palestinian and Israeli sides to immediately ceasefire, renounce violence, show the necessary restraint," Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

What a GREAT idea. You first Russia.

I came on to WRMD earlier to mention the war, but then S's news hit me.
This has me so sad.  Taking civilian hostages.  A music festival.  Sickening.

So much for a two state solution. That will never happen now. And I'm sure Netanyahu is pleased about that.

In fact I suspect Israel's intelligence services knew about the pending attack and did nothing.

Thoughts concerning Ukraine, Gaza, and too many other places to mention.

Something I find interesting..

Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine, all share a common ancestor in an old kingdom named Kievan Rus, which stretched all the way from the border with Finland down to the Black Sea. As the name suggests, the capital city was Kyiv .

Kievan Rus was actually founded by vikings from Sweden, also known as the Varangians. They traveled east across the Baltic Sea to places like Lake Ladoga by modern-day St. Petersburg, down the Volkhov River to the settlement of Novgorod, and eventually down the Dnipro River to Kyiv.

The word Rus is derived from an old Norse term meaning "people who row," so the Varangian influence is still seen in places like Belarus and Russia, that have Rus in their name. Russia is literally called Rusland or Russland in several languages, aka Land of the Rus.

One of the reasons I find it interesting in the context of this conflict is that Putin wants to claim Ukraine "belongs" to Russia, and the Kievan Rus is supposed to be one argument in favor of that. But the heart of power was Kyiv, and Russian cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg didn't even exist at the time. The most important place in Russia at the time, Novgorod, isn't even in the top 50 Russian cities by population these days.*

*I should add, all mentions of Novgorod are to Veliky Novgorod. There's a much larger Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod, but that was established nearly 400 years later

I have traced my family lines back to Rurik of Novgorod, grandson of Viking Ragnar Lodbrok, which really explains so much. Novgorod was the original capital of Kyivan Rus. And it was the invasion of the Mongols that caused a migration of many Rus to the area now known as Moscow.

So you are correct in noting that Kyiv owns Russia, not the other way around. And Russians are the descendants of the pussies who fled in front of the Mongols. Which also explains so much.

Also interesting...

Another justification for the "special military operation" in Ukraine is that Putin supposedly wants to help rid Ukraine of the hordes of Nazis that exist there allegedly.

The Wagner PMC is/was tasked with assisting Russia with the Nazi hunt. But why is Wagner called Wagner? Because Richard Wagner was Hitler's favorite composer, and one of the founders of the Wagner Group, Dmitry "It's Just A Fleshwound" Utkin, was a Nazi admirer and even had several Nazi tattoos.

So a Russian Nazi was helping hunt imaginary Ukrainian Nazis? What the fuck, Russia.

My kids spent their day in an air raid shelter:

Russia attacked Ukraine with several waves of missiles on Saturday morning, the Ukrainian and Russian militaries said, putting the entire country under an air-raid alert and sending people rushing for shelter as bangs were heard in several cities.

The attack, which started around 5 a.m. local time and lasted about three hours, involved nearly 40 cruise and hypersonic missiles fired from different regions, including the Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea and the Caspian Sea, to the southeast of Ukraine. They were directed at cities including Kyiv, the capital, and Lviv, near the border with Poland.

It followed Russia’s recent strategy for large-scale air assaults: waves of different types of aerial weapons launched almost simultaneously from multiple locations and aimed at various targets, with the goal of overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses.

The Ukrainian Air Force said that it had shot down eight missiles — a low interception rate compared with previous assaults — but that more than 20 other missiles and drones had missed their targets because of electronic jamming. Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that its missiles had hit “Ukrainian military-industrial complex facilities” that produce shells, gunpowder and drones. Neither of the claims could be independently verified.

I know how close you are to this International horny. As the free world allies are considering scaling back on their support , other despots around the world are helping Russia rearm.

The toll this is taking on the innocent, like your kids, is beyond criminal. Russian wat crimes continue to mount as we pass along some munitions and a few guns. Ukraine needs more air power to help stave off their attackers.

Well trained and been made compliant....by my cat Neville

I hear that Ukraine soldiers are playing the US National Anthem to piss off Russian troops, and it's working. Making them fight angry instead of smart.

The GQP party of Putler is going to make things very tough on Ukraine. Vladimir got his biggest wish with a diaper wearing orange man. State secrets are no longer safe, so I predict the rest of the free world will do a work-around that does not involve the US. Bubba has his $2.00 gasoline, until he doesn’t.
