Putin continues to make himself a monster with the attack on civilian targets while on the battlefield Russian losses keep piling up. Thousands of young, fighting age men are fleeing the country to avoid the war. That leaves unqualified conscripts who are sent to the front with only a weeks training

CANNON FODDER!!!

This looks like Germany at the end of WW II. Kids and old men poorly equipped and fed. Only it took the Allies several years to achieve that. Little Ukraine has done this to what was considered a super power in a few months.

When they win the world needs to do all they can to help this brave country rebuild.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces killed about 63,380 Russian soldiers from February 24 to October 12, including 270 in the past day alone.

Total US troop deaths in Vietnam?  58,220, over 20 years time.  Putin has lost more soldiers in 8 months.

Interesting thing about the Russian tanks I never really realized. The ammo is basically stored in a large ring underneath the crew. That's fine when the tank is hit straight on, because the armor is usually thick enough to stop incoming rounds. However, the armor is thinner on the sides, and the top of the turret offers almost no protection. I guess that's because the T72s were designed at a time when the main threat to tanks were other tanks, which of course can't hit the top of a turret.

So what happens with a Javelin hits from above or an NLAW detonates from above, the blast goes down and into the crew compartment. If someone manages to survive the initial hit, then they soon get vaporized by the much bigger secondary explosion, which occurs when that ring of ammo underneath the crew cooks off and blows up. That's why exploding Russian tanks also have their turrets fly sky high.

From what I understand, the Ukrainian forces also rely heavily on T72 tanks, but the big difference is that they face other tanks and rocket propelled grenades, not anti-tank missiles like the Russians, and so the Ukrainian tanks are in that sense not as vulnerable as the Russian ones

Good example of exactly what you are talking about.

Much of the “armor” on Russian tanks is actually plastic, filled with sand. Part of the incredible procurement corruption that has left Russia with an inferior fighting force. Few troops have ballistics helmets. They merely have plastic “bump helmets” designed to protect from falling debris.

Here's another fun one. Look at that turret pop  :o

Putin would probably refer to that turret toss as a 'special orbital operation'  :emot_laughing:

My girls’ uncle Maks, a fine young man I have known online for several years, is in the UAF. He stepped on a mine outside of Odessa yesterday, and lost half his leg. War just got personal.

I'm so sorry Toe. That's terrible news. It's one thing to see it on TV or read about.it in the paper. When it's someone you know and are close to it puts a whole new face on things.

A while back I read that Ukraine soldiers who have been wounded, especially.loss of limbs, are getting treatment over here.ay be something you want to check into.

I was too young for Vietnam, and too old for Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Maks is actually the first person I personally know to be wounded or killed in war. I guess I’ve been lucky in that sense. But I feel horrible for him. I have photographs, but I won’t post them. It’s just terrible to see a vibrant young man badly wounded.

I also have so many photos of him and his comrades proudly posing with their weapons and joking with each other. It just reminds you how everything can change in a moment.

You see the number all the time about wounded and those killed, and it's easy to just shake you're head because to most, that's all they are, just numbers. But when you personally know, or are related to "1" everything changes!

I hope the best for you, him, your girls, and all his comrades and countrymen/women.

Russian troops are now receiving orders to cease offensive activities in several regions. Particularly in Donetsk oblast. The reason? Desertions, surrenders, and refusal to follow orders. Morale is deemed to be at an all time low.

One time when hen I was in the Army, I picked y a newspaper the Army put out each week. A regular feature was a list of KIA.(Killed In Action)

I'd skim over it, but never saw anyone I'd known. Then came the day I saw three names of people I'd been in Basic Training with. I'd never made any close attachments in the 8 weeks we'd been together, but I knew them trained with them, bitched about the Army together. One was from Iowa like me and we had our induction physicals at the same time. He was a short.chubby guy and always happy and joking around. At our physical he got to the weighing and height part. He was told to take his shoes of before getting on the scale. He did and after recording his weight they measured his height. The soldier doing this looked at the result and said, "Put your shoes back on." Back on the scale and was told now you pass.

He never should have been in the Army and could have fought it. Why he didn't was his decision. A decision that got him killed. I never picked up that paper again. Not that it mattered. Young men kept getting killed...for many years after.

I've been deployed overseas and known people, and been friends with people who had been killed. Eating lunch with them one day, and then gone the next. What makes this so much more tragic that majority of Americans would never know is that these brave soldiers are fighting on a front line that could literally be in their front yard. Finding out that the people that were killed an the airstrike weren't just fellow soldiers, but the men, women, and children you are fighting to protect.

True definition of a nightmare.

MOSCOW—Two recruits opened fire at a Russian military training ground near the border with Ukraine on Saturday, leaving 11 people dead and 15 injured, the state news agency TASS reported.
The shootings happened during a live-fire training exercise in the Belgorod region. The assailants opened fire with small arms before they in turn were fatally shot, the report said, citing the Russia’s Ministry of Defense.

Not sure if here or the "Republicans" thread would be a better fit

Looks like Republicans and Putin becoming best buddies again.
