My wife’s grandfather fought at Kursk. Her mother is buried near there.

The Russians were defending their homeland. The Ukrainians are defending theirs now.

What we are seeing here are Russian conscripts from the hinterlands. Poorly trained. Poorly equipped. Poorly led. Cannon fodder.

It is all falling apart now. Ukraine has completely re-taken the Kharkiv region. That includes the the second largest city in Ukraine, that has been in Russian control since March. And now they have completely isolated tens of thousands of Russian troops on the west side of the Dnipro River. Reportedly they are negotiating surrender.

Russia's 810th marine brigade, based normally in the Crimea, saw 80 percent to its unit wiped out during recent fighting. When Kherson falls, Putin’s goose is cooked. He will be deposed.

I was meaning no disrespect, but the russians at Kursk managed to win the worlds largest tank war, but now are getting their asses handed to them by the defenders. And the russians proving their ineptitude.

I’m very deep into this war.  I follow all the tactical and combat threads and read all of the reports issued by military experts. The consensus is Putin will never do that, because there will be an immediate coup to remove him. Going nuclear is not just an escalation. It is declaring war on the world. Russia has been irreparably damaged already, and it will only get worse. Once winter hits.

If Putin resorts to using nukes of any kind, I expect one of two things:

1. His removal from office or assassination by his own people. It'll be the Gulag or the grave.

or/possibly also:

2. NATO stepping in. They won't put up with that so close to their countries. Other non-NATO countries might even join in.

No way Putin remains in power for long if he resorts to tactical nukes.

PH is right. Nukes spell his doom, one way or the other.

One thing that's been really interesting to me has been learning a few things about military doctrine, and how the Russian approach differs from much of the rest of the world.

As I understand, the Russians use a strict top-down approach when handing out orders and information. Basically, orders and info trickles down from the top rank to the rank below, then a little bit of that to the rank below that, etc. Soldiers are micromanaged almost to the individual level and free-thought and initiative isn't tolerated, whereas individual soldiers also don't know much about what's going on or what the next move is. That would explain why some of the Russians honestly thought they were going on to the next training mission when they were actually entering Ukraine, or why so many were so easily convinced that Ukraine is a giant Nazi theme park.

Meanwhile, the US, Europe, and Ukraine, use a 'mission command' approach, where information is shared more freely, soldiers have more freedom of thought and action, team work is not only tolerated but also encouraged, etc.

One of the big advantages is supposed to be that if a group of soldiers loses contact with the rest, or their commanding officer catches a bullet, then they still have enough information and initiative to complete their mission. Meanwhile, under the Russian top-down approach, a loss of contact or a commanding officer basically paralyses that group of soldiers, because they don't have the information and freedom to do anything on their own.

Russians idea is just to blast the hell out of everything. There's no consideration for their troops. They're cannon fodder. Ruskies rely on artillery fire from a distance and mopping up with tanks.

During WW II, Gen. Eisenhower was escorting a Russian general showing him preparations for D Day. When Ike showed him special tanks that had rollers on the front to clear mine fields, the Russian said why go to all this trouble? We just order a company.of men to run across the mine field

Such is the mind set of the Russians.

Such is the mind set of the Russians.

My grandfather fought in WW2 as part of the engineering corps, and said the Russians were the sloppiest, worst/least trained soldiers he ever saw, not much more than thugs. Things haven't changed. On the other hand, the Spetznaz (Russian Special Forces; they're ALL Spetznaz, do not have diffrent SF groups like the Green Berets, SEALs, etc) are scary as hell. Deaths during training are commonplace.

Invasions of Russia during the past have famously failed, most notably by Napoleon and the Nazis. But those were due to the troops not being prepared, not because of the Russian army. And a modern invasion attempt in winter would likely include thermal and incendiary weapons, which didn't really exist in WW2 excepf for the now-obsolete flamethrower.

That’s why HIMARS have been so effectively used by the Ukrainian defenders. Multiple “command centers” far behind battle lines have been taken out in recent weeks, resulting in multiple deaths in the chain of command, and chaos on the battlefield for Russia troops waiting for someone to tell them what to do. The “second most powerful army in the world“ is looking more like a paper tiger. I don’t think Russia will ever have the same level of respect again. And I noticed today that there are border fights already breaking out between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The natives are growing restless.

They blew the majority of the military budget on propaganda, and forgot that teaching their soldiers cool tricks for music videos doesn't translate into fighting well in a real war
