9/11 happened when I was 40. A friend, same age, also a vet, went down to the recruiting station to ask if we could re-up. Worst case scenario, we could do guard duty at the bases while the younger men go off to fight. He came back and said that they weren't interested in either of us. Two years later we both got letters begging us to re-up. Nope. They had their chance two years earlier.

So, here we are 21 years later. I have way too much knowledge, especially with the Russians (I'm a Cold War vet) to be sidelined. I actually wouldn't mind, even in the cold, to be on the front lines. This is my war. This is what I trained for.

Same here. I was an eye witness to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. I was staying in a Polish farmhouse not far from the border, and saw massive tanks hidden in the trees outside the village. At night some of the Russian soldiers would sneak off to the farmhouses and beg for food and cigarettes and vodka, especially vodka. They had no idea where they were, or what they were supposed to be doing. A few days later the tanks disappeared and re-appeared rolling over the border into Czechoslovakia.

History repeats itself.

The USSR back then was not run by an egotistical narcissist and former head of the KGB like Russia is ruled today. My father lost cousins when Russia  occupied Czechoslovakia.  I wonder how Trump would have reacted to Putin's invasion if he was still president? The two men are cut from the same cloth.

Two words for our former president who refuses to denounce Putin and the invasion of Ukraine:

General George S. Patton on Russians:

The difficulty in understanding the Russian is that we do not take cognizance of the fact that he is not a European, but an Asiatic, and therefore thinks deviously. We can no more understand a Russian than a Chinaman or a Japanese, and from what I have seen of them, I have no particular desire to understand them, except to ascertain how much lead or iron it takes to kill them. In addition to his other Asiatic characteristics, the Russian has no regard for human life and is an all-out son of bitch, barbarian, and chronic drunk.

This is the sketch by Hartmann that inspired The Bogatyr Gates (The Great Gate of Kiev/The Heroes Gate) in Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

A Ukrainian woman has won widespread admiration for her bravery after the BBC posted footage of her offering sunflower seeds to an armed Russian soldier so that Ukraine’s national flower would bloom once the aggressor had perished in the soil.
A translation of her remarks to the Russian soldier are translated in the article below.

It's apparent that Putin had no idea what he was getting into when he gave the order to attack a peaceful country. Even if the Ruskies overpower the Ukraine military the citizens are armed and ready to continue to fight.

Putin has united the world, against him. More than 20 European countries are sending military help. Former soldiers from many nations are flocking to Poland to cross the border and join the fight against the Russians. Germany, because of it's aggressive past avoided a number of conflicts, but has done a 180 by not only allowing the transit of weapons from The Netherlands to Ukraine, but has added to the weapons. Germany is doubling their military budget and severing energy ties with Russia. In a first, very neutral Switzerland is joining dozens of other countries with economic sanctions against Russia. The Russian ruble is now worth one American penny. The next 48 hours are crucial, but help is on the way for the Ukrainians. If they survive the next week, the tide will turn against the Russians.

All we can hope then is that Vlad the Impaler won't feel threatened and completely snaps and feels the urge to press the red button.
Quote
In a 2018 documentary, President Putin commented that "…if someone decides to annihilate Russia, we have the legal right to respond. Yes, it will be a catastrophe for humanity and for the world. But I'm a citizen of Russia and its head of state. Why do we need a world without Russia in it?"

I'm not okay, you're not okay. But hey, that's okay

Ukraine said that Russia had sent members of the Kadyrovites unit from Chechnya to kill Zelensky, and that Ukrainian forces had found and eliminated them. What I find really interesting is that Ukraine allegedly received the information about the Kadyrovites from members of the Russian security service, FSB.

Of course, the thing about the FSB agents could just be a claim that Ukraine made up in hopes of hurting Russian morale, but if it's actually true, then things really, really aren't going well for Putin.

Putin is afraid. Saw video this morning of him meeting with other government officials. All the officials were crammed together at one end of a huge conference table. Putin was at the other end with many feet of space between them.

Maybe the officials are just afraid that crazy is contagious.

War. The situation at 10.00 on March 4.

Russia was defeated in the battle for Kyiv, and is throwing all its forces to the south to capture Mariupol, Donbass, Nikolaev, Odessa, and the entire Black Sea coast of Ukraine

1. The Russian command is focusing its efforts on capturing and securing in the south and east of Ukraine, on the territory of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Kherson, Nikolaev and Odessa regions in order to destroy the Ukrainian economy by blockading ports;

2. Mariupol remains the only city currently standing in the way of Putin's plans to take over eastern Ukraine. Mariupol was in operational encirclement, heavy fighting is going on outside the city. Mariupol is a key city of Donbass, a port, an industrial center, it cannot be categorically surrendered. The enemy is constantly ironing the city with aircraft and artillery. All life support systems are destroyed, there is a humanitarian catastrophe in the city, this is done to cause the civilian population to flee and facilitate the assault. The well-known regiment of the National Guard, the marines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and other defense forces heroically defend the city despite powerful enemy attacks;

3. The enemy has occupied Energodar, and is threatening to disconnect the nuclear power plant from the Ukrainian energy system and power supply to industry;

4. The enemy occupied Kherson, fighting is going on in the area of the city;

5. The Armed Forces of Ukraine firmly hold Volnovakha, and repel attacks in the Orekhovo region, maintaining a foothold on the outskirts of Mariupol, however, the Russian command is trying with all its might to push our troops as far as possible from Mariupol;

6. The Russian offensive on Nikolaev and Voznesensk was repulsed with heavy losses, but new enemy reserves continue to advance in this direction;

7. Direct attacks on Kharkov were successfully repelled, the situation is confidently controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the entire defense perimeter of the city. The Russian command continues attacks west of Kharkov;

8. East of Kharkov, the Russians have occupied Balakleya and are threatening to attack Izyum and encircle Kharkov from the east, hanging over the northern flank of the JFO grouping in the Donbass. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are effectively destroying the occupiers in these areas, the Russians are shelling settlements over the area;

9. Russia continues to occupy the wedged west of Kyiv, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a counterattack near Makarov and drove the Russians out of the Zhytomyr highway, inflicting huge losses on the invaders, the Russians are transferring new reserves to this area;

10. Direct attacks on Kyiv have stopped, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are conducting active and effective military operations in the Gostomel region, the losses of the enemy in the Kyiv region are very high, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have driven the Russians out of many cities, including Bucha, Irpin;

11. The heroic defense of Chernigov continues, the enemy is constantly shelling the city;

12. The heroic defense of Sumy and Akhtyrka, the city under Russian fire, continues. The enemy suffered huge losses in the Sumy region;

13. To fight the people of Ukraine, Russia used the tactics of total terror - aviation and artillery destroy the civilian life support system of Ukrainian cities. Aircraft bombed the Akhtyrskaya thermal power plant, an electrical substation in Sumy, Mariupol, Kharkov. Ukrainian mobile phones are switched off in the occupied territories in order to cut off communication between residents. Rocket strikes are carried out on densely populated residential areas in all Ukrainian cities of central and eastern Ukraine, dozens of houses, schools, and public buildings have been destroyed.
Conclusions:

1. The situation remains tense on all fronts. Everywhere except in a number of directions in the south, the Russians received a powerful rebuff and suffered huge losses, which sharply reduced their ability to attack, and also led to troops fleeing in many directions, to the loss of many hundreds of pieces of military equipment.

2. The situation, which requires close attention, is currently developing in Mariupol, Kherson and Energodar, Nikolaev, Voznesensk;

3. Mobilization of the Ukrainian army has only started after the war began, so a lot has to be done on the go, hence why, despite hundreds of thousands of volunteers, the enemy, in some areas of the battlefront, has managed to demonstrate numerical advantage and squeeze past Ukrainian settlements.

4. The main factor in the superiority of the enemy is air supremacy. Russian ground forces are inferior to the Ukrainians in motivation and training, but they are superior in mobility, in the number of armored vehicles and artillery, in the use of ballistic and cruise missiles, and aviation. To disorganize the defense, Russia uses large-scale strikes on any settlements in order to force the civilian population to flee.

5. If Ukraine receives an emergency reinforcement of air defense systems, at least as simple and mobile as the American Avenger, and such as the Buk, which are in service with a number of European countries, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive a significant increase in their capabilities. The efforts of friends of Ukraine should be directed to the supply of fighters, the arrival of volunteer pilots, and the supply of air defense systems.

6. The main advantage of the people of Ukraine in this war is our unity and readiness to fight to the end. Now the country is putting itself into a mode of large-scale self-mobilization. The supply of weapons and air defense systems will allow us to achieve even greater success in the near future and protect our cities from sudden breakthroughs by Russian columns.

7. It is necessary to make every effort to harass the Russian troops in all sectors of the front, inflict losses wherever possible, since such harassing actions, combined with artillery and Bayraktar strikes, are capable of breaking through the enemy’s resistance in any direction.

8. To complete this review, I will say five words, the most important today: Mariupol, Energodar, Kherson, Nikolaev, Voznesensk.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR legend Richard Childress says he pledged to send 1 million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine as soldiers and citizens defend their country from the Russian military.

During an appearance on Fox News Wednesday, Childress said he was moved by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's spirit to defend his country.

"I heard Zelenskyy say he didn't want out, he needed ammunition," Childress said.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner then called Fred Wagenhals, the CEO of AMMO Inc., about how they could make it happen. Childress told Brian Kilmeade that Wagenhals immediately offered to begin production on ammunition for Ukrainian fighters.

Childress said what's happening in Ukraine should be a wake-up call for Americans and said it underscores the importance of the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms.

"To see people in Ukraine fighting, it's terrible to see the lives being lost over there," Childress said. "We have to do all we can, and I felt with AMMO Inc. and myself, we're doing the right thing and we're going to get that ammunition as quick as we can to them."

Childress resigned from the National Rifle Assocation's board of directors in 2019. He said at the time the decision was so he could focus on his businesses.

Childress said he is working with several government agencies on getting the ammunition delivered but said a private courier will be needed to get it to Ukraine quickly.
