Does anyone here play this? My friends are all talking about it, and posting pictures of their scores, but I have no idea what it is. Is it an app? Or a website? In the NYT?

It is apparently a game involving guessing the word of the day. I think the object is to get the word with the fewest number of guesses.

Wiki says:  Wordle is a web-based word game developed by Josh Wardle. Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with feedback given for each guess in the form of colored tiles indicating when letters match or occupy the correct position.

I have Googled it a few times but no luck so far. Apparently the NYT bought it last month for an undisclosed seven figure plus sum.

Each day there is a new five-letter word, and you have six attempts to guess the word.

Letters that are in the word and in the correct spot are green, those in the word but in the incorrect spot are orange/yellow, and those that aren't in the word at all are gray.

I guess part of the excitement is that you only have six daily  tries in theory.. of course, you can just go back and clear your cookies/cache and then pretend like you got it on the first try lol

Meh. It’s okay, but I don’t see what everyone is worked up about.

I do two NYT crosswords daily, and a word game where they give you six letters and you see how many words you can create.

Ha ha, I did it four😝😝😝

To be honest. It was kind of luck that I did it. I was just going to put the A at the front just to see if it belonged in the word, and as soon as I started spelling it out, it just clicked.

I’ve only played once, so I’m hardly an expert. But a green square means the correct letter in the correct position. A yellow square means a correct letter in the wrong position. And a gray square means that the letter is not in the word. So you should never use a gray square letter again.

So here it today’s SPOILER ALERT:



Always play the green squares in the same spot.
Always play the yellow squares but never in the same spot (eventually it will become green when you find the correct location.
Never play a gray square letter again. It is not in the word.

Well now that I’ve actually played the game, that little picture makes sense. But you can imagine not knowing what the game was about, and my friends were posting those little photos, and I was just going WTF?

Ugh.  The worst when there are so many options for the last letter.   But it's part of the strategy in guess one and two (and possibly 3). My guess two is always completely different letters.
