Yesterday I completed the second cycle on my Chemotherapy. Each cycle is done over a two week period. The first session I receive two different cancer fighting drugs. One of the drugs is heavy duty and takes an hour for the IV to drip in. That's followed by a second drug that's milder and only take a half hour to administer. Oh, before the drugs I get a half hour IV that helps prevent nausea. So far I've not had the sickness that many cancer patients suffer with.

That's week one of the cycle. Yesterday I went in for the second half of the cycle which is just the milder drug I receive the first week. Now I've finished two cycles. After the fourth cycle they'll evaluate my progress and see how much the treatment has helped.

Again...there's no cure for me. Cancer had spread too far by the time it was discovered. There is hope of adding a few years to my life tho'. Time to get all my affairs in order.

Brief update:
Went to VA for a possible chemotherapy treatment. First order of business is a blood test. Red blood cell levels must be high enough to withstand the treatment. The cancer fighting drugs will lower them, so levels must be high enough to withstand the treatment.

My recent hospital visit had lowered my numbers, but yesterday's blood test showed I'd bounced back a lot. The head Oncologist made the decision for me to wait two more weeks for chemo. That will give my body more recovery time from the recent bowel obstruction and red blood cells can come up even higher.

Does what you eat (salads) make a difference? Maybe more cheese? That would make it fun for you.

Serious question, I don't know.

Red meat helps raise my hemoglobin. There's lots of other stuff too. Don't know where cheese falls in there. But, I do like cheese ;D

I'm glad that you are doing all you can to fight and then recover from each chemo session.  I'm glad to hear it is going OK so far but am sorry that you need to go through it.

My mom's had cancer twice and it is a journey.

Yesterday was PET scan day for me. That involves a huge machine like an MRI beast. The scan shows areas where cancer is present in the body.

I was to report at 7:30 AM. Fasting was required including no coffee  :emot_weird:.  First thing to happen was an IV was inserted and some chemical was injected that helps the machine "see" the cancer. Then I was treated to a bottle of barium. That comes in flavors...banana, berry or mocha. I took the berry and yes, still is nasty and tastes like chalk.

There's a one hour waiting period for the injected chemical and barium to circulate in my body. Finally I'm inserted into the scanner. About 20 minutes of being moved back and forth through the tube. Finally released, my first action was to scarf down the candy bar I'd brought with me. I don't do fasting well.

I headed home knowing it would be a few days before the scan was read and available for me to see on on line account. Then next week to get it explained in English at my Oncology appointment.

As I walked in my back door, the phone rang and it was my Oncology nurse practitioner.  Hey, she says, I have your PET scan results. I was stunned to say the least. Never have test results come back so fast.

The results:
It was good news and bad news. The chemo therapy has been doing some good. Prostrate responding well as the lymph nodes showing improvement. What doesn't look good are more spots of cancer on the bones. So... another bone biopsy ahead for me

Hugs Bob. I don’t know how a PET scan works. Can you do that with your new stent? Obviously yes, so I guess it’s not magnetic?

I have no idea either how it works. Not magnetic like.MRI. was able to have phone and other metal items with me.

The result is a picture that glows in all the cancer spots. Except bladder and prostrate. They glow from urine and man juice. That's why I need bone biopsy to see if new bone cancer is caused by the bladder.

PET scan use radioactive tracers. Think a giant geiger detector but more precise. They give an injection with radioactive materials. These injections makes areas where diseases and cancers show brighter. It'll show where everything is being collected, but bot all spots may be cancer.

Once again my next chemo treatment will be delayed.  I was scheduled to start the next cycle on the 31st. The delay this time...Covid-19. It was inevitable with the wife testing positive Sunday. I felt like there was a cold coming on Wednesday morning and decided to test again. I was negative on Sunday. Wednesday tested positive. It's like a mild cold. Runny nose and some congestion. No biggie.

I contacted my cancer nurse practitioner and she went to work on my behalf. There is the possibility the Covid could worsen as the cancer makes me more susceptible to infections.   Found out I can't take the antiviral pill that's out. To do so I'd have to stop taking a couple drugs I need and can't stop taking. Instead I'm going to the VA emergency department for an antiviral IV that will take 3 hours, plus I have to stay another hour so they can keep an eye on me for side effects.

At least I have variety in my life. Plus I'm getting to learn so much about medicine and my old worn out body.
