Three Kind of Politicians

This may be from a comedy bit somewhere or it may be something I made up.  I'm not sure.

I believe there are only really three types of politicians.

1. The Honest Politician - Yes, there ARE honest politicians.  These are people who truly get into politics to serve others.  They don't make huge waves and they don't get huge publicity except when they vote against the party line because it is best for their constituents.

2. The Addict/Coper - The second type of politician is the addict or coper.  Maybe they got into politics for good reasons, but eventually the money and power took hold of them.  They lie and do what is necessary to retain their status/power but have a hard time dealing with it.  Deep down, they feel guilty.  Behind closed doors they are alcoholics, drug addicts, or sex addicts.  They are never truly happy because they can't live with themselves.

3. The Sociopath - Sadly, there are a LOT of sociopaths in politics.  These people will gladly lie straight to your face, gut you when you turn around, and not wipe the smile off their face while doing it.  These people do not care who they take advantage of, who they lie to, who they have sex with, or who they fuck over, so long as it is in their best interests.  Sadly, I believe many presidents and presidential candidates can fall into this category.

Clinton - (Either Bill or Hilary) Sociopath
Trump - Narcissistic Sociopath
Biden - Senile Sociopath
Bush Jr - Clueless Sociopath
Bush Sr. - DEFINITELY A SOCIOPATH
JFK - Did great things but think about it, all the women, lies and deceit?  SOCIOPATH
Nixon - Sociopath

Note: I didn't put Obama in here.  I don't believe he is a sociopath.  Probably manipulated by others and definitely walked the democrat party line, but I cannot in good faith say I think he is a sociopath.

     I do believe there are those out there who started out for good reasons.   THEN....    "Re-elect me as I am the only one who can fix this mess"   Sociopath and Narcissistic.     Those who run for a term or two then decide it is time to leave and return to society are the good ones (speaking of Congress in general).  Those who make their life running for re-election also fit the bill of narcissistic behaviors.   Also those in power who do everything they can "get away with" to stay in power; sociopaths.    Very few in our current legislature are "normal" in that regard.   Just my opinion but thanks for opening the subject up.

re:  Johnson, Ford and Carter.   Johnson was a major manipulator and power player.  He used his presence (height and demeanor) to bully other senators into his way of thinking.   Ford:  Just didn't have enough time to further any agenda he may have had as he only completed Nixon's term but as a senator he was also a power player.  Carter:  He was simply out of his league as a "new comer" to politics on the national scene and truly inept.

And why didn't you put in Obama?  Reports were passed on how upset he was the American populace elected Trump to succeed his presidency.

Granted Trump was not the ideal candidate, nor was Biden.  However both have brought their foibles along with them to the Presidency and I do believe anyone in the future will do so; along with their personality traits.  The only one, in my recall of history, that was actually "forced" into the office and tried to demur from it was Washington. 

Yes I do realize people like to think their agenda is worthy and should be continued but it is politics and agendas are as steady as a fart in a whirlwind (crude but the point stands).  Once you are out of office accept the fact things are going to change in a representative democracy and not always as you believe they should and that is based on being a part of our "great experiment" by voting while having to pinch my nose while doing so.

Ford never served in the Senate. He was first elected to the House in November 1948, and he was re-elected 12 times before he resigned his seat in December 1973 to become vice president.

And Ford's reputation in the House was the exact opposite of what you describe. He was known as a compromiser, a man of strong principles who was willing to consider others' arguments, and try to find middle ground. He was very popular on both sides of the aisle, and virtually everyone liked him.

That's why Nixon chose him after Agnew resigned. He was, in context, the perfect choice, and when his nomination was taken up by Congress, it was confirmed close to unanimously (92-3 in the Senate and  387-35 in the House).

thanks for pointing out my misstatement on Ford's career in congress.  He was in for a considerable period of time and actually told his wife being "vice president" would be a nice way to cap his career.  However he didn't realize what was in store for him as a result of Nixon's issues.   He did recognize one thing (in his favor) and that was to set the Nixon issues on the side line by pardoning Nixon.    His short term as president did have many obstacles to overcome, both on the home front and internationally.  With that said, ex-president Ford was notable for a small piece on 60 minutes for berating one of the secret service men for not picking up his (Ford's) luggage from a hotel.  I well remember the adverse comments about his "behaviors and belittling" those charged with protecting his life.  That was quickly "hushed" in the media. 


On a lighter note: if it wasn't for Ford's "stumbles" SNL's Chevy Chase may have had a different career path!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, keep in mind that on this particular sub-board -- 1408 -- "being gratuitously nasty to each other" is permitted, as long as it doesn't descend to the level of a personal attack.

While I do not personally engage in that type of activity on this board, I appreciate the freedom to be pointed and "uncensored" within that context.
