I didn't know what topic to put this story in, I wanted to put it in What Made My Day, but it was a sport so here we are.  And in the sports category I searched every page for the word Baseball and there are only 3.  One was something about Wayne Gretzky comparing baseball to hockey.  One was "Up goes baseball"- when they first opened this past covid summer, and one was about Pete Rose.  So, I created this topic for random baseball stuff.

So, what made my day in sports today, baseball history was made in Miami.  The first woman general manager.  She grew up in NY and worked with the Yankess and then a number of other teams.    So happy for her and at the age of 51.   Great story to read.   I'm kind of a big Miami baseball fan now, my new 2nd favorite team!

My first baseball glove had Al Kaline's signature. You might have to ask your father who he was... ;D

I don't need to ask.  Everybody in Detroit knows who Al Kaline is.   I even know his number.

I'm still a Minnesota Twins fan... even tho' every time they make the playoffs it's one, two, three...and that's folks.

I owe them...I credit the team with saving my life in 1987. Maybe someday I'll tell that story.

First off, hugs for you for 1987.

Second, I mentioned to Dan that you are a Minnesota fan.  He said to tell you he has all of Kirby Pucketts rookie cards, including the 1984 Fleer Updated.   If that means anything to you.

FACTS ABOUT DiMAGGIO’s 56-GAME HIT-STREAK

Today in 1941 was the last day of Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, the longest in baseball history, which began on May 15, 1941 and ended on July 17. Here are 20 fun facts about the streak.

1. Alan Courtney and Ben Horner wrote the song, "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio" that became a big hit for the Les Brown Orchestra.

2. DiMaggio confided to a teammate that failing to extend the streak 1 more game cost him the $10,000 promised to him by the Heinz Corporation to endorse their Heinz 57 products.

3. DiMaggio, Uniform “Number 5,” hit .408 during the streak (91-for-223), with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs.

4. DiMaggio was voted the American League MVP that season over Boston's Ted Williams who hit .406 -- the last time a major-leaguer hit over .400.

5. The longest hitting streak since DiMaggio established the record was 44 games by the Cincinnati Reds' Pete Rose in 1978.

6. The streak was interrupted by the 1941 All-Star Game at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. DiMaggio was 1-for-4 against the National League.

7. “The Yankee Clipper” homered for his only hit vs. Boston on July 2.

8. DiMaggio never bunted for a hit during the streak.

9. The St. Louis Browns gave up the most of Joltin’ Joe’s hits -- 22 in 12 games.

10. Indians reliever Joe Krakauskas, a native of Quebec, was the last pitcher to yield a hit to DiMaggio during the streak.

11. DiMaggio had a 61-game hit streak with the San Francisco Seals (Pacific Coast League minor league) in 1933, that streak was second-longest in minor-league history to Joe Wilhoit (69 games, 1919). Joseph William Wilhoit was a journey-man MLB outfielder in Major League Baseball, playing mainly as a right fielder from 1916-1919 for the Boston Braves (1916–17), Pittsburgh Pirates (1917), New York Giants (1917–18), and Boston Red Sox (1919). In a four-season career, Wilhoit was a .257 hitter (201-for-782) with three home runs and 73 RBI in 283 games, i

12. The streak almost ended at 35. On June 24 against St. Louis, DiMaggio was hitless when he batted in the seventh inning, and Browns manager Luke Sewell ordered Bob Muncrief to "walk him!" Muncrief refused, Sewell relented and DiMaggio singled.

13. During the streak, he faced four future Hall of Fame pitchers -- Lefty Grove, Hal Newhouser (twice), Bob Feller and Ted Lyons.

14. Who gets credit for the nickname "The Yankee Clipper"? According to DiMaggio's official website, Yankee Stadium announcer Arch McDonald came up with the moniker for the "gracefulness of his play in the field."

15. When the streak began on May 15, the Yanks were 14-14, 5 1/2 games behind Cleveland in fourth place. After Game No. 56 of the streak, the Yankees were 55-27 and first place with a 6-game lead over Cleveland.

16. After extending the streak to 56 on July 16, DiMaggio led the American League in runs (80), hits (124) and RBIs (76), was tied for the lead in HR (20) and was second to Ted Williams in batting (.395 to .375).

17. St. Louis Browns pitching teammates Bob Harris and Elden Auker each gave up five hits during the streak.

18. Although he failed to get a hit in Game 57, DiMaggio did walk to reach base in a streak that would extend to 74 consecutive games (second all-time to Ted Williams mark of 84 games in 1949).

19. DiMaggio got hits in both games of a twin-bill May 30 vs. Boston (Games 15 and 16), but he also committed four errors.

20. DiMaggio got two hits off Cleveland's Bob Feller on June 2. Next day The New York Times reported: "DiMaggio, incidentally, has hit safely in nineteen straight games'' -- believed to be the first printed reference to the streak.

The only thing I recall was some deal with Heinz if he got to 57.  That’s the way I remember it was 56.

My grandmother had a baseball signed by him.  I think one of my uncles has it now.  The signature had gotten faded, ironically because she put it in a sock to keep it from getting faded, but the sock nearly rubbed the signature off as it was moved around in a drawer rather constantly.  I remember pulling it out of the sock to look at once in a while.

Shohei Ohtani.  Lead off hitter for the American League All Star team, starting pitcher for the American League, and participant in the home run derby.
Ya know, I'm pretty sure that if Shohei and I ever met we'd fall madly in love with each other.  And we'd get married and have two kids.  A boy names Shohei, and a daughter named Kate, and we'd live happily ever after.
I told Dan that Shohei is on my list.  He ranks third behind Tommy and Justin.

Is that all I have to do to make it on your list? I'll get on that right away.

Just to clarify... I don't have to win the home run derby, right?

(Toe, thanks for the DiMaggio post)

Sitting watching ABC news.  They just showed a segment on Arizona pitcher Tyler Gilbert.  It was his first major league start and he threw a no-hitter.  He didn't play at all last year because of Covid.  Instead he worked with his dad at his electrical business.

I'm surprised there are no comments/threads about the 2021 playoffs, or does nobody bother watching until the World Series?

I just looked it up, and the average ratings for last year's World Series was  9.7 million viewers.

Last week's Bears-Packers game averaged 14.2 million viewers.

That kinda puts things into perspective.

One reason that there seems to be less interest in baseball is the length of the game. Many games drag on into the three plus hour range.

We used to go to games all the time.  We'd get there 30 minutes early, and games would last 2-1/2 to 3 hours.  I was almost always ready to go after 6th inning.   My brother in law hated taking me and my sister to games.  hahaha.  He'd make us promise we wouldn't complain and would stay for the whole game.  We would promise, but rarely did we stay.  One of the reasons we didn't get invited very often, which was fine.  He'd go to the games, Karen would call me to come over for a evening walk, pool side drinks with a fire, or games, and usually ended up with me sleeping over.

Doesn't an NFL game last three hours though; or is that just the Superbowl?  You could cut the baseball time in half if the adverts were eliminated.  Games televised in the UK have to show UK adverts while the USA ones are on, not a lot of companies want to pay for ads at 1-4 in the morning so the channel mainly advertises itsef, yawn.......

I thought the same thing when I read Watcher's post, and you're right: The average NFL game lasts 3:10 (I just looked it up). And the average length of an MLB game is 3:10.

There's one very significant difference: The NFL season is 16 games, and the MLB season is 162 games.

Interesting the average time of a baseball and American football game are both three hours and ten minutes. American football games do drag on, especially the last two minutes.
