Definitely Elvis. Michael Jackson is great but Elvis will always be the first King.

I don't understand why people think Elvis was the 'king,' he was utterly one dimensional, had trouble with anything but simple lyrics, was fat, a sad human being towards the end of his life and left no discernible musical legacy other than a nasal whine.

I would have to go with The Beatles.  Their music is still listed by many bands and singers as one if their influances.  Their music is still being re-recorded and used in commercials.  That is my opinion anyway.

My top artist varies depending on the mood I'm in, but overall I'd probably go for Genesis (Sits back & waits for the ridicule, lol)

I'm a 50yr old perve in the UK, looking for online fun & possible meetings. I'm into most things apart from other guys & pain :-)

The Rolling Stones.  Still touring.  ;D  But the subject was about "top artist",  so my choice would be between the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra or his side kick, Dean Martin, who I thought had a better voice.

*runs for cover as he is pelted by members who weren't even born when Sinatra, Martin, or even the Stones were big.*

Elvis wasn't always fat [beside the point] and he left an indelible mark on music today. Many experts have said he took country and r&b and made a hybrid out of it, rock 'n roll. Sure, there was some before he came, but he made rock music what it became today. So many artists were influenced by Elvis from different types of music. Elvis had more top 40 hits than anyone else and either the most number one hits or close to that. For over twenty years he have us great music right up until his death and no one will ever surpass his record and no one has come close in thirty-three years.

I get his contribution to music and the birth of Rock & Roll. Hell, John & Paul wanted his job!

Elvis Presley is the best selling solo artist In U.S. History

Elvis had the greatest number of consecutive #1 hits. (10)
The Beatles held twelve positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including the top five positions. Neither feat has been matched by any other artist to date.
Elvis is second to the Beatles in total of #1 hits. (18 for EP and 27 for the Fabs)

According to the RIAA:

Elvis is #2 for overall worldwide album sales - 117.5 million. (To date The Beatles record sales are over 1.3 billion units worldwide)

Okay, please enlighten me, how do you guys go and decide who's the top artist of all time? Isn't it subjective? A poll, or most sold records - does it qualifies as an indicator of someone's artistic genius?

I had this classmate, who used to say hearing Vengaboys, made his life worth. I seriously wanted to choke him, at those moments. But at end of the day it was his opinion.

i've read thru this thread. some excellent choices and arguments. but there really isn't an answer. how do you compare bach or mozart with the beatles or elvis? or miles davis with nirvana? or hank williams with sinatra? or the ramones with justin bieber? there's always an artist or song that speaks to someone a lot deeper than it does to you. and vice versa. very good thread, tho.

btw, my vote goes to pearl jam for bestest, top-est, most favoritest or whatever we're arguing about. ;D
