The Derek Chauvin trial continues today. The state has rested their case and as I type, the defense is calling their first witness.
No doubt they will continue to place the blame on George Floyd for his drug use and poor health.

In interviews by the press with local defense attorneys, many have stated they believe Derek Chauvin should take the stand. Defense has not indicated if they will do so.

Early in the trial, the defense attorney stated he plans to call 30 policemen to testafy supporting Chauvin's actions.

Whatever the outcome, Chauvin has given a new meaning to the phrase, "Taking a knee."

Last night saw some more angry protests around the Brooklyn Center Police Station. This in spite of three metro counties under cerfew. About 40 people were arrested.

The officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright is a 26 year veteran of the police department. Kimberly A. Potter was placed on administrative leave but submitted her resignation today.

Also resigning today was the police chief, Tim Gannon. The Chief held a press conference the day after the shooting saying it was accidental and the officer thought she'd drawn her taser. The case was turned over to the Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension. Many felt the Chief was out of line making his statement as the BCA was in charge of the investigation.

I hope that means 30 pink slips.

Doubt that. As the police union is paying for Chauvin's defense I'd have to guess there's strong support in the department for the  puke.

Someone had to come up with $200,000 cash or other property to secure his bond.

In some reports I’ve seen in the past, officers that report excessive use of force by other officers are thrown to the wolves by the police unions and end up getting fired.

They call it the "Blue Wall".

Several commentators have mentioned this while reporting on the Chauvin trial. Several officers did testify against Chauvin's actions. They were all Sergeants, on up to the Police Chief.

Yes, that's an interesting article. Police not only are given more leeway for their actions, there's the "blue wall", where other officers will not speak against them. As I stated above, the police who have testified against Derek Chauvin were all sergeants and above.

Some of the medical experts who testified for the state stated they did so without payment, which is allowed. Yesterday a "use of force" consultant to police departments testified for the defense, saying Chauvin was justified in using the force he did. This guy got $10,000 for his work. A retired medical examiner testified today and stated the defense was paying him over $300 an hour to review the evidence and testify. This is all being paid for by the Minneapolis Union. No doubt the member are ok with this expense, including the defense attorney's cost. Guess they're thinking they never know when they'll be the next ones needing the same support.

Holy Shit...I'm Charged With Manslaughter
As the trial of one Minnesota disgraced ex-police officer continues, the just resigned officer, Kimberly Potter was charged today with Second Degree Manslaughter. On Sunday she shot and killed Daunte Wright, a 20 year old black man who tried to flee police as they tried to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.

Potter was heard on body cam shouting taser, three times before firing her gun. Wright drove away, only to crash his car after a few blocks where he was found dead. It's speculated Potter thought she had her taser but instead had drawn her service weapon.

Three days of protests, some violent along with looting and burning of stores in the area have occurred. And, we're still sitting on edge, waiting the outcome and fall out from the Chauvin trial.

Manslaughter is the charge an ordinary citizen would be charged with for making such a mistake.  I think it's time to treat law enforcement just like all other US Citizens.  Maybe I'm crazy, but I think all lives matter, and police lives are not worth more that the rest of us.

I am not a fan of the taser. Tasers only work on those not hopped up by drugs/steroids and the mentally ill. When I was a cop, who did I fight? Those hopped up on drugs, steroids and those who were mentally ill. Present day police rely on tasers the way that early 1960's US fighter pilots over relied on missiles. This is why the US military created Top Gun and similar programs. A dog fight in the air it is the same as a fist fight on the ground, if you are trained well enough, this should not be an issue.
With that said, I had 15 years of martial arts training before I became a cop and a lot of the suspects were taller than me and outweighed me. Little did they know I could rag doll most of them. Today's cops don't seem to know how to control a scene and don't know how to fight. Let's take the Michael Brown (Ferguson, Missouri) situation. The cop was 6'1" and 200 pounds. Michael was 6'4" and 300 pounds. I am willing to bet serious money that the cop avoided most fights just because of his size. The first time he got in a real fight, a fight for his life, he went for his gun because he didn't know how to fight someone bigger than him. That boggles my mind. The worst fight of my life, the suspect was a full foot taller and outweighed me by 80 pounds. He was also drunk and hopped up on steroids. After five straight minutes of fighting I managed to body slam and knock the wind out of him, then handcuff him. It was at this point that his three compadres decided to join in. Only then did I pull my gun, but I didn't shoot. The cavalry was on the way and would arrive 30 seconds later. For the cop in the Brown case, his use of the gun was inexcusable, in my opinion.

As of a few minutes ago, both sides in the Derek Chauvin trial have tested. All evidence and testamony has been given.
The jury has been sent home for a long weekend.

Monday, closing arguments will be given. Following that the jury will then be sequestered for their deliberations.

I feel like the city will be holding it's collective breath waiting for the verdict. Thoughts of last year's riots are fresh in our minds. Vacant lots where businesses were destroyed remain as reminders of what was lost.

From a friend of a friend, David Gray:

I need to drive my two-year-old to daycare tomorrow morning. To ensure we arrive alive, we won't take public transit (Oscar Grant). I removed all air fresheners from the vehicle and double-checked my registration status (Daunte Wright), and ensured my license plates were visible (Lt. Caron Nazario). I will be careful to follow all traffic rules (Philando Castille), signal every turn (Sandra Bland), keep the radio volume low (Jordan Davis), and won't stop at a fast food chain for a meal (Rayshard Brooks). I'm too afraid to pray (Rev. Clementa C. Pickney) so I just hope the car won't break down (Corey Jones).

When my wife picks him up at the end of the day, I'll remind her not to dance (Elijah McClain), stop to play in a park (Tamir Rice), patronize the local convenience store for snacks (Trayvon Martin), or walk around the neighborhood (Mike Brown). Once they are home, we won't stand in our backyard (Stephon Clark), eat ice cream on the couch (Botham Jean), or play any video games (Atatiana Jefferson).

After my wife and I tuck him into bed around 7:30pm, neither of us will leave the house to go to Walmart (John Crawford) or to the gym (Tshyrand Oates) or on a jog (Ahmaud Arbery). We won't even walk to see the birds (Christian Cooper). We'll just sit and try not to breathe (George Floyd) and not to sleep (Breonna Taylor).

These are things white people simply do not have to think about.

-David Gray

Tomorrow are the closing arguments in the Derek Chauvin case. As we await the jury's decision, National Guard troops are stationed at various potential trouble spots around town. A few blocks from us, where the local gas station/convenience store was looted and burned and the Walgreens Drug Store across from there, get guardsmen standing by. The Walgreens reopened a couple months ago and the new gas station is under construction and will open soon.

Meanwhile ten miles to the north of Minneapolis, protests continue outside the Brooklyn Center Police Station. After some destruction the first couple days, all protests have been confined to that area.

Our Governor is being pelted from both sides. The right wants more action against protesters. The left wants him to stop the use of tear gas and rubber bullets. I don't envy his job.

Steve Sack, our local political cartoonist has captured the mood of the area in the above piece.

I'm sitting here listening to the state make the closing arguments in the Derek Chauvin trial. Other than feeling the need to witness hoped for justice for George Floyd, it's so painful to continue to relive that fateful night nearly a year ago.

While the trial wraps up and goes to the jury, National Guard troops have joined several other law enforcement agencies standing by in case of another outbreak of rioting, looting and burning. The memories of those black clouds of destruction just two miles from me, finding my local gas station a smoldering ruin still haunt me.

While I hope for justice and reasonable response from the public, I know we're sitting on a powder keg. Already two National Guardsmen were slightly injured In a drive by shooting.

I can only sit here and hope and pray for peace and calmness as this saga comes to a conclusion.

So, will the two National Guard Members who were "slightly injured, when SHOT", receive a Purple Heart Medal for their wounds received in a combat situation? I expect those shot by demonstrators, firing from a vehicle or not, while happy to have survived the demonstration, at least so far, would tell you being shot is not a "slight injury", and the Demonstrators firing at the from a vehicle need to be tracked down, arrested, and spend a long time locked down in Jail, as a consequence of their actions...

Are hundreds of FBI Agents now deployed in Minnesota and other towns and cities who near nightly "host" the rioting mob of Leftist criminals, as we see the TV Commentators tell us are "Mostly Peaceful", while the burning, looted businesses are reflected through the broken glass windows in the background?

The hundreds of arrests, so far, and hundreds to thousands of FBI and other Federal Agents seeking to complete the charges against those who were stupid enough to participate in the January 6, 2021 entry of the U.S. Capitol building, the supposed "insurrection" which was not an armed (no guns confiscated at all inside the Capitol) event, the only shooting done by a Capitol Police Officer, shooting a unarmed demonstrator, who the Government has declined to prosecute, let alone NAME the Officer...

So, no guns, no insurrection, some organized troublemakers, Oath Keepers and ProudBoys, conspired and worked in concert to breach the inadequate security of the Capitol Building, who needed to be brought to justice, and jailed for substantial terms for their physical illegal behavior, fighting with Capitol Police at the entrances, and hallways of the U.S. Capitol that day.

Meanwhile, National Guard Members being shot while on duty, as well as the other mayhem and attacks by uncivil persons, not only in Minnesota, but in all the towns shown nightly during what are purported to be "peaceful demonstrations" that are themselves illegal demonstrations, not scheduled, not controlled at all to prevent participants and the followers who break laws and set fires, so such criminal behavior is observed, if not prevented, and the followup needed to arrest and see through those charged to their earned jail sentences!

It matters not what the Jury decides, having reviewed all the presented evidence in this trial, those seeking to riot, burn, and loot businesses will still be among the criminals breaking any curfew, and raising hell in the streets... and largely excused by all civil and political forces, given a pass by the Media unless they are attacking Media themselves.

As to your question: A reply from a vet:

To earn the Purple Heart you must have been injured in the course of battle with the enemy* and spend at least 48 hours in a military hospital.

*-The enemy to mean the antagonist during a declared war (proclamation of war from the Congress) or an authorization of action, again from the Congress.

Meanwhile US Senator Maxine Waters (D) is asking demonstrators to "Be more confrontational". Talk about pouring gasoline on the fire.  For clarification, the first amendment to the US Constitution grants the right for protesters to "peacefully assemble." Maxine took a vow to protect and defend the Constitution. Perhaps she needs a remedial reading program. Perhaps words like peacefully are too hard for her to comprehend.

Rep. Waters does not care about honoring her Oath, she has long demonstrated. Since no one holds her accountable to honoring the Oath. which she and all Elected Officials take at least following each successful election, has lost any semblance of meaning, for those who have sworn to uphold, etc., seems.

The incitement done by elected Officials, and previously elected, Celebrities of all stripes, and generally those who are supposed to know better, is ignored, especially is ignored by Cable and TV "News", the supposed Fourth Estate, who should be holding the politicians' feet to the fire when they make such foolhardy and dangerous remarks.

Worse, sadly, there is absolutely no repercussion for such trash talking Democrats, as the Constituents who vote them into office, over and over and over again, LIKE remarks as she is famous for making, and seem to enjoy what she says, if not agreeing with her.

The Chauvin trial is now in the hands of the jury. Defense attorney Nelson made a motion for a mistrial after the jury left.

He based his motion on all the publicity the case has received and the jury not sequestered during the proceedings. The judge denied the motion.

Congressperson Waters remarks about protesters need to get
more confrontational if Chauvin is not found guilty, was also mentioned by Nelson. The judge said that could be used as a basis for appeal. He also expressed again how public officials should not be making remarks like that.
