So what's with this reporter asking why stores and restaurants are still allowed to do business?  I get that it'll slow the spread more, but that would cause immediate chaos I think.  Not only would there be more hoarding, but it would be on riot level.

Here in New York City, restaurants and businesses have been closed for almost three weeks. Some restaurants are open for take out and delivery only, but all non-essential businesses are closed down.

And "essential" business are taking severe steps to limit the spread. In my local supermarket, you have to wait in line outside, keeping a 6-foot distance (there are pieces of duct tape on the sidewalk), since only a limited number of people are allowed inside at one time. And they've installed big plexiglass barriers in front of the cash registers, to protect the cashiers.

I've see that at Costco, but all the regular grocery stores dont do anything to restrict people.  I dont go to the store unless absolutely necessary and when I do I where a mask.  Nothing special, just and old bandana I got from one of my MD charity walks.

I just can't handle the Trump pressers.  He reads from the paper and it's like, "OMG, you can't even read".    I don't hate the man like most of you do, but listening to him is like nails on a chalkboard.   And when he repeats something to emphasize his point.

SCREEECHHHHH!!!!!!!!

You’re not old enough to remember that sound.  I am.  And is is almost as agonizing as listening to Trump use a public health crisis as a campaign vehicle.

Over 600 Henry Ford Health workers test positive for COVID-19 (link)

This is one of the main hospital systems in Wayne County (Detroit).   600 front line workers have tested positive.  I'm so sad reading this.

Here's hoping none need to be hospitalized. The only thing stopping our healthcare system from total colapseinto chaos is that not all need to be in a hospital.  However they are saying that once you're hospitalized and are put on a respirator the mortality rate increases dramatically.

We had a police office test positive in my area.  I just said yesterday that if our police force gets infected it'll get scary out there.  Hate to say it, but my pistol is no longer buried, and depending on how this will affect local law enforcement, I may even start to bring it with me wherever I go.

There are 8 in mine, but considering how quickly it spreads and how carefree and careless people are itll be over 100 by next friday, but that's ok, because as long as we only have 200,000 people die from this we're doing great.

They have it broken down by zip codes?  In Chicago, 61% of those who have died due to C-19 were age 60 and over.

The coronavirus outbreak continues to rapidly spread across the U.S., but the pace of infection growth appears to be slowing. According to the Worldometer data tracker, the number of confirmed U.S. cases rose above 367,000. But on Sunday, there were signs of slowing growth with the number of new cases rising 25,316, down from Saturday's increase of 34,196. On Monday, there were 30,331 new cases.

New York state continues to be at the epicenter of the outbreak in the U.S. with more than 130,000 total cases, or about 35% of the country's confirmed total. But even in New York, the number of new cases again slowed on Monday with an increase of about 7,600. On Sunday, New York cases declined for the first time with an increase of 8,200.

Confirmed Covid-19 cases worldwide climbed above 1.3 million with more than 74,000 deaths. But global cases also appear to be slowing with a 5.9% daily gain on Sunday, the smallest increase since March 10.

I remain of the opinion this is fizzling out, they just want to keep saying it's bad to keep handing trillions to Wall Street and rich people.

Remember that this happened with Bush too. Looting the tax payers at the end of his reign. Trump and his friends and the Democrats doing the same here.

Or maybe CJ is just having conspiracy theories.

I've never been much of a worrier.  That all changed in the last 4-5 years since losing loved ones while at the same time adopting my niece, marrying Dan and becoming a family with he and his two daughters.   Loner Jules would have been okay with this stuff.  Family Jules is not.

My biggest concern with this is wiping it out completely.  It's an impossible task.   There will always be someone that is asymptomatic.  They can unknowingly spread it around for 14 days, at which time all those people they come into contact with are spreading it around.   I just don't see how it will ever end.

I predict we will have a couple or three new waves of this for the next 12 to 18 months.  Then they will have a vaccine to market, and only anti-vaxxers who take medical advice from Jenny McCarthy will catch it after that.

Follow the money...

WASHINGTON — President Trump made a rare appearance in the Situation Room on Sunday as his pandemic task force was meeting, determined to talk about the anti-malaria medicine that he has aggressively promoted lately as a treatment for the coronavirus.

Once again, according to a person briefed on the session, the experts warned against overselling a drug yet to be proved a safe remedy, particularly for heart patients. “Yes, the heart stuff,” Mr. Trump acknowledged. Then he headed out to the cameras to promote it anyway. “So what do I know?” he conceded to reporters at his daily briefing. “I’m not a doctor. But I have common sense.”

Day after day, the salesman turned president has encouraged coronavirus patients to try hydroxychloroquine with all of the enthusiasm of a real estate developer. The passing reference he makes to the possible dangers is usually overwhelmed by the full-throated endorsement. “What do you have to lose?” he asked five times on Sunday.

Bolstered by his trade adviser, a television doctor, Larry Ellison of Oracle and Rudolph W. Giuliani, a former New York mayor, Mr. Trump has seized on the drug as a miracle cure for the virus that has killed thousands and paralyzed American life. Along the way, he has prompted an international debate about a drug that many doctors in New York and elsewhere have been trying in desperation even without conclusive scientific studies.

Mr. Trump may ultimately be right, and physicians report anecdotal evidence that has provided hope. But it remains far from certain, and the president’s assertiveness in pressing the case over the advice of advisers like Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease specialist, has driven a wedge inside his coronavirus task force and has raised questions about his motives.

If hydroxychloroquine becomes an accepted treatment, several pharmaceutical companies stand to profit, including shareholders and senior executives with connections to the president. Mr. Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine.

Herd immunity, the question is at what point will we achieve that and from what percentage of those injected versus the percentage of those vaccinated.  I prefer to be one of the vaccinated.

11 confirmed cases in my county, that has no Coronavirus test kits, no public health department, and the nearest ICU hospital is 50 miles away in San Antonio.  No one at the store had face masks today, except the cashiers working behind the counter.

Somerset County ordered 35,000 medical masks. The federal government seized the whole order
By ALEX PARKER-MAGYAR Staff Writer Apr 6, 2020

The federal government seized 35,000 face masks that were to be distributed to Somerset County medical workers, and nobody is quite sure where the shipment has gone.

The Somerset County Office of Emergency Management was expecting the order of N95 masks and surgical masks to arrive Friday. Instead, the vendor called the office that afternoon to inform them that the order had been commandeered.

The county was to distribute the protective equipment to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville, as well as to first responders in county municipalities. Additional masks were to be used at a proposed COVID-19 testing site as yet to be launched by Somerset and Hunterdon counties.

Somerset County Freeholder Director Shanel Robinson said in a phone interview Monday night the county has yet to receive any information from the federal government as to why the bulk order was seized or where the materials have gone. Nor was the county made aware of which federal agency was involved in the seizure.

Robinson said she was “disappointed” in the lack of communication.

“While it’s not uncommon in situations such as this that an executive order can be put out to commandeer equipment, I think that since we’re all in this together there should have been a conversation,” she said. “They could have asked us what we need this bulk order for, or could we share proof of a plan of distribution, instead of just commandeering the order – and then nothing.”

She said the county felt it was making a prudent decision in ordering the materials in bulk to distribute to area first responders and medical workers, but also to use at the proposed testing site.

“In bulk orders you get better pricing,” she said. “We thought we were doing the collective thing and the right thing by doing a bulk order.”

She could not immediately say how much the 35,000 masks cost, but said the county had not paid upfront.

The seizure has state officials and regional representatives looking for answers.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-7, said Monday the congressman is looking into the matter.

The seizure isn’t the first case of the federal government confiscating personal protective equipment, or PPE, from state and local governments during the pandemic.

The federal government seized two bulk orders of medical equipment purchased by Massachusetts in March, and has faced criticism for outbidding individual states on several occasions. The seizures led Massachusetts to skirt the eye of the federal government by having more than one million masks flown in from China on a New England Patriots plane.

Nations, U.S. states and individual hospitals are also seeking to edge each other out in the bidding war for limited medical supplies, with some states proposing a nationwide buying consortium for PPE.

The outright and unexplained seizure of goods, however, has drawn condemnation.

Locally, small towns are finding themselves on the short end of the stick.

In Watchung, a town whose rescue squad is currently in “desperate need” of supplies, a four-gallon order of hand sanitizer was recently diverted to the federal government. Watchung’s first responders would have also stood to benefit from the 35,000 masks seized from Somerset County.

Local towns are already facing months-long backlogs on purchase orders.

“Like many municipalities and counties in the Tri-State Area, we’re trying to get our volunteers, professionals and first responders the PPE they need,” said Watchung Borough Councilwoman Daryl Eisenberg Knegten. “Time and again they’re being diverted without explanation by the federal government.

“New York and New Jersey are by far the hardest hit in the entire country right now. We need these supplies, our county and our borough are buying them, and we’re seeing them ripped away from us when we need them most.”

Freeholder Director Robinson reiterated greater communication and information sharing is needed.

“If the catch phrase of the year is ‘we’re in this together,’ then we truly need to be in this together at every level,” she said. “I think there are some things that can be done differently.”
