There is actually armed security guards patrolling around the warehouse.  They hired them a week before I had started.  This is beyond ridiculous.

Local grocer has a police car permanently parked in front of the store, and uniformed security officers at the entrances and exits. So far, so good. I’m worried that disruptions in production and delivery will ultimately affect the food supply, like everything else. That’s when it is going to get ugly. We have a large garden, and hopefully will be OK. But let’s face it, at the end of the world, and a zombie apocalypse, anything is possible.

A bit of good news.

The first 16 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Linn County, Oregon were reported at a Veteran's home.

The number of cases in the county has more than tripled since then, but of the 16 Veterans who were stricken, 13 have recovered, including a 104-year old WWII vet. All were in the high-risk age group.

One still has symptoms, and two (who were both in failing health to begin with) died.

On a more personal note I was able to buy 10-pounds of flour yesterday for the first time in four weeks.

Still no sign of hand sanitizer for sale at any retail establishment, but two local distilleries have begun producing liquid sanitizer instead of booze. Both have reported having trouble getting the necessary ingredients in bulk, but they're working on it.

Our President recommends everyone wear a mask when being outside but he said he won't.  Which brings up the question:

Do you, or will you, wear a mask if and when you do go outside?  How about wearing gloves when going outside?

I plan on doing neither, unless stores require it as a condition to enter.

If I'm to wear a mask, my choice is to tie a cowboy style bandana over my face. I want to look like I'm going to rob the Wells Fargo stage.

(Yeah, I was raised on cowboy shows in the 1950s) :D

Wifey has had to deal with being called Chinese recently. But she is quick to correct with "Japanese American".

I wasn't planning on bringing this up, but I shared it yesterday with another Board member via PM yesterday, and I figured I might as well share it with everyone.

I tested positive for the coronavirus over two weeks ago. I experienced the equivalent of a relatively mild case of the flu, and it lasted for about 3 days. While I experienced none of the respiratory symptoms, I was feverish, my body ached, especially my joints, and I was exhausted. And I completely lost my sense of taste and smell. After the third day, when I was already beginning to feel better, I went to my doctor to take the test, and three days later I heard back from him that it was positive. The good news is that he believes that my flu-like thing was my reaction to contracting the virus, and nothing else should happen.

In the mean time, even though it's been 14 days since I was symptomatic, and as long as 4 weeks since I contracted the disease, I'm keeping away from everyone. I've gone to the store a couple of times, wearing a mask and gloves, and I've gone for several long walks, steering well clear of anyone else, I haven't gone for a run for a long time, and I really miss it.

The good news is that I have a big pile of books I've been meaning to read, along with about 50 movies and TV shows in my Netflix queue, so I've been keeping busy and entertained. I watched all of "Downton Abbey," and I'm now about 80% through "Orange is the New Black."

What I find a little disturbing is the math. I went to the doctor to be tested on March 20th. My symptoms began on March 17th. If, as the CDC is saying, there is a lapse of 14 days between contracting the virus and symptoms appearing, I was exposed some time around March 3rd. And during the period between March 3rd and March 15th, Was was going about my daily routine. I went to work and came into contact with hundreds of people, I church twice during that period, I went to see a movie on the weekend of the 7th, I went for my regular runs, etc., all the time carrying the virus.

The weirdest thing was losing my senses of taste and smell. It was 100%. At one point I walked around my apartment smelling things -- spices in the spice rack, a bottle of vinegar, a container of Vick's Vaporub, etc. -- and I smelt absolutely nothing. When I ate, I could feel the textures, but there was no taste at all. It's slowly beginning to come back, but it was a very weird sensation. I'm typically not paranoid, but at one point I began worrying that if there was a gas leak, I wouldn't be able to smell it.

The good news is that I now feel 100% back to normal, and I trust my doctor's assurance that I'm done with the disease. I've had a lot of opportunities to spend more time with people via phone calls and Face Time. I virtually watched the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" with my nephews, and it was a fun experience.

I'm not going to nag, but everyone, please be safe. I was, I suppose, lucky to only have relatively mild symptoms, but who knows if, during that in-between period, I exposed someone to the virus who wasn't young(ish) and healthy like me. Sheltering in sucks, but it's vital.

Thanks for sharing with us Miss B. So glad you got through the ordeal ok. Reminding us how easy this virus can attack is a warning we all need to heed. Take care and continue to stay safe. :emot_kiss:

I am grateful you shared this with us. The elderly seem to be the ones that adhere to the warnings and the younger ones don't want to be restricted at all. They ignore that they most likely have an older family member.

While the virus continues to spread, experts warn that the desire to rush a re-opening of the economy is incredibly ill-advised.

Ok, that's fine. Tell this to the people who are losing everything they had just weeks ago. This keeps up and when people need something and they can't afford it they will go and get it. Then the cops will try to stop them, and they will either have to kill or be killed. How long until gangs form and start going door to door to take what they need by any means necessary? If people don't get their jobs and their lives back, let's say before Summer hits, then things are going to get really fucking bad as the heat sets in and tempers increase with the temperatures. Even in my neighborhood, which is what you would consider "spoiled fucks" level, people will lose their grip on sanity when the power goes out especially in the miserable heat of Summer.

This needs to get fixed quickly.  Like Trump or not, he's right about this country not staying shut down. We couldn't make it through one month, how will we make it through what I'm sure will be a harsh Summer? And let's also factor in that apparently farms are not really producing right now, and if they don't then we are in even worse trouble.

This is perhaps an indication that U.S. economy has “skipped recession and has already moved deep into the depression zone,” he added. “American workers have nowhere to hide as the job layoffs are going to go global as world trade collapses.”

Overall, more than 66 million jobs across sales, production, and food preparation services are at “high risk” of layoffs, according to a St. Louis Federal Reserve economist earlier this month.

We are not a 3rd world country. I have zero faith in our curren administration but I think saner minds than what you envision will prevail. A guy today showed me his "survival" guns (5). I asked how many can he shoot at one time? We in Texas call it the redneck syndrome.

Can only drive one vehicle at a time too but many of us have more than one. Could have to do with purpose of each firearm. I bet you are another “proud” firearms owner who has no idea where it is in your closet and can’t remember the last time you shot it.

Chirp-I agree with staci, once the shock of the virus has finished setting in saner minds will prevail. We will make it through this as a country. You are correct that farms are not harvesting (corn, wheat, garbanzo beans, etc.) at the moment but that’s because we are just coming in to growing season. Many of the crops in my area are being planted as weather permits. Weather permitting the crops will be at least average. I don’t think we need to worry about the production side.

I plan on doing neither, unless stores require it as a condition to enter.

I had to fill up with gas Saturday and pick up a few things from Costco. I wore a mask for the first time and I'd estimate that about half the people in the store had masks on, mostly homemade. We have some leftover from the care my mom was given by a local hospice. Not medical grade, looks like a combination of construction paper and gauze with an elastic strap.

The way I look at it, it may not help, but I don't see how it could hurt anything.

Wearing gloves doesn't provide any more protection than sanitizing or thoroughly washing your hands as often as possible.
