It is really hard to tell what the real figures are. I'd heard death rates were about 2%, but since China's reaction to the situation has caused widespread panic and resistance to reporting it's hard to know if figures are accurate.
Officials are going door to door and anyone found with a higher than normal temperature are then seized and carried off, never to be seen again. Hospitals are full, and there are not enough staff to provide basic care for the sick, no doubt leading to additional deaths.
And should an apartment building be belived to be overwhelmed by the virus (lots of sick people found, thus exposure high in the building), the Chinese are welding the doors shut to the entire building to prevent them from breaking quarantine. This is bad because most people do not have food in their homes for an extended stay.
Official Chinese gov't counts say about 30,000 are infected, but NGO's in the area beleive it could be as high as 250,000.
