I started following in the mid/late 90s and decided back then I'd like Newcastle best. In my defense that was at the tail end of the 'Entertainers' era, but I've spent much of the last 20 years hoping the latest defeat wasn't too one-sided
I'm surprised I never told the full story. At least, I couldn't find the post where I might have done that.
Basically, the match that started it all was the Champions League encounter between Newcastle and Barcelona in September of 1997. I didn't know much about either side at the time, other than that Barcelona were expected to win. I think both the fact that NUFC were the underdogs and the way they played is what caught my attention.
There are a few highlights videos floating around, but I picked this one because it's actually from the ESPN coverage I was watching that day.
Luck played a huge role, because Champions League matches were really the only European football that was televised at the time, and if I remember correctly, we'd only get to see one game a week, so if ESPN had decided to air Juventus or Real Madrid that day, things might have turned out different for me
