Following on from the fiascoes at both the last race of the Formula 1 season yesterday and the UEFA Champions League draw today, UEFA have now announced that Max Verstappen will be the winner of the Champions League 2022.  :facepalm:

I'm surprised I never told the full story. At least, I couldn't find the post where I might have done that.

Basically, the match that started it all was the Champions League encounter between Newcastle and Barcelona in September of 1997. I didn't know much about either side at the time, other than that Barcelona were expected to win. I think both the fact that NUFC were the underdogs and the way they played is what caught my attention.


There are a few highlights videos floating around, but I picked this one because it's actually from the ESPN coverage I was watching that day.

Luck played a huge role, because Champions League matches were really the only European football that was televised at the time, and if I remember correctly, we'd only get to see one game a week, so if ESPN had decided to air Juventus or Real Madrid that day, things might have turned out different for me  ;D

Meanwhile, Spanish-language television would show some matches from Argentina at the time. I think it was a really interesting period, when River had players like Aimar, Angel, and Saviola, but there was also the famous Boca side of Carlos Bianchi (with Palermo, Riquelme, Samuel, etc)

Even though I never took to Argentine football the way I loved (and love) English football, I still have a soft spot in my heart, especially for the Boca vs River rivalry.

Of course, the poor guy is also known for getting called up for Argentina for the 1999 Copa America and missing three (!!!) penalties against Colombia, basically ruining his short-lived international career  :'(

I remember when Faustino Asprilla played for Newcastle.  That looked like an outrageous dive to me and i'm surprised that the best international referee that there has ever been, Pierluigi Collini, was conned by it.  ;D

I was at the Chelsea-Spurs game yesterday (sorry MissB - it's happened again ;D).  I found myself sitting in front of the commentary area.  On turning round I noticed that one of the commentators was none other than the well known ex-Chelsea, Blackburn and England international, Graeme Le Saux (or Socks as we used to call him).  He told me that he was commentating/analysing for NBC.  Anybody heard him?

I have, and on several occasions.

He works for NBCSN, which holds the broadcast rights to Premier League matches in the U.S.

In my opinion, former players often make excellent broadcast commentators, since they can draw on their own experience playing the game to provide insights into the match at hand.

Yeah, and this might be kinda side-tracking, but former sports stars returning as commentators happens everywhere, in Cricket as well.
It's a win-win situation for all. As veteran players once again are on air, which is greatly appreciated by their old time fans, while they also offer insight and tell of their own experiences, which allows the younger fans to learn about great matches of the past in a unique ground-level POV.

Chelsea finally woke up from their funk and played like they did the first part of the season. The way the Spurs were playing of late and the lack of scoring by Chelsea, I thought the match would have been a much closer one.
