Thank you, Toe for increasing my level of trauma.
Unfortunately there was a family panic going on while the game was being played that wasn't resolved until the following day. While I was able to watch the game I wasn't able to concentrate on being upset about it. Now I can cry properly.
My take on the game is that it was like the Denmark game in reverse, we either deliberately tried to contain Italy in the second half or they finally woke up and pinned us down so well we couldn't get out of our own half. I don't think we deserved to win overall. With regards to the penalty takers, yes they should be able to score easily and all do so in their respective leagues, however the pressure of a make or break situation in a major final can be unbearable. Remember that Italy missed two and one of them was taken by Jorginho, a supposedly penalty expert, I have to give credit to Pickford for great anticipation though. Subbing Rashford on so late in the game shouldn't have made a difference to his penalty taking abilities; he did score in the shoot out against Colombia at the 2018 WC. I Think it is a different matter for the 18 year old Saka, no matter that he himself has said he was ready and willing and, despite being a Chelsea fan, I feel sorry for the abuse he will no doubt get from the lunatic fringe at away matches for Arsenal next season. Also the Italian goalkeeper is a 6' 7" giant, only the corners or sending him the wrong way will get past him. Saka and Sancho placed their kicks far too conveniently for him.
Once again the match was spoilt for me by the boorish behaviour of the fans when the eyes of Europe (and some of the rest of the world) were upon them. I read today that our bid to be the European favourite to bid to be hosts for WC 2030 is in jeopardy because of the attempts (and with some success) by ticketless "fans" to get into Wembley. More
