And for the first time in history Spurs are top and Arsenal bottom simultaneously.

And I'm not sure which makes me happier...

I read today that Ronaldo shirt sales from when he resigned for Man U is worth 190million.

That's insane

With his first game as a ManU player in many years, he may have slowed a step but his goal scoring hasn't. Two goals!

Chelsea looks good also.

He's a model professional. I really hope his attitude rubs off on players like Lingard, Martial and Pogba

What do people think of FiFA's suggestion of a World Cup every two years interleaved with each Confederation's competitions in every odd year?  This is being championed by Arsene Wenger who claims that his proposed qualifyling schedules would mean fewer games being played and less travelling being done and therefore reduced stress on players.  I'm all for reducing the number of games played but don't like the idea of removing the "specialness" of  a World Cup once every four years.  It would also mean coinciding with the Olympics every four years.

I think I read that Europe, as of now, is for the change but the rest of the world isn't. Most players probably would like to play less games but my opinion on having the World Cup every two years is about bringing in more money. No bigger stage than the World Cup.

I think it's the other way round Watcher. The head of UEFA has decried it, but the smaller footballing (soccering??) nations see it as a way of increasing their chances of participation in the finals.  Financial reasons are hiding in there somewhere. I once read that the true cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. This is certainly true of soccer administrators.

I think it will never, ever happen. Just like that European Super League didn't happen.

And I think the main reason is as you put it: The World Cup is the nec plus ultra of World Football, and from what I've read, the confederations, national associations, national leagues, managers, and players are overwhelmingly against it. And the clear majority of fans are against it as well.

In my opinion, the expansion from 32 to 48 teams in 2026 represented a belittlement of the game, and this would be incomaprably worse than that. Watcher's right: FIFA is following the more matches = more money theory (as did the Super League).

It won't fly, and it will go away.

Thanks, MissB, I had forgotten about that particular piece of cynicism

The same with the Club World Cup which FIFA wants to increase to a humongous 24 teams.

I don't know what is worse for a player?  Playing multiple games a week or travelling across time zones to play games if they are fortunate enough to play for their country's national team.  Having a World Cup every two years will just add more travelling to players hectic schedules.

It's worse than that, since over a year before the World Cup, the national sides play in Confederation qualification tournaments, which fall during
"international breaks" during the regular club seasons.

I didn't read Wenger's plan in detail, but in typical times, the World Cup and Confederation tournaments (Euros, Copa America, Africa Cup of Nations, Gold Cup, etc.) rotate every two years -- and those confederation tournaments also include a series of qualifying matches. The confederations will never give up those tournaments, if only because they're cash cows (especially the Euros).

I agree with ODK that reducing the number of teams in the top flight leagues from 20 to 18 teams will reduce schedule crowding (the Bundesliga has only 18 teams), but to do so in order to double the number of World Cups is not the answer.

More matches = more money works for the Lords of FIFA, but not for the sport itself. In the expanded 2026 World Cup, we will see lower-ranked teams taking on giants in the Group Stages matches (e.g. Brazil beating Vietnam 12-1, or Germany defeating New Zealand 11-0), and that's not good for anyone.

Agree. Lately, the groupings seem to have one strong team or nation and the rest not so strong teams or small nations. Why bother, other than giving those small nations their "fifteen minutes of fame".

RIP Jimmy Greaves  :(

What a legend. Fitting that Spurs are playing Chelsea today.

Very good first half in the Chelsea - Spurs match but Chelsea dominated the second half. Why is Werner still playing for Chelsea? Lukaku has to be frustrated that his passes to him in the 6 yd box resulted in no goals.

The day I thought I'd never see.. Mike Cashley finally agreed to sell Newcastle United, and that to new owners who could potentially invest insane amounts of money in the team.  8)

Of course, there is a major downside, the shitty human rights record of the new owners.  :'(

Unfortunately that is what takes to have a good club, an insane amount of money. Which will just up the cost for all the other clubs.
