Today I learned that...

https://www.britannica.com/story/why-do-some-people-call-football-soccer

When I was young (and Adam was a lad) the term soccer always seemed more effete than football. Real players never used it.  Interesting article, Toe, Wikipedia also points out the tendency for UK slang to add 'er' to the end of words and rugby is also called rugger.

Linguistically creative students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of “rugger” (rugby football) and “assoccer” (association football). The latter term was further shortened to “soccer” (sometimes spelled “socker”), and the name quickly spread beyond the campus. However, “soccer” never became much more than a nickname in Great Britain. By the 20th century, rugby football was more commonly called rugby, while association football had earned the right to be known as just plain football.

So it is really Assoccer.  Got it.

But to us that should be arsesoccer; usually played by Arsenal.  ;D

I read a book ages ago that discussed how rugby and soccer developed into separate sports, as well as how American football developed from American universities wanting to play rugby rather than soccer. It's kind of fun to think about how different American sports might be if they had gone with soccer instead, including whether there'd be a new sport now like 'American soccer' ..which still might be called 'American football'  ;D

Italy squeaked past Spain, thanks to Spain's poor record on penalty kicks.  Will England use home field advantage to defeat Denmark?  Hope the match is exciting.

Hi Watcher.

It was for English fans. Overall I think we deserved it. A soft penalty that I would have been annoyed about it had it been given against England but Denmark were tired and obviously playing for a draw and the penalty shoot out. I wouldn't have been confident of a penalty shoot out win with Schmeichal on such good form.

Italy will be a much tougher game.

Thank you Toe, CT and Obi.

Good stop by the Danish keeper but heads up play by Kane.  Walker and Sterling still were fast after 110 plus minutes.

Rumor has it that ManCity cannot afford a striker like Kane so now ManU is in the running....

England and Spain need to have a refresher course for their players on how to kick penalty kicks.  Don't try to be fancy. Blast the ball in the upper or lower corners. These players are pros.

I knew as soon as I saw it would go to penalties that Italy would likely win. Maybe it's become a bit of a cliche, but England has a poor history when it comes to shootouts, and you'd think it's something Southgate & Co would've given more attention.

Just in the European Championship alone..

WON against Spain in the Euro 96 quarter final
LOST against Germany in the Euro 96 semi final
LOST against Portugal in the Euro 04 quarter final
LOST against Italy in the Euro 12 quarter final
LOST against Italy in the Euro 20 final

Then out of four shootouts in the World Cup, England have lost three of four.
