My deceased wife spent nearly 3 years applying for SS disability.  It’s a nonsensical humiliating process that has nothing to do with determining who is eligible and deserving and everything to do with making the process as discouraging as possible to get you to give up.  The sad thing is the abusers of the system persevere and get benefits in record time, while many that truely deserve these benefits just give up.

I went with my wife to her disability hearing.  She was the only one unable to walk and in a wheelchair.  The vast majority of the disability applicants seemed to fall into the category of, ‘I’m way too fat and lazy to work.’  Sorry if that seemes callous and I understand these people had real health issues, but I’ll say it again, not taking care of yourself to the point of being unable to work is a whole lot different than my deceased wife who had congenital back issues and multiple surgeries forcing her into a wheelchair, at about 115 pounds.

Jed, I’m a member of the National Orgsnization of Social Security Claimsnts Representatives (NOSSCR), and I handle disability claims.  Most people get denied on their initial application.  Most people who appeal, with legal counsel, get approved.  You have to frame the claim properly, and have people with letters after their name say the “magic words.”  Most people who represent themselves have no inkling about what the regulatory definition of disability is.  So they present their case wrong, and get denied.

Again, if your wife was denied benefits, I understand your anger with the system.  But that doesn’t mean the “vast majority” of applicants are “way too fat and lazy to work.”

I know this is random rants.  But rant against the bureaucracy, not against the other disabled individuals who got benefits.  And no one “gets benefits in record time.”  It just doesn’t work that way.

I really can’t get mad about hungry people getting food stamps.  I can’t get angry about people buying soda with food stamps.  I can’t get angry about someone who has a phone, or a car, getting food stamps.  They all went through the same humiliating application process as your friend.  Get mad if her food stamp benefits are denied.  But chances are, everyone you see with a food stamp card has a story you know nothing about.  Just like the people giving you dirty looks know nothing about your story.

I doubt it was as hard for them. You don't toss steaks into a cart and a case of Coke and be grateful for food stamps.
