Anthony Bourdain Dead at 61

CNN's Anthony Bourdain  died this morning at age 61.
The celebrity chef and CNN's host of Parts Unknown was found unresponsive in his hotel room.

RIP Anthony, yours was one of the few shows I actually watched and really likes.

He had great prose, and delivery (In voiceover.)  He lived a fuller life than the vast majority, and brought something sorely needed at CNN.  They lost one of his greatest ambassadors, and I'm going to miss his bromance with Anderson Cooper.

I saw this a couple hours ago and was just stunned into inactivity for a bit.  I’ve read his books and have his Les Halles cookbook.  I never met him but feel like I lost a friend.

I am heartbroken.  I cried when I heard this.

I have followed him for more than a decade, bought his books, attended his lectures.  He was my hero, my idol, my man crush.

I’m still having trouble proessing this, and the continuing news articles and segments on TV are not helping.  While being fully cognizant this is not about me and is about his loved ones, how can someone whose life I so envied, someone I really wanted to be, do that to themselves?

I watched his latest episode of Parts Unknown last night, which was filmed in Berlin.  Because Tony was my hero, a man I truly idolized, his death is not “just another celebrity” for me.  With him, some of my hopes and dreams died also.  The world is a scarier place, without him.

I cried. Seriously, I did. In a world of extreme political views, he was not afraid to tell the story the way he saw it. He didn’t seem to give a crap about what a network editor would say about his story. He talked to the street level people and told their story regardless of the political position of the country he was in.

And you have to respect a person who had no fear. He would put anything into his mouth and say it was delicious. Through Parts Unknown and his previous show, No Reservations, I never once saw him say that what ever he was eating wasn’t delicious.
