The law dictates a maximum 20 day period that their children may be detained with the adult alien awaiting asylum disposition.

There are, of course, far more humane ways to treat people seeking asylum than locking them up in prison. Especially when this practice of mass incarceration, coupled with a system that doesn't give a shit about these people's well-being, results in innocent children being housed in abandoned Walmarts turned into children's prisons.

I really would love to understand, Joan, why you don't feel that we should treat these people (and especially the children) humanely.

It is the law. We are a nation of laws. Should the Administration break the law and keep the minor aliens with the adults longer than Judge Gee detailed?

Catch and Release is over, hopefully. Aliens applying for asylum, some have travelled up to 2000 miles, and paid a lot of money to criminal smugglers to get here, understand they will be detained until vetted, processed, decided to bring children along, stood in the long lines awaiting this process, and should have made other plan, if they object.

Provided the alien has not broken any law, lied on applications, etc., each may decide to be deported, and begin their lives anew in Mexico perhaps, for the asking, while still as a family unit. It is up to the 'no visa alien', really.
-------------
For those triggered by non-stop CNN, MSNBC, and other leftist media focus on the Border, do not fret. The FBI IG hearings are over, or close, and it will be safe for such 'news' outlets to again focus on Stormy, or Comey, or some other topic to trash President Trump.  Meanwhile, try C-SPAN.

In a recent tweet about this fake immigration "crisis," Trump referred to it as an "infestation," language clearly intended to dehumanize.

"Infestation" is a word that we use to refer to animals, to vermin--rats or termites. The proper response to an infestation, is extermination.

This is exactly how the Nazis talked about the Jews.

Somehow, the previous administration was able to abide by Judge Gee's ruling without putting innocent children in prison. Maybe there's a model there that we could follow?

If it were up to Joan and her fellow fascists, they would be shot by the einsatzkommando.

The NAZIs were just following the law, too.  It was an unjust law.

In this case it is not the law, but how Trump has decided to implement it.

A number of the Border Patrol have resigned in protest of this new policy.  I salute these brave few.

After separating and warehousing over 25,000 alien children, President Obama decided to ignore the law, and received excellent press coverage before and after his decision to ignore the law. You may recall he distributed the less than fully vetted 'children', some with mustaches, estimated at near 40 years old, deep into the Interior, where they burdened unsuspecting local public elementary and high schools. Many remain to this day, others have vanished without a trace, few if any have been given full asylum, or deported. Your taxes support many of them, and will support the remaining 8,000 to 10,000 of Obama detainees awaiting disposition, with more on the way.

See a earlier post about minor aliens being abused by criminals, for more info on this subject. Ignoring the law, selective enforcement, was a hallmark of the past Administration, seems. One reason President Trump was elected with the overwhelming vote in most States (see U.S. Electoral Map by Counties), and enforcing the law is what is happening today.

Congress should act to change the law, and find a suitable way to insure the compliance of the aliens with Immigration Hearings in the process. A system that actually results in legal asylum, or deportation, as the cases are decided.
Detention as family units could be written into new legislation, in a manner so as to avoid another Court challenge to strike it down.

United States parents who put children through what these alien children have been put through would be charged with abuse, above and beyond the state of rescue the children receive once detained at the border, or by HHS. Once the DNA results are available, it will be clear who is and who is not a family, and by that time, perhaps Congress can find the will to act together for these kids.

Yes, Obama decided to [insert politically-laden verb of your choice here] the law.

President Obama chose humanity and basic human decency over draconian punishment and cruelty. By doing so, he very much earned the "excellent press coverage" that he received.

And, as I've become more and more inclined to do of late, I'll let Pope Francis weigh in here:

"A person’s dignity does not depend on them being a citizen, a migrant, or a refugee. Saving the life of someone fleeing war or poverty is an act of humanity."

The Trump regime is delighted by all the outrage.  They believe it plays to their base and they are digging in.

Deterrent? Clearly it is having no effect on people seeking asylum because asylum seekers are desperate.

The Trump regime is separating children from their parents because it is an authoritarian tactic.  Trump wants people to stand up and notice when he speaks like the people of North Korea (have to) stand up and listen when Kim Jong Un speaks.  But as Trump's outrageous behavior becomes "normalized" he has to behave even more outrageous and cruel to get the attention he craves.

For those that support an authoritarian with cruel and inhumane policies, what does that make you?

I could be wrong, but it's my impression that Trump is doing it on purpose, deliberately stirring up outrage to garner support for "his" immigration reform package.

Yes indeed, MissB. But then, as Lois said, Trump wants the same kind of recognition and adulation that his heroes receive. And who are his heroes? Why dictators, authoritarian leader, the very people we as Americans have supposedly long despised.

We are witnessing the same kind of actions that predates the demise of the Weimar Republic in 1934.

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

It’s a dual bone being thrown to his bigoted base.  It’s not only about their anti-immigration beliefs, there’s the racist component of it being an infestation of brown people.

President Trump has signed today an Executive Order that detains families together who have approached a designated Port of Entry, requesting asylum, prior to their deportation in cases where asylum is found not to be merited, as well as for asylum seekers found worthy after review.

Nice now that we can all get along, and am sure he will have full support...

I hope that parents and children can be matched up properly.  This tragedy never had to happen.

I hope so as well, and the DNA results may come in handy in that regard. The Department of Justice will challenge the Judge Dee order as part of this action and Congress action to change the current law remains pending.

So many folks agree, that after sixteen years, no one would block legislation to fix the law, correct? Hopefully all of us at KB feel the same about that, and will encourage our Representatives/Senators (if we have such) to vote for change.

Spin all you want, Joan. The fact remains that the Trump administration is cruel, vindictive, has less humanity or compassion than any other. Add to that their ridiculous insistence on ignoring reality and always being right, regardless of the facts makes them one of the least effective and most divisive administration in our history.

Was just trying to express pleasure that the issue has been settled. Families now will be kept together, as so many here endorse. Seems the President took the advice of most here, issued the Executive Order, and is making it happen.

Thought you would be pleased, happy, and feel satisfied now, supportive of a permanent change to the law so no families will be split up due to 9th circuit.
