We only had a few inches of rain and some gusty wind here in the Texas Hill Country.  I feel terrible for everyone south and east of me, particularly Rockport, Victoria, and Houston.

Driving home with the radio on yesterday - in each hourly news bulletin the number of people rescued from their homes by boat rose by a thousand.

The UK news this morning is full of shots of people boating around Houston, or pickups floating down the streets of Houston, but Houston has not been the worst-hit area, the heaviest rain is falling / will fall further west:

There's a lot more water yet to arrive, and it will be quite some time before what arrives can leave.

Long-term, I'd be concerned about the water supply - I believe most of the Texan water comes from groundwater, but now that is going to be contaminated with seawater, sewage, and the contents of any flooded industrial site, from small engineering workshops and fuel stations, to whatever toxic chemical plants are overwhelmed.

Stay safe, guys.

The pictures and video I've seen are heart rending.  I'm glad to hear that our Texan KBers are all ok.  It's hard to understand why so many people didn't evacuate.  There was a lot of notice given that this would be a bad one.  Then again, I wonder, "Where would they go."  As usual it's the poor and elderly that get left behind.  I was shocked to see several elderly women in a nursing home sitting in water up to their waists!  The photo did get them airlifted out.

With forecasts of more water still on the way, take care my friends.

Seems the local politicians feel, still, the political risk of Evacuation is too great for them to have endorsed such a reasonable suggestion much less an order of evacuation.  Certainly low lying areas should have been forcefully evacuated, to include the Nursing Home you mentioned.

A past storm, Hurricane Rita, whenever that was, included a chaotic evacuation that included an accident, where a bus filled with Nursing Home Patients caught fire, killing a number of them, in the middle of the massive traffic, and for that reason, local politicians are loathe to suggest evacuation.

Has little to do with the wisdom of a well planned emergency response, taking the actions early enough to accomplish a valid goal, but with #RESIST, bull headed thinking by the Major, and those who are elected officials in Houston and surrounding area.

Governor Abbot took care to advise any who would listen to head to higher ground, regardless of the advice of local officials, Evacuate, Save Yourselves, was his message for all in the path of Hurricane Harvey.

The Mayor and his ilk 'bet' on 'stay at home, and hope'. We shall see how the results bear out the wisdom of each message.

Save your fucking Brietbart shit for 1408. Your comments insult every person in Texas who suffers. This is not a political issue. It is a human tragedy, and I am frankly tired as hell of your compulsive necessity to turn everything into some kind of alt-right political commentary.  Go dance with a Confederate statue, and leave the people of Texas alone.

It actually looks more like this:

I'm over closer to San Antonio.  We only got a few inches.  I have family in Houston and Beaumont and they'd had several feet of rain, with more on the way.

Of course there is not a thing political about Houston's situation, nothing at all.

That is what is being reported on MSM, and if anything they are all heroic ,and are handling, have handled, everything just perfectly, were and are prepared, and not a soul could have done any better, no one at all. Houston is perfect, and a victim of an Act of God that could not have been avoided. Right...

"At this time I can reemphasize there will be no mass evacuations called," said Harris County Judge Edward Emmett (GOP), who is responsible for overseeing emergency operations, at a joint press conference with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (Dem) on Friday.  It was the Republucan County Judge's call to make.  That is why Governor Abbott soft pedaled it while giving Trump a blow job.

And while we are on the subject of "a heck of a job Brownie," the disaster declaration covers 50 Texas counties and 7,000,000 people.  So far FEMA has moved 96,000 liters of water, 306,000 meals, and 4,500 tarps into the affected areas.  Pretty underwhelming.  They aren't "all over it".  They are doing something, which really isn't much of anything.

Donate to the Red Cross.  Light a candle.  But don't make this a political issue.  Because it isn't.

Another post from anyone with political slant to it in this thread will result in the thread being moved.

Knock it off!

This is like Hurricane Katrina, but the Texas version. They are saying it will be months until some can get back to their homes.
