"Breaking Bad" (about the 4th or 5th time).

When we finished watching "Better Call Saul" the prequel to "Breaking Bad" we thought it would be cool to watch the prequel first, then "Breaking Bad".

These are a couple of the better anti-hero shows I've ever watched. Top it off with the El Camino movie and that wraps up the saga nicely with a bow on top.

I'm struggling to get through "Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches".

For some reason the delectably blue-eyed Alexandra Daddario reprises her comedic performance in the otherwise appalling rom-com "Can You Keep a Secret?"

The hand-wringing, the nervous tics, the croaking voice, and the excessive alcohol consumption are not what I associate with a brilliant neurosurgeon, her part in the series. And she keeps her top on during the sex scenes.

"When you’ve got it, flaunt it! Flaunt it!" (Max Bialystock)

She did flaunt it in "True Detective", so perhaps in "Mayfair Witches" she's supposed to be portraying shy reticence—despite a proclivity for impulsive one-night stands. All very odd.

There's another odd thing about this series. From Episode 2 onwards, each episode begins with a flashback to what is supposed to be 17th century Scotland. The characters' accents are all over the place, as if the director told them to go with whatever they thought authentic, "Because the audience won't know the difference."

Very strange and very disappointing.

Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen

Another must see when available. One of the best, if not the best, car chase scenes filmed.

Director Yates called for speeds of about 75 to 80 miles per hour, but the cars (including those with the cameras) reached speeds of over 110 miles per hour. Filming of the chase scene took three weeks, resulting in nine minutes and forty-two seconds of footage. They were denied permission to film on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bullitt’s reverse burnout during the chase scene actually wasn’t in the script; McQueen had mistakenly missed the turn. The footage was still kept, though.

I finished The Popes Exorcist yesterday. I had a feeling that it would be to much like the exorcist but it was not. I thought it was really good. And based on a book written by the real main Exorcist.

A car going 55 mph covers 170 feet per second (on a dry street). Consider then, the choreography of a miles long chase scene in a movie and how many jump edits and takes that happened. I haven't seen the movie, but I did have a certification as accident investigator for the police departments I worked for. Two cases stood out (and I loved the first one because of the math involved):

1. Car going at least 58 mph in a heavily suburban area where the speed limit was 30 mph. Anyway, he was going 58 when he hit the brakes and 34 mph when he hit the fence 100 feet later (hitting two cars parked inside the fence).

2. Car with intoxicated driver rear ends a police unit and a slow speed chase ensues during which he sideswipes one car and hits two more before he is stopped 1 1/2 miles later (cars and wreckage strewn over the length of the chase).

Let's Do It (1982).

Freddy, a freshman at UCLA, has been given a deadline by his girlfriend: "Have sex with me by next week, or it's over." Thing is, Freddy has all kinds of anxiety about his performance, so, he has sex with a streetwalker, her roommate, a sex therapist and the best friend of his girlfriend before he finally has sex with his girlfriend. The actor playing Freddy was chosen on his looks alone, he can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. This is an early 80's T & A flick and pubic hair is also often seen (40 years ago, women had full shag carpets between their legs-I like to eat pussy and I prefer a clean plate to work with, but I digress). If I had seen this movie 40 years ago (on VHS), I would have worn out the tape as well as my right arm.

Acting: One half star out of five.

Nudity: Five out of five stars.

Technically, the Georgia-Texas game.  Well, the Georgia game.  Texas didn't really have game.  They were probably due for a bad outing.

For the topic title, it was the season premiere of Blue Bloods.

Shutter Island

I think Martin Scorsese should stick to doing Mafia films. This was painful to watch. Formulatic. And very predictable. Sort of like Inception recast in an insane asylum.

But I’m sure I will have some whacked out dreams tonight.

I never watched the movie, but I read the novel on which it is based. When I got to the "shocking surprise" at the end, I felt like flinging the book out the window. It was completely contrived, and not at all socking.

Woman of the Hour, starring Anna Kendrick. Playing on Netflix.  Based on a true story of a woman who appeared on the television program, The Dating Game, and chose a bachelor who turned out to be a serial murderer. The movie illustrates the lackadaisical attitude of police in the late 1970s when girls would disappear, even when witnesses came forward.

Does anime count?

I never asked.

But last night a first episode of what I see as to be a great anime this season came out. Ao no Miburo, or "The Wolves of Mibu" It is a story set in the Meji period, 1863, towards the twilight of the Shogunate. It centers around a group of Ronin who were left in a village, and bad rumors spread around them, but the main character is an odd boy, born with pure white hair and shockingly blue eyes, an orphan working at a restaurant for an old lady, when two very handsome men, probably Samurai enter, eat, and keep coming back. Then one night, the two samurai were enjoying tea after their meal at the restaurant and it was time for the boy and his "sister" who was younger to go home. Rumors were hot about kidnappings of young children were all around. The boy walks with the girl Iroha and the boy who is almost unnaturally perceptive notices a figure in the shadows, so he hurries the girl up, which is hard to run in Kimono's or Yukata's. The boy snuffs out the lantern he was carrying, because this is feudal Japan, Kyoto, and there are no street lights, to hide in an alley, but to his dismay, the moon is full and bright, giving no shadow to hide in. So they become surrounded and the boy tries to protect the girl, gets kicked around and knocked to the ground.

The two samurai show up, and kick ass. And when the dark haired samurai was about to cut down a kidnapper who drawn a sword, as the rule and almost law was that if you draw steel, you must be ready to die by it, the boy, Nio, stops him by saying the man was not acting like he was going to use the sword seriously. The samurai learn where the kidnapped kids are, and though you do not see them rescue the kids, it is mentioned the next day.

Up to this point it was an interesting take on the street level life of the first capital of Japan. But after making an offer to the boy, the boy's reaction was what sealed this show to me as genuinely good. The boy starts crying, and then gives a speech about children being the first to be sacrificed in the world as weak and easy pawns for the unjust and cruel unfairness of the world they know. But the climax of his speech was him lamenting his own weakness and powerlessness in the fact that he could not protect his "sister." The reactions of the room was deep.

Normally anime would gloss this over, or break the tension with a gag or something to divert the mood. No. There was no bullshit upskirt shot, nor clumsy goofy person to break this heartbreaking scene. Just a boy who ate the entire apple of knowledge, no more innocent days. He ate an entire bowl of self loathing and bitterness and had to grow to survive it. But what happened next made me and the wife cry for this boy. The dark haired samurai who looked mean and vicious, got on his knees and hugged the boy. Not just as an adult trying to soothe a child, but what I felt was a man who is watching a boy sadly trudge the same path as he had, and it is very bitter. But even after accusing the pair of using them as bait (which the samurai did) the boy chose to take them up on their offer to work for them, and train with them to get stronger.

I am not well versed in the lives of the people of Feudal Japan, but it seems to be similar as almost anywhere else in the world. It was a harsh look at it, and I believe the boy's speech hit it spot on.

Not many anime shows or movies hit with gut punches to the heart like this, but I found it refreshing.

So if you find yourself interested, it might be on Crunchyroll, or on some less than legit places. It is worth the watch, but it also might offend with the male centered narrative. But it can be forgiven, because it is a period piece and honestly the only women to carry weapons were either the imperial Kuonichi's (female ninjas) or bandits. But It is still worth the watch.

I was just describing the animated, versus the live action, versions of Space Battleship Yamato to an associate. I thoroughly enjoyed both versions, but in different ways.

I was just describing the animated, versus the live action, versions of Space Battleship Yamato to an associate. I thoroughly enjoyed both versions, but in different ways.

A good show. But there are perils with making a show live action from an anime. I cite the live action Cowboy Bebop as an example as what not to do, the main point is to drift from the source material. But there are good examples, like City Hunters, that manage to capture the source and translate it to live action. But with the Bleach live action, it fell flat, with ending on the low point of the first season, but the thing is, that Ichigo died after dude fucked him up, which lead to the rescue arc/season. He technically did not lose his powers, he was straight up killed, and then Urahara trained him to awaken his own powers.

But then you get shows like One Piece, or Mob Psycho 100, which translated well into live action. Even the live action "My Love Story" was decent if not good. Though I was hoping to see him jump from the fifth floor of the building holding his girlfriends friends as they were trapped in the fire, that scene was powerful. Also the live action Ruroni Kenshin movies were great. like they were trying to make a live action Neon Genesis Evangilion, which to be honest would not transfer well if they stuck to the original story, because of too many "mind fuck" twists and turns in the story. Now an anime I would like to see made live action is Aldnoah Zero. It hits with the vibes of stories like "The Princess of Mars" or a interstellar take on "Les Miserables" but with giant robots and Earth being on the weak end. In the anime the Martians nuked New Orleans with their landing craft.

They also did live action Initial D, which was a good street racing/drifting story. Even GTO had a live action show iirc. The Crows saga got a live action movie series.

Now to lay out my point:

Take one of my favorite guilty pleasure anime, High School DxD or Dragon and dragon.

It is firmly in the Harem and Ecchi world.

Then beyond the abundant fanservice, is the supernatural story, of a pervert, who finally got a date with a beautiful girl, who turns out to be a fallen angel, after the boy's life because he possesses a spiritual relic "boosted gear." So she stabbed him in the stomach right after revealing that she was a fallen angel after his life. He lies there dying, and makes a wish to see the school's mysterious red haired beauty, who turns out to be the daughter of one the four great families in hell. So she saves him by making him her "pawn" as the demons use chess to battle each other.

It would not translate to live action well as the level of lewd is a mite too high to act out.

Not because of the fight scenes, but because of the lewd.

and its not even classified as porn, mostly because there is no actual sex.

So the debate of live action vs anime is valid, and I too liked Space Battleship Yamato. When I was younger, in elementary and middle school, I had a friend who was from Japan, who got anime monthly from her cousins, and me and gf would spend afternoons at her house watching it, despite most of it being "Shojo" or Girls anime.
