I’m a global moderator, and administrator of the site. Our chat room has not been active for many years. We share the chat board with a sister site called Ravishment University. If you look through the old threads, it will tell you how to login there. But there will not be anyone in the chat room.

I think it’s just that the Internet has aged. There are so many other ways to instant message now.

Most of the people that go to the effort to get inside the chat room are horn dogs looking for sexual opportunities. Our board does not particularly have a reputation for granting those. We’re sort of a family, and we have known each other a very long time.  Private communications are used in the message board. But not the chat room.

You need five posts to get private message permission. You need post 50 times to use the chat room.

We once had a member named “Hugo” who wanted to get in chat so bad, he posted 50 times in one day.  Of course he was very disappointed when he got his acorn, and was never heard from again. Don’t be a Hugo.

Let me know if you have any questions.

That is not exactly true PH, I have a client sitting there nearly 24/7, and when I am at my computer I sometimes chat. A few others visit from time to time also, so our chat is not quite dead, just usually very quiet. I am a chat op on that channel to help out with potential issues should they occur.

The instructions for getting into our chat is out in the open and if you don't try to use the web link to chat but instead a more competent client (especially for mobile/phone browsers the link we have is very bad you can't actually see who is online on mobile, you can if you switch to desktop mode though) you will most of the time see VelaZzz (me not being at computer) and maybe a few others.

Are there KB members in chat? My impression was they are all RU users.

I saw that Ghost80 popped in for a few seconds, and often I see some people pop in, usually from mobile would be my guess, and they then see no names, since mobile is broken, and then leave, same for RU users, sometimes some people stay around long enough for me to actually be there and say hi and sometimes we talk a bit.

Mostly I think that a lot of people use mobile browsers, and the html client is partially broken on mobile (does not show user list) and thus people think nobody is there and leave, rather than give enough time for anyone to say anything, and also irc does not preserve chat log on the web/http client, so it is not possible to close the tab and open it again and see what happened while one was gone, so that also makes people think nobody is there and there is no chat.

I can't quite quantify how many people from KB vs RU are there, since I am on both sites I think I count for both, and the admin of the irc channel is from RU (but also member here (Eljorn)). So that means what two people who semi frequent there who are on both sites.

Again I think if the web client on mobile would like it does on desktop, show the user list, then people may understand that there are people there and stay long enough to chat with :)

I see names from KB and RU show up, say nothing, and then leave immediately all the time though.

Is Ghost80 on RU, because he is a newbie here. I did not set up the chat, but the chat thread says 50 posts mininum.

Last I checked that 50 post limit was removed, also there are instructions that can be read by guests for how to get to the chat with irc client, I don't know when that happened though or if it was KB or RU, Ghost80 is not currently on RU no :) at least not with that name. Also we get visitors from random people on the irc network we use, so the post wall of any number of posts is a wasted effort.

Well, as I previously said, we lost our chat room and Lois made arrangements for us to have access to the RU chat room. So it is not really ours, and we don’t have any control over it.

Wish I could be more helpful, but it didn’t occur on my watch.

The irc chat is good, but the web client that none of us controls the code off is not good, so there is nothing to do there really. It probably would be a good idea at some point to figure out what chat clients are safe to use for linux, windows, apple computers, android phones, iphone, and put those things in the chat if we want to keep using irc.

Another alternative that may work is to set up a discord for KB and RU that is officially controlled by one of our mods/admins, that is a modern chat program that is popular. There are others of course that could work better if more security is wanted, but may be harder to find clients for.

I am not suggesting we should try to have the old flash chat back, as that won't work due to flash being deprecated.

Maybe if I rewrite the php+html+javascript+css based shout/chat box we could use that on our forum, it would basically need a single file on the server that it can read from and write to, and could prune messages after reaching a certain size for that file, but me writing code again will require me to function for that, and that is not every day for me.

I would of course want to figure out how to read the logged in user name from smf to make that a bit more nicely integrated with the forum. It should not be very hard to do that, but would require researching a bit at least.

It gets more complicated if I want to replicate pm based chat though, that irc is able to do, and multiple channels/multi user chats, also require a bit of work, maybe I will do something like that eventually and we can put it up on the server (assuming we have someone who can access the server files, I am not sure forum admins can do that).

However it is probably better to just use a competent chat that already exists with clients on all phones and desktop operating systems (discord being one popular such).

I think it's relatively easy to set up your own Discord "server" and then populate it with channels. What I don't know is how much effort is required to maintain such a server. Presumably you'd have to process requests for invitations, and then monitor the channels for inapproptiate messages.

As you note, one advantage is that there are Discord apps for most smartphones and operating systems, or you can just use your regular web browser.

Viber and WhatsApp no way they are absolutely awful and you will be “in court” with those of you want to hide anything.  The absolute best right now is skred period! Session is good but servers in a 5 eyes nation, the end to end helps and encryption is hard to break even for a quantum computer at the moment. You would have to be pretty bad if they want you with session. This chart is a bit out of date but here

On top of that what are you defending against is the question you need to ask yourself. End to end encryption is a must the part that you should be aware of is who holds the encryption keys? Is it you or on a server as well? Cause if it%u2019s also on a server the company has access to all your messages. Without the key no one can see it no matter how hard they try. These are critical to understanding what your messages do and where they go. This is why so many liked Tox it was connected only to you and the other user. No messages stored on a server when they or you weren%u2019t online, while simple the message isn%u2019t delivered unless both parties are online thereby cutting out the middle man(server) to store messages until you or I can view them. Just an avenue of security to consider. There are many in depth areas to go into about all this and it will blow your mind how much even this site can learn about you

The least of my worries. This site is different.

I was simply pointing out that NO where is safe that is it. I chose to mention this site as this is where we are. No malice no ill intent at all.
No need to focus on that, but rather the security that we all use as per this thread and in particular about “somewhere to chat”

We security and slightly paranoid folks mean no harm :) It is good to be aware of things, and then one can choose how much one cares about those things.

Woo to Ghost90 for trying to be informative and helpful :)

The linked site with secure chat apps, is a little bit annoying to me, reason being that if we are to use a secure chat, it needs to work for desktop folks and mobile folks, not just mobile ones. I did not look super hard, but I think that a lot of those apps do not have a desktop version.

This list is a bit out of date but not too much has changed and wickr is now defunct. I will try and find the more up to date list.
