The cicadas are now out in full force.

If you ever go on google, they always have a different logo type (aka Google Doodles).

Todays caught my eye and I clicked on it.  It's called the double cicada-brood.

cut/paste below

This animated Doodle celebrates the Double Cicada Brood Event, in which two groups of cicadas will emerge from the earth at the same time.

This Doodle celebrates “cicada-geddon” where two broods of cicadas — brood XIII and XIX — will start to crawl up from the soil. This event is as uncommon as it is strange to witness. The last time the U.S. saw these two broods flying together was over 200 years ago! Brood XII comes out every 17 years in the Midwest, while brood XIX emerges every 13 years and will swarm across the Midwest and Southeast. That means some states, like Illinois, will see both groups of cicadas at once!

These bugs are about 2 inches long with bright red eyes and iridescent wings, and they begin to surface when it hits about 64° F. Cicadas are only above ground for about 5 weeks and then disappear again for 13 or 17 years. This underground period is why cicadas have some of the longest lifespans amongst insects ’ even though we only see them briefly.

As the cicada shells pile up on trees and sidewalks and the buzzing fills your ears, try not to let them bug you. These clumsy insects fly by the trillions but don’t sting, bite, or poison. Plus, many predictions show they’ll be out of your hair by late June, leaving behind a feast for local animals like birds and raccoons.

So there’s no need to brood when this cicada party ends — a different group will be back before you know it!

 https://doodles.google/doodle/double-cicada-brood-2024/

The number of cicadas that have prevented us from sitting outside has decreased  but the volume of the male cicada's love call to the female cicada has increased big time. The noise sounds like the sound heard in old movies when aliens or huge bugs are attacking. My plants and grass are covered with cicada shells.

==> Anatolian Turkish

A couple of days ago a young lady living in Türkiye wrote to me, introducing herself and her studies. She mentioned being interested in something called the World Brotherhood Union, of which I'd never heard.

Judging by the website, the WBU is a New Age movement based on a Book of Knowledge channeled in Anatolian Turkish. I'd never heard of that, either, and had to look it up. It appears to be a medieval form of Turkish, which leaves me wondering why cosmic intelligences chose it as the medium to send their messages to mankind.

On the other hand, the channelers I've met did have a penchant for vaguely biblical phrasing, with a liberal scattering of 'thees' and 'thous'. I can't think of any who went further back and channeled in Chaucerian English. :)

TIL that if a woman with a negative blood type is pregnant with a baby with a positive blood type, and it's the mother's second or subsequent pregnancy, her body will develop antibodies that will fight the baby as if it were an infection.

Had that in my family. The baby was given an "in utero" blood transfusion; somewhat groundbreaking in the UK at the time.  It gets progressively worse with the number of pregnancies.

Isnt it known as Toxemia?

Toxemia is the out-of-use term for Pre-eclampsia, a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure. Pre-eclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in a woman whose blood pressure had been normal. It can lead to serious, even fatal, complications for both mother and baby.

Rh factor incompatibility occurs when a mother and fetus have different Rh factors, a protein found on some red blood cells. If the mother is Rh-negative and the fetus is Rh-positive, the mother's body may attack the fetus's blood cells. This can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, including: brain damage, fluid buildup, seizures, heart failure, and death.

FYI, President Snow does not, in fact, survive his predecessors. He's killed by the angry townspeople moments after Katniss refuses to execute him.

Oh, spoiler alert...

Spoiler alert: That meme has a picture of The Architect (Helmut Bakaitis) from The Matrix Reloaded (2003), but the quote is actually something said by The Merovingian (remember when I used to use that name?). It is assumed both The Architect and The Merovingian survived the destruction of Agent Smith and the Matrix, as they were the creator of the Matrix and an exiled Operating System, who both lived through all five versions of the Matrix.

President Snow was played by Donald Sutherland in the Hunger Games Trilogy.

You're right, and I was completely wrong.

Meanwhile, I just saw the news (from your post) that Donald Sutherland died today...

Wasn’t that wild? I saw the news maybe 30 minutes after our posts.

So sad. I really enjoyed his body of work.

TIL that Donald Sutherland had 4 sons and a daughter.  He named his sons after the directors he much appreciated, hence Kieffer Sutherland and Roeg Sutherland (can't remember the other two).

I too much appreciated his film work.  Never even nominated for an Oscar, but won some other awards.

The big question remains - did they or didn't they during "Don't Look Now"  ;D

Donald Sutherland shared Kiefer Sutherland and a daughter, Rachel Sutherland, with his ex-wife Shirley Douglas. He was also dad to sons Roeg Sutherland, Rossif Sutherland and Angus Sutherland, whom he shared with his wife, Francine Racette.

He never won an Oscar, but for his lifetime achievement in film, he was awarded the Academy Honorary Award at the 2017 Governors Awards by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Nothing spectacular, but interesting.

A single grain of sand, if moving unhindered at the speed of light, were to impact earth, would produce enough energy to burn half the planet, then send it into a nuclear winter. An estimated 6% of the human population might survive.

It is completely impossible, but still kinda freaky.
