I LOVED Poisonwood Bible. It had a rare sense of humor.  I think I'll find my copy and read it again.

That one was my favorite.

I liked the way she portrayed the husband, a Baptist in Africa. A less talented writer would have made him into a caricature, mocking and belittling him for his beliefs, and his actions based on his beliefs. Kingsolver never does that. Though she does portray him as misguided, she never condescends, and never resorts to mockery.

My favorite character was the daughter Leah. What a spitfire! She's possibly even more dogmatic than her father, but she's a full-blown three-dimensional character, with heart, soul, and brains. She struck me as someone I'd enjoy hanging out with in real life.

You should also check out "Animal Dreams," a story about a woman who returns to her hometown somewhere in the Southwest to care for her father who's suffering from  Alzheimer's. The two main characters are fascinating, and the novel is rich in both Spanish and Native American culture.

I'm a HUGE fan of Jim Butcher's 'Dresden Files' series, so I figured I'd dig in and get his earlier 'Codex Alera' series.  Read the first 4 of 6 and they're pretty good, but not up to 'Dresden' par.

Jim's working on a *NEW* Harry Dresden book, as of now titled 'Peace Talks'!

I decided to go back to the book shelves and just grab any book......
Ended up with Richard Mason's Novel "The World Of Suzie Wong".
Old book, but very good, better than the movie.

Love,
Liz

I just re-read Stalin: In the Court of the Red Czar.

It is a very well written biography and shows a lot of insight into the Soviet regime of the time.

One of my favorite historical fiction writers wrote a history. I'm finding solace in reading it.

Bernard Cornwell,

"Waterloo The  History of Four Days, Three Armies, and Theee Battles".

Written in the early seventies, coming true today.

"The migrants make their way north, having no desire to assimilate to French culture, but continuing to demand a First World standard of living, even as they flout laws, do not produce, and murder French citizens."

The Nightside series by Simon R. Green, currently 12 books in all.

Imagine Harry Dresden authored by Doug Adams, and you'd be fairly close.  :emot_laughing:

edit: I've finished the 8th book in the series, and enjoyed it enough that I ordered the other 4, as well as filling out another similar series by Simon R. Green that I hadn't started reading yet (was missing the first 4 books).

Just finished Valley Of The Horses by Jean Auel.   A story set in prehistoric time that follows a young girl of the Cro-Magnon people, that is orphaned and raised by Neanderthals (Clan Of The Cave Bear - book 1).    In Valley Of The Horses (which is book 2) she sets out to find her own people.  It is fascinating reading how she survives on her own and the struggles a person faces during this time.

You need to read a two book set by Penina Keen Spinka (yes that's her name).
The first book is:  Picture Maker.
The Second is:     Dream Weaver
You won't be disappointed. They are both fantastic books.

Love,
Liz

Thank you Liz!   Just ordered book 1 on Amazon in hardcover.   They don't have it on Kindle, which fits in my purse.   :(

My brother in law has the remainder of the books of Auel, some in kindle format, some in paperback.  Paperback might be tough with as small as the print is.   I need a short break anyways from it anyways.   Was looking for something to read.  This will be perfect.
