I'm currently reading City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. Why the hell can't I find any fantasy fiction anymore that isn't targeted at 14-year-old girls?

Just google for fantasy books like Game of Thrones. There are lot of good gritty fantasy books out there.

Have you tried the Dune series? That is pretty much the gold standard for fiction fantasy as well as fantasy fiction.

Something about something by someone important.

Robert Jordan's "Wheel Of Time" while a long series of books  is pretty good reading also.

Started the Liad Universe audiobooks, by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller, last week. I'm a couple hours into #4 - Trade Secrets. It's always been one of my favorite scifi series.

I'd recommend the following, for non-14-year-old-girl, high-grit fantasy:
The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher (Urban fantasy, set mainly in Chicago)
Codex Alera, also by Jim Butcher (best described as Romans with Pokemon, according to tvtropes)
The Black Company series, by Glen Cook
Garrett PI, also by Glen Cook
The Malazan Book of the Fallen, by Steve Erikson
MythAdventures, by Robert Asprin (low-grit fantasy, as I recall)
Paksenarrion series, by Elizabeth Moon
The Recluse series, by L E Modesitt, Jr

Of course, none of these are really new, and it occurs to me that you probably already know about them.

I could go on, but I need to get my ass moving for Michigan. Happy reading!

"And the Sea Will Tell" by Vincent Bugliosi

Interesting book. Not sure what to think. The author (who is also the defendants lawyer) obviously has his bias so I'd be curious for an objective perspective. Anyone know the story?

I'm slowly plowing through Game of Thrones. It's so depressing!

And in between I'm reading Cesar's Legions, and The Monuments Men.

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

"Monuments Men" is a great book.

The movie, however, was really lame...

'The Art of Stealing Time' by Katie MacAlister  :emot_kiss:

(another Urban Fantasy that's perilously close to porn...)  ;D

'A Flash of Hex' by Jes Battis,

I picked up a series at #2... that's the breaks when you preferentially shop at second-hand book stores.  On the plus side, it's a good read, so I'll have to hunt down the other 4 books in the series.

The only annoying thing is that he occasionally spends way too many words describing Vancouver.  That may be wonderful for people that KNOW Vancouver, but to me it's merely an annoying distraction.  There's a delicate balance on 'setting the stage', and the characters should be the focus, not the scenery.

Jes is a member of the Vancouver LGBT community, so if you're a flaming homophobe you might want to pass on his book.  It's not 'gay porn' (not even close), but two of the lead characters are hot for each other, and he plays a bit with gender issues during the book. ;)

Half-way through with the last <SOB!> book of The Hollows series by Kim Harrison:

I'd been trying to find it for a year, and finally broke down and did another big AbeBooks order.  It showed up 2 weeks later, with a bunch more books to fill out various series I've mostly read.  It apparently hasn't come out in paperback yet, I could only find a hardback for a few dollars.

Damn... I'm really gonna miss Ivy & Rachel.  I've been following that series since 2004.

This is a series I've been reading by Seanan McGuire.  She also writes some cool Zombie fiction under the name of Mira Grant.

The first book in her zombie series is called FEED.

Terry Brooks
New novel in the sequence (also on TV).
The Chronicles of Shannara...."The Elfstones of Shannara".
(If you are thinking of diving into the Chronicles, be advised at there are at least a dozen books by Brooks preceding this one, it will be an expensive endeavor).
 :D
