I remember my father bringing home the White Album, and we all stood reverentially around the turntable, as he dropped it on for the first play. Nothing like fresh vinyl.

The Wikipedia article on the White Album notes that many of the songs were written during the Beatles' sojourn at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in Rishikesh.

I have a very, very tenuous connection with the album. In 1967 I attended the "Farewell Lecture" of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's final world tour.

It was a subdued affair, with MMY rambling on about how he came out of seclusion, founded the Spiritual Regeneration Movement, and set himself the goal of spreading Transcendental Meditation worldwide, a goal that he hadn't achieved. I could see some of the TM folk on the stage looking very miserable.

So MMY said goodbye to his followers and his audience, and announced that he was returning to India and monastic seclusion.

What I didn't know was that sitting not twenty metres from me were the Beatles and their entourage.

They were invited to meet MMY after the lecture, and went off to attend his meditation course in Bangor, Wales. And the rest is history. MMY decided to postpone his return to seclusion, the Beatles (and friends) went to Rishikesh, wrote lots of fine tunes, and TM experienced a major boom.

I am a life long meditator. Not a follower of the MMY, but introduced via Theravada Buddhism.

Do you have a recommendation for a readable introduction to Theravada Buddhism?

I studied Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, and its migration from India, to Tibet, to China, to Korea, and to Japan. My knowledge of the Theravada tradition is rudimentary.

What a great picture. Any idea what year it was taken? They look like they're high school age.

It was taken on February 6, 1959. John was 19, Paul was 17, and John was 16.

Whoever wrote about the scene was way off. Barb was much closer.

Assuming Wikipedia has their correct dates of birth, on that day in February, John was 18 years, 3 months and 28 days old. He died before Miss Barbara was a year old.

Paul was 16 years, 7 months, and 19 days old. Last month he celebrated observed his 81st birthday.  Whether he celebrated or not is unknown (to me).

Young George was 15 years, 11 months and 12 days old. He was 2 weeks and 5 days away from turning 16. He's now been dead for 22 years, come November.

I just know what I read on the Internet.

From The Daily Beatle… quoting the bloke who actually took the photograph. But what do I know? I wasn’t born yet.  :emot_laughing:

I need help with this photo of John in a recording studio:

I can't for the life of me see what's keeping his chair from tipping over backwards. Any suggestions?

July 28, 1971. George Harrison & Ravi Shankar's Concert for Bangladesh was held at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.

Ringo is a left handed drummer that played on a right handed kit. As a result, 99% of his grooves have never been replicated. That makes him one of the greatest drummers, ever.

My son was first chair and Drumline captain through most of high school. One of my favorite photos of him is him holding two first division drum solo medals, while wearing a Ringo T-shirt. And Ringo is looking out between the two medals.

From the way he's sitting, it looks like his center of gravity is just close enough to the top of the chair to keep it upright.

I've actually sat on a kitchen chair that way, and I can tell you from experience that there's a very fine line between having enough of your weight on the seat to keep it upright, and shifting that center of gravity too far back, which will result in the back of your head bouncing off the floor.  ;D

If you want to experiment with it yourself, I'd suggest putting the chair in front of a couch so that if you fall backward, you'll have a soft landing. Full disclosure, I was not smart enough to do that the first time I tried it, which is why I know about the whole head bouncing part.

leaning forward/"doubling over"  as a start. We did it in high school before they took the chairs away and replaced them with booths and swivel seats. It was an automatic write up/ detention if you got caught doing that by a dean. But we used to do it anyways.

Our wedding reception was held in the first place the Beatles ever played with their famous line up after Ringo Starr joined them in 1962 (Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight village on the Wirral in north west England).

The location comes in handy about once a decade in pub quizzes  ;D
