Gina - I think that both groups helped define how the music would go from the time they became known.  The Beatle's music, at first, seemed to draw more girls whereas the Stones played up their so-called bad boy image by playing music that catered more to the rebellious teenagers. Together, they accounted probably to the vast percentage of listeners.  Both the Beatles and the Stones were good for Rock and Roll back then. Their music is still being played 50 years later.  A great tribute.

Like almost every comparison between acts in music, I think the comparison between the Beatles and the Stones makes for an interesting conversation but it's a disservice to both groups. They're just not the same and, whatever your taste is in regards to either of them, they've both clearly made a huge impact on our collective culture.

Gina not sure where or how you'd get this as it's a UK based programme.
Three part drama based on the life of Cilla Black, I think you'd enjoy it. A couple of seconds into the trailer below will tell you why  ;D

On today's date in 1968, 'Hey Jude' was number 1 on the charts...

Which charts?

Hey Jude was released on 26 August 1968 in the United States. It swiftly rose to the number one spot, where it remained for the next nine weeks - the longest run achieved by any Beatles single. The single sold five million copies in six months, and a further million by the end of 1968. Altogether it spent 19 weeks in the charts.

In the UK it was released on 30 August. The single began its 16-week chart run on 7 September 1968, rising to the top spot a week later. It spent two weeks at number one before being deposed by another Apple single, Mary Hopkin's Those Were The Days, which was produced by Paul McCartney.

Hey Jude is the biggest-selling debut release ever for a label, and remains The Beatles' most commercially-successful single. It has sold an estimated eight million copies worldwide and has topped the charts in 11 countries.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2781430/Childhood-home-Beatles-legend-George-Harrison-lived-age-six-sold-auction-100-000.html

Gina, I'm not sure what the area is like but it's definitely a bargain :D

Childhood home of Beatles legend George Harrison where he lived from the age of six to be sold at auction for £100,000
Harrison lived at the three-bed Speke, Liverpool council house for 12 years
Was living there when he first met Paul McCartney and John Lennon
Their band The Quarrymen, which became The Beatles, practised there
Guide price is £80,000 less than average house price in England and Wales

They went on to become the biggest band of all time, selling millions of records and earning millions of pounds, but a house that is going up for auction in Liverpool shows the humble beginnings of The Beatles.
It was the childhood home of George Harrison - where he first met Paul McCartney and John Lennon - and has a guide price of just £100,000.
Harrison moved into 25 Upton Green in Speke, Liverpool, when he was six, and lived in the three-bedroom council house for the next 12 years

It was at a nearby bus stop that he met and became friends with a young McCartney.
McCartney introduced him to his friend John Lennon, and invited him to join Lennon's band, The Quarrymen.
They would regularly rehearse at 25 Upton Green and it was from the doorstep that a famous photo was taken of Harrison, then 15, heading off to a Quarrymen gig holding his guitar.

But it wasn't long before they had outgrown the small, terraced house. They went on to form The Beatles, becoming the best known and most successful musicians in the world.
The family home, which also has a back garden, has a guide price £80,000 less than the average price of a home in England and Wales.
But Beatlemania could cause the price to skyrocket, as fans of the band look to get their hands on the home.
Last year, John Lennon's first home, 9 Newcastle Road, was sold for £480,000, despite having a guide price of just £150,000.
The house was sold by Countrywide Property Auctions, who will also sell the Harrison house at the Cavern Club in Liverpool on October 20.
The auction house described the sale of a piece of 'Liverpool's musical heritage' as a 'momentous occasion'.
It said: 'Countrywide Property Auctions are delighted and honoured to once again be invited to offer at auction, another piece of Beatles history.'
George Harrison's childhood home is not the only Beatles property for sale at the moment - but it is the most affordable.

A posh London flat which was lived in by both Harrison and Ringo Starr in the 1960s is on the market for £2.5million.
And John Lennon's old six-bedroom home in Weybridge, Surrey, is available for £13.75 million.

Sunday, Oct 5th marked the 52nd anniversary of the first single from the boys; Love Me Do.

Written by: Lennon-McCartney
Recorded: 6 June, 4 and 11 September 1962
Producers: Ron Richards, George Martin
Engineer: Norman Smith

Released: 5 October 1962 (UK), 27 April 1964 (US)

Paul McCartney: vocals, bass
John Lennon: vocals, harmonica, acoustic rhythm guitar
George Harrison: acoustic rhythm guitar
Ringo Starr: drums, tambourine
Pete Best: drums
Andy White: drums

Available on:
Please Please Me
Past Masters
1
Anthology Vol. 1
Live At The BBC

Love Me Do, The Beatles' debut single, was released in the UK on 5 October 1962.

The song was an early Lennon-McCartney composition from 1958, although it wasn't recorded by the group for another four years.

The Beatles recorded three versions of Love Me Do.

The first was at their EMI audition on 6 June 1962, featuring Pete Best on drums.

They returned to the song during the 4 September session, where it was considered for release along with "How Do You Do It".

The group tackled it again on 11 September, after which it was deemed good enough for release as a single.

Although Ringo Starr had played drums on 4 September, George Martin brought in a session drummer, Andy White, for the subsequent recording; Ringo was relegated to tambourine.

The presence of the tambourine is the easiest way to distinguish the two recordings. Initial copies of the single had Ringo on drums, though the Andy White version became the preferred version from the release of the Beatles Hits EP on 6 September 1963. To consolidate the decision EMI destroyed the master tapes of the 4 September recording.

It is White's version which appears on the Please Please Me album, though Ringo's drumming can be heard on Past Masters. The recording featuring Pete Best appeared on Anthology 1 in 1995.

I am including the June 6th "Pete Best" version and the "Ringo" take from Sept 4th.

Lol, my first thought was, "Billy Joel? WTF?!?"

I listened to a clip of it on Amazon, and it's wretched. He growls, rather than sings, and he does a note-perfect imitation, and not a real cover.

Unfortunately, most of the songs on the CD fail for this same reason: They're slavish note-by-note reproductions of the originals, and the covering artists do nothing with them. A couple of exceptions: Willie Nelson's "Yesterday," Dion's "Drive My Car," B.B. King's "On the Way," and my personal favorite, Allen Toussaint's "Lady Madonna.

Go to Amazon, and you can hear a 30-second sample.

Alas, it sucks...
