On today's date in 1961, the Beatles returned from Hamburg and played their first show at the Cavern since embarking on their trip to Germany.

Gia,

I was reading about the passing of the last surviving Ramone the other day and in the article it stated that the Ramones took their name from the alias Paul McCartney used when he signed into hotels. I never knew that.  Wonder if you did?

A pine tree planted in 2004 in California to honor George Harrison has died.  The cause, beetle infestation.  Just cannot make this stuff up.

The last two days saw the closing in on more 50th anniversaries...

On the 5th of this month (Aug) one of the arguably best albums by the lads, Revolver passed its 48th year since its release.

The next day, on the 6th, HELP! saw its 49th year since the release of that landmark album.

It was 45 years ago, today!
On August 8th 1969, the photo session for the cover of Abbey Road took place.

There is a live webcam of the crossing on the studios page.

I am guessing that photo is one of the most copied photo by other groups, people, etc then any other album cover.

Wolfman Jack,, and the sound of his voice late at night as I listened to the music of that era. OMG!!  Nothing like it. Beatles, Stones, Beach boys, Dave Clark Five, Supremes, Jan and Dean, Kings Men, Gene Pitney.. the list is endless.

Music had taken a turn and was changing almost over night. I have a stack of old albums and 45's .. that I have carried around for yrs.

Interesting thread. thanks.  :emot_kiss:

The Beatles played their second Shea Stadium show on today's date in 1966, though it lacked the fervor of the 1965 show (which was the first ever major stadium concert).

A bit over 45,000 fans attended the 1966 Shea Stadium show (11,000 short of a sellout). Six days later in San Francisco, the Beatles put on their last official concert.

Their setlist at Shea on August 23, 1966:

Rock And Roll Music,
She's A Woman,
If I Needed Someone,
Day Tripper,
Baby's In Black,
I Feel Fine,
Yesterday,
I Wanna Be Your Man,
Nowhere Man,
Paperback Writer
and Long Tall Sally.

'Hey Jude' with 'Revolution' as the B side was released on today's date in 1968. It was the first single from Apple Records, and at more than seven minutes long, the longest single to that point to top the British charts.

'Hey Jude' also rocketed to number one in the U.S., spending nine weeks at the top.

Last week, the LOVE cast celebrated the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' historic arrival in Las Vegas by retracing the band's original 1964 journey. Flying from San Francisco International to McCarran International in Las Vegas, the cast surprised travellers with performances at both airports.

On a more somber note, John Chapman, who shot and killed John Lennon 34 years ago, was denied parole for the eighth straight time late last week. He told the parole board that he was sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory.

"Imagine" the music Sir Paul and him would still be making. Sad.

Actually his name is Mark David Chapman. But the shit did take a great talent from the world. Sad indeed.

The Beatles gave their last official concert performance on today's date in 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

Recalled George Harrison:

"Before one of the last numbers, we actually set up this camera, I think it had a fisheye, a wide-angle lens. We set it up on the amplifier and Ringo came off the drums, and we stood with our backs to the audience and posed for a photograph, because we knew that was the last show."

As to the Rolling Stones, they always took their cues from the Beatles, and if you break it down... they truly owed their initial success to George Harrison who recommended signing them to Dick Rowe (The man from Decca who rejected the Beatles as a passe guitar group, on their way out.)

John Lennon backs me up here... Talk about vindication!
