On this day - July 24th

1967 - All four Beatles and their manager Brian Epstein signed a petition printed in The Times newspaper calling for the legalisation of marijuana.

1967 - The Beatles meet Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose lecture on Transcendental Meditation (TM) they had gone to hear at the Hilton Hotel in London. TM involved the silent repetition of a word or sound to produce a state of mind that reduces stress, calms the mind, and energizes both mind and body. The Maharishi invited The Beatles to travel with him to Bangor, in North Wales, to attend more lectures. They accepted his invitation.

1969 - Paul McCartney recorded a demo of his new song ‘Come and Get It’ at Abbey Road studios in London. McCartney gave the song to The Iveys, (soon to become known as Badfinger). Their version was later used as the theme for the movie The Magic Christian. The Beatles also recorded ‘Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard’ for their forthcoming Abbey Road album.

August 23, 1962 - John Lennon married Cynthia Powell at Liverpool's Mount Pleasant register office.

It was the same place where, in 1938, his mother Julia had married Freddy Lennon, putting her occupation down as cinema usherette as a joke. As on that earlier occasion, no parents were present. Cynthia’s mother had come from Canada but had gone again; and Aunt Mimi could not bear to see history repeat itself so exactly.

Cynthia was given away by her brother, Tony, and Brian Epstein - who had obtained the special marriage license-acted as John’s best man. With Insufficient money to buy herself a new wedding outfit, Cynthia went before the registrar wearing some of Astrid’s cast-off clothes. Paul and George were there also, torn between embarrassment and giggles.

Much of the service was inaudible, owing to road construction. Afterward, in the pouring rain, they ran across the road for a chicken lunch at Reece’s restaurant. Since Reece’s had no alcohol license, the toast to the newlyweds was done with water.

John played a gig that night with The Beatles at Liverpool's Riverpark Ballroom.

ON THIS DATE (44 YEARS AGO)
August 26, 1968 - The Beatles: "Hey Jude" b/w "Revolution" (Apple 2276) is released in the US.

"Hey Jude" is a song by The Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. In 2004 and later in 2010, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song at #8 on "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time," making it the highest ranked Beatles song on the list.

Sir Paul McCartney was in Paris today, Saturday 8th September 2012, to be awarded a prestigious Legion of Honor, the highest decoration in France.

He was promoted to the rank of Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honor (the Légion d’honneur) by President Francois Hollande in a private ceremony this morning at the Élysée Palace. President Hollande personally decorated Paul with the insignia of the Legion of Honor himself in front of an audience of Paul’s family and friends.

During the presentation the President praised Paul for his contribution to the arts, not just in France but all over the world...

A fascinating coincidence:

Today is the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Beatles single, "Love Me Do."

Today is also the 50th anniversary of the release of the first James Bond film, "Dr. No."

Isn't that interesting?
