Los Angeles - EMI Group says consumers in North America, Japan and the U.K. bought more than 2.25 million copies of The Beatles' remastered albums in the first five days after their September 9 release, breaking records for most simultaneous titles in the top-selling charts by a single artist. On Billboard's pop catalog chart, for example, the band had 16 titles in the top 50, including all 14 remastered CDs and two box sets.

Lucy Vodden of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Fame Dies at 46

Lucy Vodden, the woman who inspired the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, died last Tuesday at the age of 46. Voddens death, after a long battle with Lupus, was announced on Monday by the St. Thomas Hospital in London, where she was being treated.

Vodden, whos maiden name was ODonnell, was a childhood friend of John Lennons son, Julian. After painting a picture of her with diamond shaped eyes, young Julian brought the drawing home from school, and told his dad, Thats Lucy in the sky with diamonds, inspiring the song which appeared on the 1967 album, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Many have speculated that the song is a reference to LSD, however, the Beatles, who admitted to using the drug around that time, never confirmed the rumor.

Julian Lennon had been in contact with Lucy in recent years, supporting her through her illness.

Incidentally, I remember hearing news stories around the time of her death saying that she hated the song itself, and resented her link to the song. How true this is I'm not sure, but I can't seem to find the relevant news stories now.

Also, Julian Lennon is due to release a song called "Lucy" on the 15th of December 2009 in honour of her, with the proceeds going to a charity to find a cure for her disease, Lupus. I'm always struck by just how much Julian looks like John. He has exactly the same facial structure, and identical piercing eyes!

For me, the best thing about the Stones was the amazing music! What an amazing combination of mississippi blues with rock music. I know it's each to their own, but I just found the beatles too 'poppy'. They had no edge to them really. Ok, some of their lyrics could be quite 'cutting', if you really think about them, but the music has to be there too.

Having said that, freed from their constraints, George Harrison and John Lennon wrote some amazing music and beautiful lyrics while solo. For me, I would have the Stones as a group, and the beatles solo.

The Beatles are hands down the greatest rock band of all time.  They were true
pioneers who brought rock & roll out of the realm of Top 40 and into that of high art.
They were accomplished musicians and songwriters who, with producer George Martin
as the "fifth Beatle" were innovators of the use of multi-track recording to create
true musical masterpieces.  The Rolling Stones, though a great band in their own right,
were pretty one dimensional.  And their "bad boy" image is alot of overblown hype imho.
As a bass player myself, I consider Paul McCartney as one of rock's greatest bassists.
Check out his bass lines on "Drive My Car"......

I freekin love John Lennon! Here is a little insight to his writing and arranging work. You can actually hear him progress through different interpretations of the melody and strumming style. I love when he stops and says "I canna do it."
