Two loss Bama in the mix

Georgia and Ole Miss are right there behind Alabama and they both have two losses. No one's beaten Indiana in 10 tries, and there are three one-loss teams ranked ahead of them. Makes you wonder.

I watched the Game of the Century. Nixon visited Fayetteville and sat with LBJ.

And of course, the big brother/little brother grudge match. Reborn.

Thursday night's game between North Carolina State and Georgia Tech turned into quite a slugfest, especially at the end.

There were a combined 36 points scored in the fourth quarter, including 14 in the last minute of the game.

After leading most of the game, Georgia Tech scored the last touchdown and won 30-29 when NCSU's last second, 60-yard field goal attempt was plenty long enough but drifted wide left by mere inches.

Remember what Vince Lombardi used to say? "We didn't lose the game, we just ran out of time."

I used to live in Chapel Hill, halfway between Duke and UNC, and never knew which teams I should support.

It struck me just now that people living in areas that host several sports teams must have a similar problem. Something like the UK rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City, or Rangers and Celtic, or the many London clubs.

Which led me to wonder if, for example, someone supports one local team over the other(s), and one of the teams he/she doesn't support is playing against an "outside" team, does local loyalty trump internecine rivalry?

That depends on a number of factors. Families have been torn apart by sports rivalries. Sometimes, wearing the wrong jersey is inviting violence on yourself. Sometimes, an entire family will be for a team. I like to believe that rival fans won't fight in the parking lot after a game or that the one white shirt sitting amongst a sea of red won't be attacked, but I've seen both happen.

It comes down to the maturity and commom sense of the sports fans involved.

This happened so long ago that I can't point to a news source, but I do remember that a British football stadium that was troubled by rowdy, often violent, fans came up with a novel solution.

On the advice of a psychologist, they placed one or two women here and there among the sea of male fans on the terraces. Incidents of violence dropped to almost zero, like a drop of female oil on troubled male waters.

On November 27, 1969, the Texas Longhorns beat the Texas A&M Aggies 49–14 at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas. The Longhorns' victory was the most points ever scored against the Aggies at the time.  My dad was a tea sip (as am I). My uncle was an Aggie. The whole family, grand parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins gathered around the television. I thought fisticuffs were going to break out.  But it was a glorious day to be a Longhorn.

The most interesting thing I learned after last week's games is that Indiana has lost 30 games in a row against Ohio State.

THIRTY straight losses to Ohio State, dating back to 1988.

The last time Indiana beat the Buckeyes, staci wasn't even born yet!!

Indiana's overall record against Ohio State is 12-80-5.

The Georgia-Georgia Tech game surpassed ALL expectations tonight. At halftime, Tech led 17-0. With five minutes left in the game, Tech still led 27-13, but UGA wasn't done and they tied it up with two mnutes left in the game. In the first OT, UGA scored a TD and so did Tech. In the second OT, Tech scored a TD, but failed on the 2 point conversion. UGA scored a TD on their first play on the 2nd OT but also failed on the 2 point conversion. In the 3rd OT, UGA failed their 2 point conversion. Tech also failed. In the 4th OT, Tech failed their 2 point conversion and so did UGA. In the 5th OT, UGA scored on their 2 point conversion and so did Tech. On to the 6th OT, the Tech QB was sacked. UGA dropped a pass. On to the 7th OT, UGA failed with a QB run. Tech dropped a pass, but interference was called and Tech failed a QB run. In the 8th OT, Tech failed on their attempt. UGA scored, ending the game.

Watched the whole damn thing. Texas better beat A&M tomorrow.  A&M took four overtimes to put away Auburn last week.

Texas has yet another QB Ewers injury, ankle this time, and serious hostile venue at Kyle Field. Aggies always have a boner for Texas.

The Longhorns lead the all-time series 76-37-5, including a 10-game winning streak between 1957-66. The Aggies' longest win streak in the series was six games, lasting from 1984-89. The series ran uninterrupted from 1915 until 2011, when the Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC.

Hello little brother…

Aside from dominating on both offense and defense, college football fans learned on Saturday that Colorado's Travis Hunter is also a dominant force in the classroom.

Earlier this week, Hunter was named a finalist for the Bednarik (best defensive player), Biletnikoff (best wide receiver), Maxwell ( best all-around player) and the Walter Camp (most outstanding player) awards. On top of being a finalist for those awards, Hunter is also considered the Heisman favorite, according to FanDuel.

However, during the No. 25 Buffs' (8-3) Week 14 game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-8), ESPN's Mark Jones revealed that Hunter is sporting an impressive 4.0 GPA.

"Oh by the way folks," Jones said. "He's a 4.0 GPA student as well if you were wondering."

It's an example of Hunter's ability to excel both on and off the field that has social media in awe.

Because I have followed football closely at various times I have earned a respect for some former NFL players after their NFL days. At least two QB's (one was a BYU QB) from the 70's earned a JD and made money, post NFL, that wasn't just NFL retirement money. Roger Staubach built a real estate company and cashed out, big time, selling the company when he retired. Fran Tarkenton started a software company and is involved in other businesses.

Emmitt Smith is very much a businessman, often involved in real estate. Troy Aikman, when he isn't in the broadcasting booth, is alongside Emmitt in those deals. A onetime Houston Oiler defensive lineman invested (with others) in a string of car dealerships.

I wish my list was longer.

Hello little brother…

Ewers was not fully in tune with his receivers, which among other things resulted in a pick-Six for the Aggies.  The Longhorns had a punt blocked.  The game was very frustrating.

But the Texas Defense is capable of being a monster at times, and they stood up when needed tonight.

On to the revenge game against Georgia for the SEC championship and a first-round bye.  Ohio State lost to Michigan (which they've had a bad habit of doing), and that along with beating A&M should guarantee Texas a decent seeding.

For several reasons, I haven't been as attentive as I usually am on Saturdays. The only game I actually paid attention to today was Notre Dame vs. USC. Before the game I thought ND would stomp a mud hole in USC, but the Trojans matched the Irish TD for TD until the 4th quarter. The difference was two interceptions for TD's in the 4th quarter (one for 100 yards, the other for 95). Take away those two screw ups and there might have been a major upset with the Irish winning today 49 to 35.
