As of today, the top five ranked teams are all unbeaten. Two of those teams still have to play each other, so by the end of the season, there can be no more than four unbeatens. If the season does end with four unbeaten teams, I don't see any way for Texas to be one of the four teams selected for the playoff.

I'll admit that I'm almost completely ignorant on this topic, but out of curiosity, I googled "current college football rankings," and it took me to an AP list, which shows 7 unbeaten teams: The 5 mentioned above, plus James Madison (#18) and Liberty University (#25).

I assume those last two teams aren't in the conversation because they haven't beaten any team that presented a significant challenge.

Liberty University (LU) is a fundamentalist evangelical Christian university in Lynchburg, Virginia, founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell Sr. Liberty is among the world's largest “Christian” universities and the largest private non-profit university in the United States by total student enrollment. Most of its enrollment is in online courses. A total shit show, but they spend a lot of money on football. The same way Oral Roberts University spends money on basketball.

James Madison University (JMU, Madison, or James Madison) is a public research university in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the institution was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison and then James Madison University in 1977. It is small. A member of the Sunbelt Conference.

The Dukes, coached by former Saban assistant Curt Cignetti, are 10-0 this season and in first place in the Sun Belt Conference East Division. However, NCAA rules bar JMU from winning the conference championship, playing in a bowl game or being ranked in the College Football Playoff Top 25 because they are in the second of two years transitioning to the FBS level from FCS.

Both schools are deemed to have a weak schedule.

There really weren’t many college upsets today. But the only one I am pleased with is Oklahoma State beating Oklahoma. So that means Texas will play Oklahoma State for the Big 12 title. And I think will win out the season in our final year in the conference. 0% chance of making the CPF now. On to the SEC.

College Football Playoffs…

1. Michigan
2. Washington
3. Texas
4. Alabama

I am dumbfounded and amazed. After being sidelined at #7 in the polls most of the season, Texas decisively beat Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship to finish 12-1. Head to head win over Alabama made all the difference.

As well they should be.

Turns out, the Power 5 is really the Power 4. What a slap in the face to the ACC. Their undefeated conference champion being pushed aside after being in the top 4 all these weeks is a travesty. Especially when they were replaced by not one, but TWO teams that were not undefeated.

I think the CFP committee just didn't want to piss off the SEC so they pushed FSU down to number five and chose two SEC teams instead. Yes, I'm aware that Texas is Big-12, but after this year they will be an SEC team.

Even Ohio State has better credentials than Texas and Alabama. When you're number 3 and lose to number 2 it shouldn't knock you down that far.

Of course, no matter which four were chosen, someone would undoubtedly be pissed off about being left out.

Oh well. Next year we can argue about who finished 13th and 14th.

Alabama beat Georgia.

FSU didn’t look very strong against No. 15 Louisville.

I agree with the protests. But in the end it’s about money. Alabama has a larger fan base and more eyeballs sells more advertising. If this year has taught us anything, the days of the “student athlete” are over.

No one is suggesting undefeated Liberty deserved a playoff slot.

There was one team pissed this year.  Next year it will be 6 or even more teams.  A bunch of two and three loss teams all in a tizzy about being left in the cold. 

As for Florida State, what more could they do?  Blow teams out by 20 per game?!.  They won all of the games. They should be in.

Texas will be playing Michigan on September 7, 2024. The two schools have only played once in history. Texas defeated Michigan by one point in the 2005 Rose Bowl. This will be Texas’ first trip to Ann Arbor. Kind of excited about it.

Bowl season is off and running. Six games on Saturday. I don't know how many there are altogether, but my DVR is going to get a workout for the rest of the month because I plan on watching all of them.

It's not as daunting as it sounds. With judicious use of the DVR controls, I can watch a 3-1/2 hour game in less than two hours and not miss anything important, depending on how many injury timeouts and replay reviews there are.

I've been surprised by how much I enjoyed watching two teams that I didn't even know existed go at each other. At some point during the game, I find myself rooting for one side or the other, for reasons that I would be hard-pressed to explain.

Only 22 days until the national championship game, so I'll be making the most of what's ahead during the next three weeks. After January 8, no more college football until the end of summer. By then, I might be ready for a hiatus.

Bowl season is half-over. Twenty-two games have been played and I've watched them all, spread over a ten-day period. I've watched a lot of 6-6 teams trying to beat each other up.

There are twenty-two yet to come (counting the National Championship Game 1/8, which technically is not a bowl game) and now it starts to get a little more interesting. The first 22 games were spread out over 10-days, but the last 21 are being played in just seven days, so it might be a struggle for me to keep up.

I can't decide the bowl with the biggest mismatch. Is it #8 Oregon (-17) against #23 Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl? Or maybe #6 Georgia (-19) against #5 Florida State in the Orange Bowl? The undefeated Seminoles still aren't getting much respect.

One other thing puzzles me, #14 Arizona (-3) against #12 Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl is one example. The (minus three) means Arizona is favored by three points, if I understand how the point spread works. So how could Oklahoma have a 75% chance of winning the game? There are several bowl games where those types of numbers are projected and that doesn't make sense to me. Doesn't the favored team have a better than 50% chance of winning?

My understanding is the college trading portal opened on December 4 and closes on January 2. All of the players who entered the portal have lost their roster spots, leaving the depth charts thin at a number of schools. Oklahoma’s starting quarterback has left. That is likely affecting the odds on some games, I can’t believe Oklahoma has a 75% likelihood of winning.
