For me, the icing on my birthday cake was Notre Dame beating Texas A&M 23-13 at Kyle Field.

The Aggies spent $80 million to get rid of head coach Jimbo Fisher and replace him with Duke’s Mike Elko. They’ve been trash talking about winning the SEC and making a run on a Natty all year. Well, Elko looked like a deer in the headlights last night.

You're not the only one regretting Jimbo

AGGIES are good at that blowhard stuff. ND shut them up, 0-1 for the season.

Boston College 28 - Florida State 13.  FSU has now dropped three in a row, after a 19 game winning streak that left them bellyaching about the CFP and suing to leave the ACC.

Largest home loss, as an AP top 10 team, in FSU history.

46 hours 8 minutes until kickoff in the Big House.  I know you Northerners are all probably pulling for Big Blue, but I think the Horns may surprise you. We do have an unbeaten record against Michigan.

The unbroken record remains.

31-12

It wasn’t as close as that sounds.

Notre Dame           14
Northern Illinois    16

Small colleges compete to play big colleges, like Notre Dame, because even though the small college will get blown out, but the payout will be ten times what the small college would have received by playing another small college. The big college has to guard against complacency, bur I am sure I wouldn't want to be in a Notre Dame uniform on Monday morning.

Toe - Your Longhorns looked very good. They snapped three streaks of Michigan.

Dudestar - Always like it when a little recognized school that draws most of its student body from the Chicago area beats a well known and highly ranked powerhouse.

Michigan should play Notre Dame. They're right next to each other now at 17 and 18 in the AP Poll.

Oregon is 2-0 but have dropped 5 spots in the first two weeks. They started out at #4 and dropped 3 places after their first win, by 10 points over Idaho. This week they dropped two more spots to number 9 after beating Boise State with a field goal as time ran out.

Voters aren't impressed when a team is favored by two touchdowns or more and barely eke out a win.

Texas #2.  Let’s stay there until we host Georgia on  October 19.

Florida State's game against Memphis on Saturday should have been the point at which, following a disastrous start, the Seminoles came out on fire and played with passion. They should have imparted the sense that, no matter what else has happened, the entire season hinged on the outcome of this one contest against Mike Norvell's former team.

It was the perfect opportunity to turn things around. Memphis is a good team, and certainly one of the best in the Group of Five ranks, but it's also a team that Florida State should be able to beat within the friendly confines of Doak-Campbell Stadium.

But if Week 3 was a test of character, Florida State failed miserably. In front of fans sporting brown paper bags on their heads -- a telltale sign of franchises-turned-sour -- Florida State dug its own hole even deeper with a 20-12 loss. Norvell's squad is now the first preseason top-10 team to ever start 0-3 with all three losses coming against unranked teams.

Other week 3 happenings:

Utah felll behind early against Utah state, but got it together for a 38-21 win

LSU was behind most of the game against South Carolina and rallied to win it 36-33

UNLV won 23-20 against Kansas, but that final score hides that Kansa was just awful most of the game.

Nail Biters:

UCF over TCU  35-34

West Virginia lost to Pittsburg 34-38

Georgia over Kentucky 13-12

I want to give a shout out to Arch Manning. When Texas Heisman candidate Qwinn Ewers left in the first with a mysterious “abdominal injury,” Manning was given a starting role. He scored on two of his first three plays. So impressive. The fans went absolutely fucking nuts. Sure, UTSA is no Michigan, but wow. This kid has a great future ahead of him.

Arch Manning stats vs. UTSA

Completions: 9-of-12
Passing yards: 223
Passing TDs: 4
Yards per attempt: 18.6
Interceptions: 0
Carries: 3
Rushing yards: 53
Rushing TDs: 1
Yards per carry: 17.7

Texas impressed the AP voters enough to nudge past Georgia and is ranked #1 in this week's poll. Georgia is now ranked #2.

As I watched Georgia-Kentucky I wondered if Georgia would slip out of the top spot for not winning big enough. Winning isn't enough for the voters. How much you win by is always considered.

Amazing that 6 of the top 7 ranked teams are in the SEC, all undefeated. Any questions, Big 10?

It’s that wonderful time of the year when Texas is still undefeated.

Pretty good chance that will continue this week. Texas is favored by 44.5 points over Louisiana-Monroe Saturday. Over/under is 52.5 points.

Penn State is 49 point favorite to beat Kent State.

I understand that Louisiana-Monroe and Kent State get a big payday for the game, but what do Texas and Penn State gain? It sure isn't brownie points for strength of schedule.

ALL of the big name schools play small schools to fine tune their teams. Sometimes you have a QB that looks great during summer sractice, but get him in a real game, and you might discover flaws.

Texas and Penn State don't always have great years (like when Jo Pa was forced out at Penn State). The two tiny schools might help UT or PSU to have a 6-6 record, which is a sight better than 4-8.

Texas gets a chance to tune in QB Arch Manning. He looked fabulous last week QB Quinn Ewers gets another week to heal a strained oblique.

Texas is rated #5 in the country for strength of schedule.

Two games to watch Friday night, both highly entertaining. The first was #22 Nebraska (3-0) and #24 Illinois (3-0). In overtime, Illinois scored a touchdown on two plays. Nebraska started 25 yards from the goal line and went the wrong way. A procedure penalty on first down was just the beginning. The Huskers ended up close to their own 41 at one point, almost sixty yards from the goal line. Illinois 31, Nebraska 24.

The second game didn't end until 2:30am eastern time. San Jose State (3-0) played at Washington State (3-0). SJSU led by 14 starting the fourth quarter but WSU scored three touchdowns and held a six point lead at the two-minute mark. SJSU scored a touchdown and two-point conversion to lead by three with about thirty seconds left. WSU kicked a tying field goal as regulation time expired.

In the first overtime San Jose won the toss and threw an interception. All Washington State needed was a field goal to win. Instead, the Cougars also threw an interception and forced a second OT. WSU scored a touchdown and converted a mandatory 2-point conversion. SJSU scored a touchdown, but failed on the point after try. Final score WSU 54, SJSU 52. I don't know what the over/under was, but I'd guess it was less than 106.

It has been a while since the Fighting Illini started 4 - 0.

I watched the Illini, because I have hated Nebraska since the Tom Osbourne era.

I really regret not staying up for the WSU - SJSU game. Total slugfest. Everyone I know who watched it said it was the most mentally exhausting game they had ever witnessed.

The Cougars moved to 4-0 because they turned away the Spartans’ two-point try in double overtime, which came moments after quarterback John Mateer careened into the end zone for the game-winning two-point conversion, which came moments after he threw an interception, which came moments after SJSU QB Emmett Brown threw his own pick, which came moments after WSU kicker Dean Janikowski hit a game-tying field goal, which came moments after SJSU took the lead with a touchdown pass with 26 seconds left.

There really is no killing Pac-12 After Dark.
