While you're waiting in vain for that apology, why don't you make yourself useful by getting on your knees and opening your mouth

Interesting article. I am surprised it too this long for somebody to suggest this.

On the one hand, I've seen this topic discussed several times, and over the course of at least the past two Olympics.

That, plus the fact that the comparison with Prohibition collapses very quickly on even a cursory examination.

On the other hand, IB is correct, it would be yet another example of to the richest go the spoils.

Everyone can access the good drugs. It's the ones with the best resources who can find the best drugs to mask the presence of PED's or influence the committees to not test at inopportune times.

On a slightly-related topic, now that the Olympics are actually on, UK TV is full of coverage of almost every event - it is on non-stop on at least one BBC channel at any time, with repeats and catch-up during the day to fill in the time-zone differences.

I'm not a big sportsman, but I enjoy it, watching the top athletes in sports that often don't get air-time (rugby sevens is awesome).

However, during the last Olympics, I was working in San Francisco.  We hd a TV in our apartment, but there was hardly any Olympic coverage, even in the news headlines.

Why not?

"Team USA" gets loads of medals (Phelps!) - does the wider population not enjoy it, or is all the coverage restricted to pay-per-view channels?

That's weird, since the Olympics are on at least four NBC/Universal channels here, one broadcast, and three basic cable.

The time-zone difference is only an hour or two over here, so many events are broadcast live (e.g. women's soccer).

My main complaint, as in previous years, is that in most of the things you watch, you'd think the U.S. athletes are the only ones present in Rio. I'm exaggerating, but only slightly, and while it makes sense that a U.S. broadcaster would want to appeal to a U.S. audience, I'd like to see at least some of the other athletes/competitions.

As I type, the Rugby 7 final is about to start - GB vs Fiji.

The match will only be 20 minutes long (7 min each way, plus delays).

Go, watch it!

And Fiji wins its first ever medal and it's GOLD. Congrats to the first timers.

That is all.

Last Wednesday my cousin asked me to go to his doctor with him, and the television set was set to NBC. I couldn't believe what lame sports they consider Olympic. I think the Greeks who created the Olympics would roll over in their graves... :P lol

I think the folks who resurrected the Olympics would be rolling over in their graves. Trampoline, golf, synchronized swimming and synchronized diving. REALLY.

That is all.

Gymnastics and Swimming I have no issue with. But too many things do not belong in the Olympics.

I agree - ish

My personal opinion is anything that requires judges to provide a score needs to go. Timed events or team events where they compete against each other belong.

Judged events (gymnastics, diving, synchronized anything, trampoline, figure skating, etc) gotta go. Don't get me wrong. These are all athletic undertakings and I applaud their efforts. However, when results are determined by judges who are not infallible, I see problems. What I think is a great, winning performance is not necessarily what somebody else would say is.

That is all.

I'm partial to Gymnastics, to me is the perfect event for the Olympics. I have the movie American Anthem and real gymnastic Mitch Gaylord is in there and he's awesome. He was the first gymnast in his time to score a perfect 10 doing a tough maneuver.
