https://gma.yahoo.com/extreme-skydiver-luke-aikins-prepares-jump-25-000-122121961--abc-news-entertainment.html

I really don't get these extreme stunts. I understand the allure for skydiving, bungee jumping, and the like. However, the high risk involved in something like this baffles me. I'm not just talking about the chance of him going splat on national television.  He is forcing his wife to risk raising their son as a single parent and his son to grow up without a dad. I don't see the exhilaration of success bring worth the those risks. If he is successful, money asside, he gets all of the rewards. If he fails his family is stuck with all of the loss. Imagine if you could play the stock market with that arrangement. Several of the wing suit guys have plastered themselves across a mountain side. This guy will end up the same. Maybe not from this stunt but someday one of these things will go wrong and he'll be a human pancake on national tv.

As far as I am aware there haven't been any failures of the wing suits themselves. The crashes have been due to the misjudging of distances. The wing suit guys are going very fast. They're skimming the side of the mountain trying to get as close as they can. By the time they realize that they have made an error in judgement there isn't enough time to correct their course due to speed.

The article says he's just wearing clothes and no chute. Basically, he's jumping out of a plane and aiming for a net. I'm not saying that when you have kids you have to give up your entire life. However, I do think your priorities have to change and perhaps there are some things that you do have to say goodbye to. Once you make the decision to become a parent your first priority has to be your kids. I believe taking hugely unnecessary risks, like this one, is counter to your responsibilities as a parent. If he wants to keep skydiving, fine. Put a damn chute on.

I really don't get these extreme stunts.

It is an adrenalin rush.  Some people thrive on it.  Not for me, thank you.

It's not going to happen at all........
First Off The FAA won't allow it.
Second "No" Pilot will risk his license for this kind of thing.
Third by rules and regulations "Every Person" (including the pilot) in a Jump Plane Must be wearing a parachute, so theoretically the guy has to be in a parachute before even stepping into the plane. I'm not so sure about the regulation on the wing suits.
But I do know that if anything goes wrong both the pilot and the jumpmaster can be held responsible not to mention the skydiving club also.

Love,
Liz

It's supposedly airing on Fox tonight. Starting at 8 est. I have to believe that Fox has all the bases covered in terms of legals. It says that it will be on a 5 second delay. Now, this may turn into a debacle like the guy who was going to be eaten by a snake a couple years ago.

Starting at 25K he'll be on oxygen.  He'll also have plenty of time to dump the required chutes and freeball it.

The early wingsuits had some deaths 'cos they were trying to use metal stiffeners in the wings, which folded and 'tied' the diver's hands behind his back.  There were 3 or 4 deaths that I remember being reported Way Back When, and the wingsuits were forbidden for quite a while.  Yeah, racing across the ground at 150+ MPH may be a rush, but that's one that I can do without.  I'll go play mumblety-peg instead.

According to Wikipedia there's been around 20 in the last decade alone.

I won't be able to watch it, but please keep us updated.
I would like to know how this turns out.
Especially since he will be in FAA controlled airspace (anything above 5,000 feet).
If he pulls it off.....good luck and congrats.

Love,
Liz

This guy won't even be wearing a wingsuit.  I think he has a double deathwish.

At the last minute SAG said they wouldn't film unless he is wearing a parachute. So, he is going to wear one after all.

They just had this guy, DJ Khaled (I'm not hip so I don't know who he is), comparing the risks he takes with his music to the risk this guy is taking. Someone should tell him that music doesn't kill you.

Edit: Throughout the show the people responsible for the stunt have been putting a heavy emphasis on their displeasure for the parachute requirement. They just announced that the requirement for the parachute has been lifted and he is taking it off.

Well, he did it. He landed slightly off center in the net and it arrested his fall. They lowered the net and he stood up with no immediately apparent injuries. When I saw him jump out of that plane with no chute I couldn't believe it. I believe I said something to the effect of, "Holy SHIT, that's crazy!!" I don't know how that guy walks with balls that big.

WAAAYYYY off-center.  Looked like he hit about 20 feet from the edge of the net.

~10 feet closer to the edge, and he might've have fallen OUT of the net.

Yep, massively stupid.  I'll stick with Russian Roulette, thanks.

Try Polish Roulette, it's a sure thing. One bullet in the magazine, insert the magazine into the semi-automatic pistol, and …
