When i click on chat it shows an empty box eve if someone is in chat is there something  wrong or can u not use chat on an iPhone ?

The chat room on KB is Flash based. Flash does not work in Apple products.

Yes it will appear at the top of the forum, but unfortunately the chat room is down at present but by the time you reach 50 posts it could well be operational again.

I'm not altogether sure it's a good idea to turn it back on again.  I saw that the forum had gone off-line around 11PM CST on the 16th, and backtracking the data looks like the stripped-down CHAT that I'd installed at RavishU may well be the culprit.  There were around 8 to 10 people in chat at the time that the server load went ballistic.  I only caught the tail end of it in the graphic below:



I've looked at the raw access logs 6 ways to Sunday, and the CHAT is the only thing I can see during the time that the server load was high.  Everything else (a couple of hundred GUESTS on each forum plus a few members) doesn't come close to explaining it, due to the other measures currently in place (both Google and MSN bots banned).  I'll probably relax the ban on Google this next week if I can get a handle on what's causing the load spikes, but right now it's looking like CHAT over at RavishU.

If the CHAT is causing the load spikes, then simply installing a stand-alone version that doesn't interface with the main forum database might correct it.  The frequent pops on our utterly HUGE forum databases may well be causing the bulk of the problems here.  Both Kristen's and RavishU forum databases are in the realm of 200-300meg, which is probably straining the SQL server.

The only way I'll know for sure if it's CHAT is to be on-line and watching the server load when a spike happens.  I can turn off the CHAT and see if the load plummets.  If it does, then I need to think seriously about installing it stand-alone or losing it entirely.

I'd be in favor of seeing it disappear.  This is a message board.   It's not like chat is the only way to communicate around here.

Furthermore, if the board's database is that bloated and causing that many problems, perhaps we should delete some unnecessary threads?   Last week we had a nitwit gravedig a 5 year old thread just to troll.

Hell must be frozen over. I agree with Athos. Partly. If there were no chat room, there would be no one posting nonsense to get to the required number of posts. If it overloads the forum, it's not worth the risk.
I don't agree with calling a member a nitwit because they found a thread they were interested in resurrecting...It means they were searching and reading on Kristen Board.

The Chat room always seems underused anyway but if this is the cause of the problem then pull the plug on it. We have threads and pm's where contact can be made and doubtless those who want to extend there 'chat' have messenger etc...

Good luck Rope with identifying the cause... We leave the final decision in your capable hands...

Like Athos maybe a cull of older unused threads will help the situation...

Well, that pretty well nails it.  Here's what's happened over the last few hours:


Perhaps I can modify it so that the chat doesn't overload the server; it's offline if not.  I'll take another snapshot in a few hours to prove that it's the cause, as the spikes have been happening late in the evening recently.  If the load stays low, then it's off until further notice.

We haven't had ANY spikes since it went off-line here and at RavishU.

Do the math.  Either the chats stay off-line, or we live with the SERVER going off-line due to usage spikes.  I know which one MOST of the members here want.   :roll:  The CPU load due to the three (total) chat servers (one here, two at RavishU) were worse than 800 to 1000 people PLUS BOTS surfing the forums.  The only thing that came close was when the stinkin' MSNbot went ballistic a number of times, DOSing the forum.  It's been permanently banned at the server level, and I don't plan to lift the ban on the MSNbot.

I've been watching the load daily for the last two weeks, and it appears that the bulk of the shutdowns in the last 2 months was undoubtedly due to the kiddies over at RavishU.  Truthfully, the couple of people that were occasionally in it HERE weren't the issue, but the regular free-for-all that kept going on at RavishU was why the host kept shutting us off.

Rope, the three or four members that use the chat will disagree with you. Using the board as a tool to communicate is just insane, we need our chat room off the main board so we can all function at a normal level. Also then we can bitch about how the board is so dead all the time

That's not a bad idea Eric, we did have an off site chat once upon a time. Maybe you could do a bit or research and find another alternative.
