Today is a new federal holiday called Juneteenth. It commemorates the day, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, when federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas and informed the slaves that they had been “free” for two years. So last night, our millennial office manager sent out a memo to all employees that we were taking “half a day” off. Which to me just seems like the biggest fucking slap in the face. Either honor the holiday, and give everybody the day off, or ignore the holiday and pretend you are Arizona (or Florida). But giving people half a day off just says “black people are only worth four hours.” End of rant.

That's a fine rant.

It's especially galling because you are in Texas, the event being commemorated took place in Texas, and it has been celebrated as a holiday in Texas for well over a century.

Still, it's good to keep in mind that federal holidays only apply to the federal government and federal employees. All other employers -- including states, municipalities, schools,and -- most notably -- private employers are under no obligation to mark the holiday nor are they required to grant employees the day off.

But, as you note, obligation is one thing, and appropriateness is decidedly another.

I can honestly see a lot of companies refusing to give the day off especially with the 4th of July right around the corner.

2 square miles of our city lost power.  Our house being part of it.  I told Dan via text.  He suggested I put the outside fridge on generator.  Ugh.  I pull it out, gas it up, finally get it started (pulling my arm socket out in the process), 10 minutes later the power comes on. 
I plug the fridge back in the wall, roll up the extension cord, and just as I was about to put the generator away, I think, I should get the gas out of the tank on the generator. Thanks to neat freak Dan, the storage box in the garage that has the siphon house is easily found.  I put the 75 pound generator on the table with gas can on the floor and suck on the hose and....... get a mouthful of gas.   

Oh my god, the worst taste ever.

They have siphons with pumps on them.so you dont need to suck on the hose... might be worth looking into. Hope you've got some breath mints.

I hope you drank some good bourbon to rid the gasoline taste from your mouth.  ;D ;D  Most times, the carburetors on small generators have a drain plug.

Had some fradulant charges on our credit card that the bank caught. Have to wait nearly a week for now cards to arrive.
Feel naked not able to charge. :facepalm:

Wife called our insurance company. They take an automatic payment from the credit card twice a year. We didn't want the insurance people to cancel us when the payment didn't go through. Got A two week extension. Wife committed that we've been with the company over 30 years. Guy commented he hasn't even been alive that long. Both of us got a good laugh out of that. :D

Call from the estranged one.  She was at ER again yesterday. Transported to the medical center in town. Renal failure. She was on dialysis for six hours yesterday. Six more hours planned for today. She’s only 43. Destroyed her kidneys with pain medication. She’s uninsured, under employed, and depends on me for everything. No family or friends. Doesn’t have a driver’s license. I don’t think she is sufficiently vested to get SSD payments. No idea what this means for her, or for me. Dark days ahead.

Her creatinine level is 8.0. Normal is about 1.0. So she has eight times the toxins in her kidneys as normal. And she kept talking about pain medicine. I’m trying to ask her about her medical condition and she just keeps saying “they won’t give me pain meds.” I knew this day would come, but I didn’t think it would come so soon.

Yes. And alcohol addiction. And steroidal addiction. And NSAID addiction. That’s what killed her kidneys.

She does have a serious lumbar injury. But she refuses to get an MRI to figure out what the heck is going on. Instead, she just keeps pumping drugs down herself. She’s got some circulatory issues. Her mother suffered from thrombosis. Her feet are so swollen some days, she can’t even get the shoes on. She has morphed from being a very slender, very attractive, vivacious young Russian educator to a bent over prematurely aged babushka. She can’t ambulate without a cane. And I’d say she spends every moment she isn’t it work, just laying in her own excrement, moaning.

She’s in the hospital right now. The trouble with being uninsured is they will just stabilize and release her, until the next time she shows up.

Yup, she's 43, but I don't think Medicare kicks in until 65. Maybe Medicaid though?
