Having a new water pump installed on my car. Finding out that the engineers of {nameless car company} in their infinite wisdom designed things so half the engine had to be taken apart to replace the damn thing.

So, $860 later I have a brand new $50 water pump, along with a new timing belt and a dozen or so new gaskets and seals (at about $20 a pop). The good news is that they said it would take a week, and I got it back after 3 days.

When I was in high school I replaced a water pump on my straight-8 Buick using 1 wrench and it took less than an hour.

PS: Power was out, right at dinner time. Since we didn't know it would only be 45 minutes we had Subway for dinner. I love Subway and my wife even treated. Now THAT is something that doesn't happen very often so the day wasn't a total bust.  ;D

How many is too many?

Subway is one of my favorite eat to go places.   I had it yesterday in fact.  Fresh Fit 6 in, Turkey, Pepperjack, light lettuce along with my favorite fixings, no dressing, but quacamole to make it not seem so dry.

I used to work with daddy on cars.  He used to tinker with cars from before I was born.  When something happened with his 1989 Eldorado (I think), it went to the shop.  I asked why we didn't fix it.   He said it was impossible to work on most new cars and that's why he still loved the older ones.
And then I married a car guy.   Where daddy specialized under the hood, Dan is all about making it look spectacular.  I think my car looks better today than the day it rolled off the dealers lot.

I mentioned CG's comment to Dan last night.  He said, "Maybe you're sick because you're not giving me enough."

mmm-hmmm

By the way, still feeling yucky.   Popping Tylenol Cold & Flu pills every 4-6 hours.   They usually make me feel much better.    I've slept 12 hours in the last 15 hours.
Time to get some work done around the house though.

hahaha
It is the first time I've had it in a month though.
I rarely eat fast food.   We only eat out dinner once a week.
95 % of my lunches consist of a 3 oz portion of salmon, chicken, turkey or sirloin for lunch with veggies and a salad.

Find a decent Italian deli.  You'll never get chain sub sandwiches again.

Be careful with that... their 'recommended dosage' is uncomfortably close to the adult toxic limit for acetaminophen.  They say max 10 capsules per 24 hours: 3,250 mg acetaminophen.  At 4,000mg per 24 you can start to get liver damage.  There are other combo drugs that contain phenylephrine and guaifenesin without the Tylenol... you might ask your pharmacist for other suggestions.  I don't buy anything with acetaminophen except for hydrocodone 'cos acetaminophen doesn't do anything but reduce fever, and you can't get hydrocodone without acetaminophen.  Codeine derivatives have a really wide therapeutic range, but Tylenol doesn't.

I stopped taking Tylenol years ago for that reason.  I will take ibuprofen for pain related to inflammation.  Aspirin for fever, but I haven’t had a fever in ages.

Lots of protein!  I like to "Spit," because once you swallow it, it's gone.  I like facials, and body shots, because then I get to play with it!  However, a little goes a long way, because the aftertaste is unmistakeable (One of the challenges as a writer is the 5 senses description.  Especially describing tastes, and smells that can't be compared with anything.  That's why we have horrible descriptions like "Fishy.") and lingers in your mouth a long time.

It's also my favorite lube.

I never knew that, thanks for sharing that info.

I had to have surgery back in February. They gave me a big-ass shot of morphine when I was in the ER, and it worked very quickly, and I felt amazing, almost euphoric. When they rolled me into the OR, I was like, "Bring it on!"

When I was recovering, they gave me one of those morphine pump things where you push the button when you need it. I did it once, just to see what it felt like, but my "pain" never got beyond the discomfort stage, and I wanted to avoid it. So they gave me some pills which the nurse said was "Tylenol with Codeine."

If Tylenol is as dangerous as you outline, why would a hospital administer it?

There's a warning on the bottle.

It can cause liver damage.

Right, but frequent large doses don't just increase the odds, but also how much damage your organs (Incuding the Liver) can take.  Chronic use can cause Chronic deterioration, failure, and Death.

It also says "May cause Cancer" on some cigarette packs, but we're not talking about "Take 2 asprin, and call me in the morning."  We have to be careful about chronic high doses of NSAIDs.

Popping Tylenol Cold & Flu pills every 4-6 hours.

Correction....
Alka Selzer Cold & Flu.

These are the best.
I swear by them.    They help mask the symptoms so much.   The just knock my rear end on the couch for some sleep though.

Hospitals won't give you a dangerous dose, but I'm fucked if I know why they use it at all.  Many people get little-to-no pain relief from Tylenol; I'm one of 'em.  It reduces a fever just fine, but that's all it does for me.  I've asked nurses before and gotten non-answers, so there's something they're not saying, like "it works by placebo effect, mostly".

I can't get the whole article from MedScape, but here's a quote:
"Acetaminophen toxicity is primary cause of drug overdose related–liver failure in the United States."

Again, that's at higher levels than a hospital would ever prescribe, over 4,000mg per day.

Here's an article from Harvard Medical School - in plain English, not medical-ese:

Pretty much the same, as it still has 325mg Tylenol.  Don't take more than 10 pills per day.  You might think about adding 600 to 800mg of guaifenesin to make the mucus more fluid, if that's a problem.  You can get it in that dosage (generic, OTC) from most pharmacies.  When my sinuses are packed up, I take 1200mg horse-pill caplets of guaifenesin from Walgreens (Mucus Relief ER).

Which is exacerbated by any alcohol consumption.  I avoid Tylenol.  The rare times I need something for my head, the last time coincidentally this morning, I use Advil.

Marketing, Lobbying, and Insurance.  Damned if I know why Children's Tylenol is still on the Market.

Kids get fevers (and higher fevers) more often than adults do, so there's a reasonable use for it.  You don't need a high dose to reduce a fever, so their livers aren't at risk.  However, I'd recommend NOT giving them Tylenol unless the doctor recommends it.  Sometimes a fever is a GOOD thing.

I had a lung infection picked up on a flight back from Fiji ~10 years ago.  It PUT ME DOWN for a solid month.  During the course I was coughing so hard and frequently that the doc prescribed morphine cough syrup.  It helped a little, but I still tore muscle tissue in the chest and abdomen from the extended coughing.  After about a month I was scheduled for a weekly check-in with the doctor and felt fine, no major congestion.  I told the doc that the bug must be gone 'cos I felt great.  He said it wasn't over yet, and that I was running a 108F / 42C fever, and to monitor it frequently to make sure it didn't go much higher.  I asked about Tylenol and he said it was better to let the fever run, as it'd help kill the bug.  3 days later the fever broke, and I was clear.

Bedtime conversation with the 7.

She wants to make videos, in case something bad ever happens to her or if she ever gets really sick. Basically... if she dies. She said she wants to leave something behind for the family.

I tried to tell her not to think about that stuff, that she's got a long, long... LONG way to go and that I will be gone long before her. But she said "You never know, mommy".

Like I want my children thinking about death when they should be thinking about annoying the shit out of me for the next few months.
