Given we’re talking about snow in Europe and ruined days, it reminded me of something sad that happened when I was in my wife’s home town of Katowice Poland over a decade ago.

It was icy from past snow and fresh snow was falling.  I was walking the icy streets and noticed a young girl walking partly because, well she was a young girl, and partly because I couldn’t believe she had heels on.  Sure enough and terribly unfortunate, she fell very hard right before my eyes.

I ran over and bent down to the still girl touching and and speaking to her.  She seemed to be out, but then abruptly came to and began crying and was speaking Polish.  I kept talking to her and she switched to broken English.  Two women came over and one called emergency services with her cell.

The girl’s hands and arms were moving, but her legs bent in awkward positions were not.  We all knew enough not to try and move her, especially since if she could move her legs herself she probably would have.  She also was pointing at her face and speaking; her face was on the curb, and I think her jaw was broken.

She kept lifting her face off the icy curb, and I knew it must hurt, and she was obviously getting cold.  I was still afraid to move her, but then one of the times she lifted her head, I took my fake leather and fake fur hat off and pushed it under her face.  She just rested on it then as we waited.  A crowd gathered but it was the two women and myself that were talking to her.  It was snowing hard, so I had my head and body over her shielding her from the snow fall.  I held her hand the entire time as we waited.

Eventually an ambulance came and I helped as we got her on a stretcher moving her as little as possible.  Just before they took her, she grasped my hat and pushed it in my direction returning it.  It was very touching she wanted to give it back, thinking of me at that time, as I would have gladly let her keep it.

I think of her once in a while wondering how much she recovered.  It was awful seeing her legs bent the way they were.  I still have the hat; it still has a few tiny flecks staining it of her blood. I never even saw her face, nor she mine.

That's so sweet  :emot-heartbeat:

I partially wonder why she was wearing heels
Partially, since I know what Poland was known for a decade-and-then-some ago.
Now it"s changed to Ukraine and Belarus

Don't ask me.
I'm just as clueless about life as you are.

It’s Europe, borders shifted throughout history, possibly none more so than Poland.  During the partitions, Prussia, Austria and Russia took territory on three occasions until there was no Poland left.  Poland was restored after WWI.

Yeah heels in the ice and snow caught my attention just before she fell.   Maybe a work requirement, but put them on when you get there.  I just hope she recovered.

A very good friend has gone silent on me for 6 days now.  She and I typically exchange some text or something daily.  The only other times this has happened in the 5 years we’ve known each other either she or her husband was in the hospital with something serious.  I have her husband’s number and tried it.  It had been months since I used that number, and it’s now disconnected.  I’m beyond worried, have even begun checking obituaries.

Plumbing.  I *hate* plumbing.

Yesterday I noticed water around the base of my downstairs toilet.  OK, the building is 42 years old, and that's undoubtedly the original wax ring sealing the toilet to the sewer.  I had one of the neighbors help do the upstairs toilet last year just after I broke my wrist.  I shut the water off with the gate valve.  Oops.  That's also 42 years old, and now it's leaking furiously.  I managed to crank it down to 1 drop every second or two, put a large pan underneath and went to Home Depot to buy a wax ring, a replacement shut-off valve, and a replacement hose to connect from the new shut-off valve to the toilet tank.  Might as well get everything, even though the old hose looked OK.

I emptied the pan just before going to bed.  When I woke this morning, I had around a gallon or two of water on the bathroom floor where it'd overflowed the pan during the night.  I dry it all up, and start in on the destruction.  It took nearly an hour to cut the old bolts off as they were corroded.  Then I could remove the toilet.  Yep, looked like 40 year old wax to me!  I cleaned that shit up, and managed to pry the bits of the two bolts out of the flange on the floor.

I started in on the leaking gate valve, and got it unsoldered from the copper pipe sticking out of the wall.  The new replacement valve is a 1/4 turn ball-check valve that I've used before, so it ought to last for a decade or two.  Hmmm.  Can't get all of the silver solder off of the pipe, so I'll have to cut off about 1/2 inch to get to smooth copper that the compression fitting on the new valve will clear.  Of course, my copper tubing cutter decides to take a shit, and it took a good 30 minutes to cut the tube (should have been a minute).  I guess I need a new blade for my tubing cutter.  New valve is now in place, so I pressure-test and it's all OK.  I manage to tip the toilet over after soaking out all the water in tank and bowl, and clean off the bottom where the new ring goes.  Still all OK.  Getting the toilet guided over the two bolts was a FUCKING NIGHTMARE with 1 and 1/2 hands (can't put any force on my left hand) but I got it settled smoothly, and gently forced it down to get the wax to squish out and seal to the flange / bottom of the bowl.

Not counting the trip to Home Depot last night, I was done with a 30 minute job, 4 hours later.  Did I mention that I HATE FUCKING PLUMBING?  I have all of the right tools and some good practical experience over the years, but it's still a damned annoyance.

Remember the Golden Rule: you do me, and I\'ll do you (paraphrased)

Trying finding a leak in a water line that is underground (6 feet) and runs approximately 1/4 mile to a water tank for horses in a field.
(and you hate plumbing)...... ;D

Decided I've recovered enough from last months illness to start running again.   Mark and I planned on our normal 4 mile loop.  200 yards from home and I knew I wasn't going to make it.  Struggled for a mile and turned around and walked back home.   All respiratory, I couldn't catch my breath.
I thought I was recovered enough.

Still no word.  If it weren’t for this I’d actually be happy given current other circumstances, but instead I feel like I’ve been gut punched over and over.

Feel a sinus headache coming on.   Almost feels like a premigraine I get about twice a year.   grrrr

Signing off and going for a walk to hopefully get some blood flowing and clear it.

Everybody have a wonderful weekend.   Might be on tonight, but if not, I'll be around Sunday evening.

If you're still reading this, try eating a salty snack as well - a packet of "chips", a handful of roast & salted peanuts.

In these days of "low salt" diets, it turns out some people have too little salt, and that can cause an imbalance in electrolytes that, in turn, causes a headache.

A biochemist friend tried an experiment on other friends with headaches - she drew a line of salt along the back of their hands and made them lick the salt up. Most were so short of salt they couldn't taste the salt on their hands until the line was nearly gone (along with their headaches).

I was actually feeling a little hungry when I got in the car, so I got in my trunk where I keep emergency supplies.   I had some trail mix packets.   I ate one along with water.   I don't know when, but my headache is gone right now.  Maybe the salt took care of it.   Interesting.   Will check this out next time I get a headache.

Cable service went down. Internet and video has been out since yesterday. Waiting for the service rep to come out, sometime today.

Sad that we have become so connected that one little hiccup could leave us figuratively in the dark. Least now the smartphones can keep us connected.

The bomber this time used a trip wire. More school shootings and our politicians do nothing.  That is a sad day. :(

I live about 90 miles from Austin and 40 miles from Schertz.  Too close for comfort.
