Received word that someone that I consider a friend will be moving.
The news saddened me.
I only had one way to contact her, but it has been disconnected.   So now I have no way of getting in contact with her.
I hope to hear from her before her departure.

Like Julie, we are losing a close friend today.  Ruby, the sweet Basset Hound of our neighbors will be moving to the other side of the metro area (about 20 miles).

Wife started taking care of her and another Basset when they were only a few months old, letting them out when owners were at work.  Now Ruby is 11 years old, so she's been part of our lives for over ten years.

Wife took them to the dog park after the back yard romps weren't enough.  When she ended up breaking both ankles one icy winter day, I took over the dog park trips.  Today will be our last visit there.  Many of the other regulars at the park will also be missing her, even if she gets a little snippy at strange dogs approaching too quickly.

I know we'll still see her once in awhile, but it's still a loss after being in Ruby's life for all these years, including dealing with her diabetes discovered while her owners were on vacation.  Besides the dog park visits, we get called on to feed her and give her insulin shot when "Mom and Dad" go out early on weekends and wife stays with her when they're on vacation .

In addition wife started making outfits for various holidays and dressing them up.  I take the pictures and at the end of the year we make a calendar with all that year's costumes.  We still have 5 more pictures to complete the 2018 calendar, so there will be those opportunities.  Here's Ruby celebrating the 4th.

Hugs.  I'm dealing with a rash of bad medical news.  So I understand the feelings this unleashes.  We're all living on borrowed time.  Enjoy today.  It is "the present."

Migraine, which I rarely get.     Going on 14 hours.    Almost no sleep.   Not a good day.

Only stopped in for a moment as I'm awaiting a PM from someone.

Good luck Jules... migraines are so damned painful unless you just get the aura ones. When I do the auras usually clear in about thirty minutes unless I get the bad head to go with it then it can be days.

Sympathies to you Jules. Get well soon. Thinking of you...

Either there is something screwy with the electrical of my house or my electrician skills are not as good as I thought. I hope it's the latter.

I decided the plugs in the kitchen needed replacing for cosmetic reasons. Swapped in new ones and now the damn breaker keeps popping.

Real electrician coming by tomorrow morning to rescue me.

That is all.

Having had some electrical experience back in High School, let me ask, did you make sure you put each wire in the exact same spot they were on the old outlet? There's a reason why there are white, black and various other color-insulated wires... ;-)

Yeah , reverse the ground, neutral, and hot wires for a fun experience!

For a kitchen you need GFI, right.     Each receptacle does not have to be.  Only the first one does and then everyone after that does (I think it is referred to as "in series").   Either you have a bad GFI,or one of the receptacles that follow is either wired wrong or a bad receptacle.
Same thing happened with the remodel of my bathroom.

I thought I did. Obviously I didn't but I think I'm smart enough to know when to let a professional do it.

I also have a  problem with a 4 way light switch set up (3 switches to control 1 light). Again, I thought I wired the new switches exactly the same as the old ones but ...

Jules, we want GFIs in the kitchen BUT, they were not required when the home was built. And to install them would require a completely new breaker panel. Overall, the exercise would be VERY expensive. We know this because my wife works for an electrical company and sees the billing for their clients.

As for your comment, Katie --- been there - done that.

That is all.

Remember I'm posting from the UK...

A popping breaker is a short or an overload somewhere - either across the live/neutral, or to Earth ("ground" to colonials), or the thing you are plugging in has developed a fault and the fuse in the plug is too big.

I think the short is probably the most likely, and the first thing I would look for is stray strands of the multi-core wire. They can be almost invisible in the shadowy guts of a wall socket, but still enough to provide a route for current to flow the wrong way. Next time the breaker trips, leave it tripped and open each socket in turn, sniffing for that "electrical burning" smell, and looking for signs of soot or charring, then fixing the stray wire.

Both problems are now solved.

1. the counter plugs --- wired correctly BUT I had forgotten about clipping the tabs on the right side of the plugs. Therefore, they were in a permanent short. Clipped the tabs and the problem went away.

2. the 4 way/3 way switch problem was one of incorrect wiring. I wired the new 4 way switch the exact same way as the original (the wires on the right side were wired to the right side of the new switch -- left side to left side). HOWEVER, the new switch was not wired the same way internally.

That is all.

Changing out the light switches from standard to Decora. Simple enough. Turn power off, take out old switch, put new switch in making sure it is wired exactly the same as the original. Turn power back on and test.

Then one of the lights doesn't light up when the switch is turned on. WTF? How can I mess it up. It's 2 fuckin' wires. 2.

I'm about to call a professional when my wife decides to tell me that the bulb burnt out a couple of days ago.  ARRRGGHHH!!!!!

That is all.

That is hilarious.    Well, it is after the fact.      Can you imagine the electrician coming in and changing the light bulb.

It's sort of like the troubleshooing guide in the back of a coffee maker I once bought.
"Make sure plug is connected to a power source."
