NPR had an interesting report regarding Puerto Rico. It seems all of the supplies stashed there were sent to the US Virgin Islands when a hurricane hit them first, then when Maria struck, there were no supplies ready for the emergency in Puerto Rico. There were other problems as well, like the 1 million gallons of drinking water delivered to the airport that never got distributed. All this water is still at the airport.
There are also reports of FEMA funds being raided by Homeland Security to fund ICE and build new detention centers for undocumented immigrants. This was all unecessary of course, as detanees could have been given ankle monitors that are 95-98% effective to ensure that people show up for their hearings, plus saving costs on housing, food, medicine and education.
FEMA needs to be funded to help during a disaster.
